At the same time, the structure must be accessible to the deliveryman, etc. through theuse of a key or aknown combination, if the lock is a combination lock, etc.

An object of the present invention is to provide a garment guard structure of simple design, which requires a minimum of efiort on the part of the housewife in obtaining accessto the clothes while safeguarding the clothes against removal except by an authorized person Another object is to provide a guard providing suflicient space between itself andthe door to allow several garments to hang therein,;thus producing a safeuar edic p r mex :X tan er .o ect s 'to provide a garment guard structure which does notinterfere with vision through the door windows and which does not prevent the passage of light throughthe windows,-while at the same time safeguarding clothes 'Suspended upon the door against unauthorized removal. In the structureshown in Figs. 1 'to 4', inclusive, A designates a door and B a door frame surrounding the door. The door A maybeof 'any usual type of construction and may, if'desired, be provided with windows 10. The door A maybe provided, preferably near its upper end, with hooks or supports ll upon which garment hangers may be suspended. In the illustration given, clothes hangers indicated by ;the numeral 12 and carrying garments or garments enclosed by bags may be employed. The door A'may be provided with a hinge structure |3 upon which is mounted the gate l4. The gate 14 maybe provided with a rod frame 15 to which is secur'ed 'angularly-ext'ending wires' [6. Since the 'form of gate' is well known, a detailed description'herein is believed to be unnecessary.

Mounted upon the side' of the door opposite the hinges !3 is a lock IT provided with a keycontrolled bolt !8. It will be understood that instead of employing a key-controlled lock, a combination or other form of lock, which may be manipulated only by .authorized persons, may be employed. In the structure shown, the bolt [8 extends substantially to the adjacent portion of the door frame B, .as shown more clearly in Fig. 3.

The gate frame is provided at its free edge adjacent the lock I'' with a latch bar [9 havin an inwardly-turned flange 20, the flange being apertured at 2l to receive the bolt !8. When the door is open, the latch bar !9, due to the slight play in the parts of the gate str-ucture and to a slight resilience, may be drawn over the edge of the bolt [3 and the door swung to closed position, as shown in Fig. 3. In this position, the adjacent portion of the door frame B prevents the rem-oval of the fiange 20 from the bolt s.

The gate M may be of any desired size, it being sufcient for the purposes of the present invention that the gate enclose the garments sumciently to prevent their unauthorized removal. Further, instead of employing the specific rod and wire structure illustrated, it will be understood that other types of gates may be employed to accomplish the g-uard pur-pose described.

operation In the operation of the structure shown in Figs. l to 4, inclusive, the housewife, upon opening the door, may swing the gate !4 to an open position and may then suspend upon the hook or h-ooks l l garments which are to 'be taken away by the `pick-up man for the dry cleaners,` and the like. The gate !4 may then be swung to closed position and drawn over the extended bolt [8, the resilience of the material moving the flange 20 to! the position shown in Fig. 3. Upon the closing and the looking of the door, the garments are held securely against removal until the pick-up man arrives. The housewife may thus leave the building and will not be required to wait for the pick-up man. The authorized pick-up or deliveryman may, upon his arrival, insert a key into the lock i"? and withdraw the bolt |8 so as to free the flange 20 and latch bar [9. The gate M may then he opened although the door A remains in closed and locked condition. The garments may 'be removed and taken to the dry cleaning establishment, etc. The cleaned garments are later returned by the deliveryman and the hangers are placed upon the support or supports ll. With the door closed and lock-ed, the deliveryman may turn the bolt 18 to the position shown in Fig. 3 to secure the gate 14 against being opened. The housewife, -upon her return, by merely unlocking the door A and moving it away from the rame B, as shown in Fig. i, can readily disengage the latch flang-e 20 from eng-agement with bolt 18. The resilience of the material permits this slight movement so that the flange 28 clears the bolt !8 and the gate I-4 may be swung open to permit the housewife to remove the cleaned garments.

In the modification shown in Figs. 5 to 10, inclusive, the door A mounted within the door frame B is provided near its top With a hook or support 22 upon which a 'Clothes hanger 23 may be Suspended. Upon the hinged side of the door is Secured a hinge 24 upon which is mounted a gate 25. The edges of the gate may be reiniorced, if desired, by a rod 26 and wires 21 may be Secured to the rod, a`s shown best in Figs. 5 and 6.

*Upon the side of the 'door A opposite the hinges 24, I provide a lock 28, which is slideably mounted within a guide b racket 29. The guide bracket 29 is provided with openings 30 through which screws may -be eXten-ded to secure the bracket to the door, and the bracket is also provided with side walls 3! having inwardlyturned flanges 3'2, as shown more clearly in Fig. 10. One of the side walls 31 is preferably provided with an inwardly-turned stop lug 33, which may be formed by striking out a portion of the side wall 3l and forcing it inwardly, as shown more clearly in Figs. 9 and 10.

The lock 28 may be of the usual type of structure and is preferably provided with a lat-erallyextending fiange 34 receivable below the fiange 32 of the bracket 29. The lock 28 is provided with the usual key-controlled tumbler 35, which moves the looking bolt 36 to advanced or retracted positions. Since such a lock structure is of well-known design, a further detailed .desc-ription is believed unnecessary. The side fiange 34 on one side of the lock 28 is preferably cut away at 31 to provide stop shoulders 38, as shown best in Fig. 10.

