Description
1952 G. Y. M. GOPERT 2,
FOLDING BED Filed Oct. 25, 1950 Patented Dec. 16, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FQLDING BED Giite Y, M. Giipert, Jonkoping, Sweden Application October 25,, 1950, Serial No. 192,022 In Sweden June 26, 1950 4 Claims.
This invention relates to a folding bed, suchas a sofa or a chair, having a main frame comprising two end portions and a back portion connected thereto and a bed frame comprising a number of sections hingedly connected to each other. A folding bed of this type is described in my simultaneously filed patent application Serial No. 192,023.
An object of the invention is to provide a folding bed of the type set forth in which an end section of the bed frame is supported in a simple and rigid manner when the bed frame is unfolded. Another object of the invention is to arrange the end portion of the main frame and the end section of the bed frame in such a manner that a locking device of a simple construction may be used which is easy to operate and forms no obstacle when released.
These and other obj ects and advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereafter, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatical end elevation of a portion of the folding bed according to one form of the invention showing the supports for the end section of the bed frame inclusively the locking device.
Figure 2 is a corresponding elevation view of the locking device turned 90 and lowered together with the end section to an undermost position.
Figure 3 is a top view of the device shown in Figure 2.
The main frame of the piece of furniture comprises two end portions made of a metal tube and having a substantially vertical frame member I and a substantially horizontal frame member 2 welded to the member I. The back portion of the main frame is parallel to and is covered by frame member I in Figure 1. The bed frame comprises a rear end section 3, which is hingedly connected at 4 with the next section 5, which may be pivoted in said end portion and be hingedly connected with one or more further sections of the bed frame. These sections are preferably made of metal tubes, and they may be provided with a resilient bed bottom of any suitable type not shown in the drawing. The end section 3 is composed of two longitudinal frame portions and an end frame member 6 adapted to slide on two guide members I, when the section 3 during the unfolding operation is raised from a bottom position corresponding to Figure 2 to its upper position shown in Figure 1. In this position the end of the section 3 is supported by the guide members I carried by the back portion.
The longitudinal frame membersof section 3 are provided with a locking device in the form of an angle arm of a square cross section. The
lower end thereof consists of a pivot H! passing through the metal tube of the section 3. It rests with a shoulder 9 thereon and is below the frame member provided with a locking nut H. The pivot is mounted in a substantially vertical position, and the upper portion of the arm is bent at a right angle. A plate spring I2 is fastened to the upper end of the angle arm 8 and forms a lateral extension thereof.
When the bed frame is unfolded and the section 3 is in the position shown in Figure 1, the horizontal portion .of the locking arm 8 is to be turned outwardly to rest upon the frame member 2. The inner end of section 3 is thus carried rigidly by the frame portion 2 and is thus of no obstacle.
When folding the bed frame together the looking arm i9 is to be turned whereby the end section 3 is released, and the spring [2, which serves as a handle for the locking arm, now extends over the bed It provided on the bed frame and exerts a pressure thereon so as to keep the bed in position during the folding operation.
The form of execution shown in the drawing is only an example of the performance of the invention. and modifications are therefore possible within the scope of the invention.
Instead of the horizontal portion of the locking arm resting on the upper surface of the frame section 3 the locking arm may be provided with other locking means such as a tongue engaging a slot in the frame member 2.
I claim:
1. In a folding bed, a main frame comprising two end members and a back member connected thereto, a bed frame comprising a plurality of sections hingedly connected one to another, one of which sections forms an end section, a sloping guide member secured to said back member and adapted to raise the end frame portion of said end section, from a lower position within the folding bed to an upper position when the bed frame is unfolded, and a locking device pivoted in a longitudinal frame portion of said end section, said locking device resting when turned into one position against one of said end members for locking said end section of the bed frame when said frame is unfolded but which locking device releases said end section when the looking device is turned to another position.
2. In a folding bed, a main frame comprising two end members and a back member connected thereto, a bed frame comprising a plurality of sections hingedly connected one to another, one of which sections forms an end section, a sloping guide member secured to said back member and adapted to raise the end frame portion of said end section from a lower position within the folding bed to an upper position when the bed frame is unfolded, and a locking device havin a vertical pivot passing through a tubular longitudinal frame portion of said end section and an upper locking arm forming a substantially right angle to said pivot and adapted to rest in one position against one of said end portions for supporting said end section when the bed frame is unfolded but releasing said end section when the locking arm is turned to another position.
3. In a folding bed, a main frame comprising two end members and a back member connected thereto, a bed frame comprising a plurality of sections hingedly connected one to another, one of which forms an end section, a sloping guide 'member secured to said back member and adapted to raise the end frame portion of said end section from a lower position within the folding bed to an upper position when the bed frame is unfolded, and a locking device pivoted in a longitudinal frame portion of said end section and having an upper locking arm adapted to rest in one position against one of said end portions for supporting said end section when the bed frame is unfolded but releasing said end section when the locking arm is turned to another position, and said locking device having a laterally extending resilient extension adapted to rest against the bed when the locking arm is turned to a released position.
4. In a folding bed, a main frame comprising two end members and a back member connected thereto, a bed frame comprising a number of sections hingedly connected one to another, one of which forms an end section, a sloping guide member secured to said back member and adapted to raise the end frame portion of said end section from a lower position within the folding bed to an upper position when the bed frame is unfolded, and a locking device pivoted in a longitudinal frame portion of said end section and having an upper locking arm adapted to rest in one position against one of said end portions for supporting said end section when the bed frame is unfolded but releasing said end section when the locking arm is turned to another position, and said locking device having a laterally extending resilient extension adapted to rest against the bed when the locking arm is turned to a released position and to be located along the said end member when the locking arm is turned to a lockin position.
