The present invention relates generally to surgical instruments and particularly to new and useful improvements in hemorrhoidal clamps and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts whereby rectal operations may be expeditiously and efiiciently performed with a minimum of pain and post-operative discomfort to the patient.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a clamp of the aforementioned character which may be readily assembled and disassembled to facilitate application and removal.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a clamp of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a hemorrhoidal clamp constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the device.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional View, taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a flat base of suitable metal which is designate generally by reference numeral 6. The base 6 is formed to provide a handle 7 having an opening 8 in the inner or rear end portion thereof.
Formed integrally with the other end of the handle I is an eye or ring 9 which is internally beveled as at I (see Figure 4). Thus, a clamping edge or seat II is provided in the ring 5.
Rockably mounted on the base 6 at an intermediate point is an angular metallic lever l2 comprising an upwardly and forwardly extending arm l3. Depending from the lever 12 at the angle thereof is a fulcrum M which is engageable in a recess or depression l provided therefor in the base 6 for retaining said lever against longi-- tudinal movement on said base.
The arm l3 of the lever I2 has formed in its forward or free end portion a slot I6 defining 2 bifurcations l l. The bifurcations I! have formed therein transversely aligned grooves la the purpose of which will be presently set forth.
The inner or rear end portion of the rockable lever I2 has formed therein a vertical opening IS. The opening l9 accommodates a threaded post 20 in the form of a countersunk screw which is mounted in the opening 8 in the handle I. A wing nut 2| is threaded on the post 20 and engaged with the lever l2 for actuating said lever toward operative position.
Removably mounted on the forward end portion of the lever I2 is a clamp 22. The clamp member 22 includes a spheroidal head 23 on one end of a stem or rod 24. The head 23 is engageable in the ring 9 and cooperable with the edge or seat ll of said ring. The slot I6 in the lever arm l3 accommodates the rod or stem 24. Mounted in the other end portion of the rod or stem 24 is a transverse pin 25 which is engageable in the grooves [8 for operatively and detachably connecting the clamp member 22 to the rockable lever [2.
It is thought that the manner in which the instrument is used will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing, particularly to those of the medical profession. Briefly, the head 23 is inserted in the rectum and brought down with the stem 24 protruding. The ring 9 is then applied and the pin 25 is engaged in the grooves l8 for connecting the clamp member or unit 22 to the lever I2. The wing nut 2| is then tightened to clamp the tissue between the head 23 and the seat I I of the ring 9 and the surgeon may then proceed with the operation. To remove the instrument the wing nut 2| is loosened sufficiently on the post 20 to allow disengagement of the head 23 from the seat H and permit disassembling the units 6, l2 and 22.
It is believed that the many advantages of a hemorrhoidal clamp constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A hemorrhoidal clamp comprising a base including a metallic handle and a ring integral with one end of said handle, said base further having a recess therein at an intermediate point, a removable angular lever rockably mounted on the base and including a depending fulcrum at the angle thereof engaged in the recess, said lever further including an upwardly and forwardly extending arm comprising bifurcations on its free end having transversely aligned grooves therein, the other end portion of the lever having an opening therein, a clamp member including a stem, a spheroidal head on one end of the stem engageable in and cooperable with the ring, the other end portion of the stem being engageable between the bifurcations of the arm, a pin on the stem engageable in the grooves for detachably connecting the clamp member for actuation thereby, a threaded post on the other end portion of the handle engaged in the opening, and a wing nut threaded on said post and engageable with the lever for actuating said lever in one direction.
