Description

1952 H. B FECHTER 0,
TOOL FOR PERFORATING RADIATOR HANGERS Filed March 18, 1948 ZbZIeckZer INVENTOR BY I '11 ATTORNEYS.
Patented Dec. 9, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOOL FOR PERFORATING RADIATOR HANGERS 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a tool designed for use in forming the perforations and enlargements on radiator hangers so that a clamping means may be readily connected thereto for drawing the sides of the hanger into close engageinent with the radiator during the soldering operation. A primary object of the invention is to provide a cross handled tool having jaws so constructed and arranged that cutting bits may be secured thereto so that when the tool is operated, the cutting bits will be moved into engagement with the radiator hanger, perforating the hanger and at the same time forming enlargements on the hanger to accommodate the jaws of the clamp used in drawing the sides of the hanger together.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character including an auxiliary lever having a cam formed thereon, the cam operating to move one of the arms of the tool, to operate the jaws in a manner as described.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a tool constructed in accordance with the invention, the cam lever thereof being shown in dotted lines as in its inactive position.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view illustrating one end of the hanger which has been formed with perforations and an enlargement for the reception of the jaws of a radiator supporting clamp.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fi 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the tool comprises pivotally connected members providing a long handle 5 and a substantially short handle 6, there being provided jaws 'I and 8 formed on the opposite ends of the members.
The jaw I is formed with a cut out portion defining a straight wall 9 at the outer end thereof and an inclined wall II) in which the cutting bit II extends, the cutting bit I I passing into an opening formed in the jaw 'I and intersecting the cut out portion. A set screw indicated'at I2 I bears against the rear end of the bit I I and pro-' vides means for moving the bit II so that the cutting end thereof will extend beyond the inner face of the jaw 'I. A set screw I3 extends into a threaded bore formed in the outer edge of the jaw I and engages the bit II, securing the bit II in its positions of adjustment.
The jaw 8 is also formed with an opening in which the bit I4 is held, the bit being moved into cutting relation with the bit II by means of the set screw I5 that bears against the inner end of the bit. As shown, the cutting end of the bit I 4- is transversely curved to conform to the curvature of the inclined wall II) of the cut out portion. The bits II and I4 have cooperating cutting edges, which when moved past each other as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing, out an opening in the material one of the bits passing into the cut portion forcing the material against the inclined wall I0 bending the material providing a punched out portion constituting a hanger. A set screw indicated by the reference character- IB extends inwardly from the outer edge of the jaw and contacts with the bit I4, securing this bit in its positions of adjustment. As shown, the
bits II and I4 are so arranged that one bit,
moves in parallel relation with the adjacent bit the bit I4 being of the length to extend into the cut out portion of the jaw I so that when the jaws are brought together and the bits contact the metal hanger, an enlargement or punched out portion indicated at II will be provided on the hanger, the hanger in the present showing being 7 hanger has been provided.
3 pivot pin 20 on which the lever 2| is pivotally mounted.
The lever 2! is provided with an ofifset cam end 22 which is adapted to move into engagement with the outer surface of the short handle 6, moving the handle 6 towards the handle 5, when the lever 2! is moved from the dotted line position as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing to the full line position.
With this structure, it is obvious that excessive leverage may be directed to the short handle 8 to cause the bits to punch the metal of which the hanger I8 is constructed. forming the lug or' punched out portion l I.
When it is desired to form an enlargement or punched out portion I 1 on a hanger, it is only necessary to position the jaws of the tool over the hanger, with the bits disposed on opposite sides thereof.
With the jaws positioned in the proper place on the hanger, the lever 2| is swung rearwardly, the cam end thereof moving the short handle section 8 towards the handle 5, resulting in the bit punching the hanger, so that the clamp used in holding the hanger to a radiator, may be positioned and the hanger soldered to the radiator.
Disposed between the handles 5 and 8 is a coiled spring 23 which has its ends fitted over the lugs 24 formed on the handles holding the spring in place. This spring operates to norm-ally urge the handles 5 and 6 apart.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
In a metal punching tool, a pair of pivoted jaws at one end of the tool, cutting bits secured to the jaws adjustable towards and away from each other, one of said jaws having a cut out portion adjacent to its bit, the ball of the cut out portion beinginclined towards the inner end of the jaw and being transversely curved, the cutting edges of the bits cooperating in cutting an opening in a sheet metal, one of said bits being transversely curved and having a beveled end movable into the cut out portion forcing material into the cut out portion and bending the material adjacent to said cut out portion, providing a hanger as the jaws are moved into cooperative relation with each other.
