Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a vertical sectional view of my device, and Fig. 2 is a detail view.

This invention has relation to elevating subterranean dumb-waiters; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the ventilated safe, its suspending cord or chain, pulley, screw-grooved opera ting-roller, and the well or sub-cellar into which the safe descends, all as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the well or sub-cellar into which the safe is designed to be lowered in order to keep the articles therein at a cool and uniform temperature.

B B represent side guides, being vertical strips extending from the well or sub-cellar upward to the floor O of the house, and above said floor through an opening, 1), therein, which is of sufficient size to provide for the passage of the safe.

This closet or incasement E is provided with a door, G, which serves to protect the safe when raised and to guard the opening D when the safe has been lowered into the well or sub-cellar. A trap, S, is provided above the top of the safe S, which closes the opening D when the safe has been lowered into the well A. This trap S is carried up and down with the safe as the latter is raised and lowered.

The roller H 1s provided with a guiding spiral groove, 11, which is designed to prevent the rope or chain from working againstitself when the roller is turned. It also serves to prevent the rope from winding on itself.

S indicates the safe, the walls of which may beof wood, tin, or galvanized iron, and in either case are perforated to allow free ventilation or wire screen-cloth maybe used. The safe is provided with a number of shelves, L, which may also be perforated, and it is advisable to provide ventilating-openings in the top, T, and bottom, I, of the safe. The safe is provided with lateral notches or bearings n to engage the vertical guide-strips B, so that the safe will move steadily and evenly. This safe is perfectly "entilated, and, as it is not inclosed when below the floor O, the airhas free access to the articles contained therein. It is designed to keep provisions sweet and cool, and to keep them from insects and vermin.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In an elevating or subterranean dumb-waiter, the incasement E, having the operating-roller H and pulley I and the lateral guide-strips B, extending down into the well or sub-cellar, the ventilated safe S, having the lateral bearingsn, and the rope orchain p,extending from said sai'e over said pulley, around said roller, and down ward, carrying the counterbalaneingweight W, substantially as specified.