The gate 25 is preferably turned inwardly at its edges and the looking bolt 36 extends over the rod 26, as shown best in Fig. 6, to latch the gate against being opened;

In the operation of the structure shown in Figs. 5 to 10, inclusive, the housewife, upon opening the door, may move the lock 23 to the right so as to cause the bolt 36 to clear the gate 25, as illustrated best in Fig. 8. The gate 25 may be opened and the garment hangers placed upon the hook 22. The gate may then be swung to closed position, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 7, and the lock 28 may be'slid inwardly to the position shown in Figs. 5 and '7. When the door A is closed, the gate 25 cannot be opened because the lock 28 is adjacent the door frame B and may not then be retracted. However, when the pick-up man arrives, he can insert his key within the lock 28 and retract the bolt 36 to free it from engagement with gate 25 even though the door A `remains closed. Similarly, when he returns the cleaned garments, he can lock the gate 25 about the garments by extending the bolt 36 into engagement with the gate 25, as shown best in Figs. 5, 6 and '7. When the housewife returns, she may unlock the door and move it away from the door frame B, as shown in Fig. 8. Since the lock 28 is no longer obstructed by the door frame B, it may be moved outwardly away from the gate 25 and the gate thus released, as illustrated in Fig. -8. After removing the garments, the housewife may press the slideably mounted lock 28 inwardly to the position shown in Fig. 7 to again lock the gate in closed position. If desired, a tension spring may be attached to the lock 28 so as to normally maintain it in the looking position shown in Fig. 7.

While, in the foregoing specification, I have set forth specific structures in considerable detail for the purpose of illustrating embodiments of my invention, it will be understood that such details may be varied widely by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim: e

1. In combination with a door mounted in a door frame with one side oi said door hinged to said frame and with the -frame adjacent the free side of said door extending laterally' of said' door, a support for garments mounted upon the outside of said door, a gate mounted upon said door for movement into an enclosing position about said support and having a member at one end thereof adapted to be engaged for looking the gate member extensible toward the free side of said door, and a lock member mounted upon said door and equipped with a bolt movable laterally of the door and engageable with said member of said gate to lock the same in said enclosing position, one of said members being movable toward the free side of said door when said door is open to free said gate member from said bolt, said laterally-movable member, however. abutting the laterally-extending portion of said door frame adjacent the free end of said door when said door is closed, whereby lateral move ment of said slidable member is prevented.

2. In combination with a door frame and a door therein hinged at one side to said frame, the free side of said door being of less width than the width of said frame, whereby said frame 'projects outwardly beyond the free side of said door, a garment support mounted upon the outside of said door, a gate mounted upon said door for movement into and away from an enclosing position about said support and having a member at .one end thereof adapted to be engaged for looking the gate member extensible toward the free side of said door, and a lock member Secured to the outside of said door and equipped with a slidable bolt member engageable with said member of said gate for looking said gate, one of said members being movable toward the free end o! said door to effect disengagement of said bolt from said gate member when said door is open, said laterally-movable member of said door a butting the outwardly-projecting portion of said door frame when said door is closed, whereby movement of said laterally-movable member toward the free side of said door to effect disengagement of the gate member with said bolt is prevented while said door remains closed.

3. The structure of claim 2, in which the lock is a key-controlled lock.

4. The structure of claim 2, in which the laterally-movable member is the outer portion ot the gate adjacent the free side of said door.

5. The structure of claim 2, in which the laterally-movable member is the lock which is slidably mounted upon said door.

6. In a garment guard adapted to be attached to the outer surface of a door, a gate hingeably mounted to the door at one side thereoi', a support for garments carried by said door and adapted to be enclosed by said gate when the same is swung across the door. and a lock slideably mounted on said door and equipped with a bolt for looking said gate in said enclosing position, said lock being confined by the door frame to prevent opening of said gate when said door is closed but being slideable outwardly to release said gate from said bolt when said door is opened.

7. In a garment guard adapted to be secured upon the outer surface of a door, a. support mounted upon said door, a gate, means for supporting the gate for movement into an enclosing position about said support, and means, including a slideably mounted lock, for confining said gate in said enclosing position when said door is closed but slideable to release said gate when said door is open.

8. In a garment guard adapted to be supported upon a door, a gate hingeably mounted upon said door along one side thereof, a garment support mounted upon said door and adapted to be enolosed by said gate when said gate is swung across said door, a bracket mounted upon said door, a lock slideably held by said bracket, interlocking means on said lock and bracket for limiting the sliding movement of said lock, and a bolt carried by said lock for engaging said gate to lock the same in said support enclosing position, said lock being oonfined by the door frame when the door is closed to retain said bolt in looking engagement with said gate.

9. In a garment guard adapted to be supported upon a door, a gate hingeably mounted upon said door along one side thereof, a garment support mounted upon said door and adapted to be enclosed by said gate when said gate is swung across said door, a bracket mounted upon said door, a lock slideably held by said bracket, interlocking means on said lock and bracket for limiting the sliding movement of said lock, and a bolt carried by said lock for engaging said gate to look the same in said support enclosing position, said lock being oonfined by the door frame when the door is closed to retain said bolt in looking engagement with said gate, said look being provided with key controlled means for retracting said bolt to free said gate when the door is in closed position.

10. In combination with a door equipped with a support upon which garments may be Suspended, a gate, means for mounting the gate along one side thereof to said door for swinging movement into enclosing position about said support, a bracket mounted upon said door at one side thereof adjacent the door frame and equipped with retaining fianges, a. lock having side flanges slideably engaging the fianges of said bracket and provided with an inwardly-extending bolt, and key controlled means carried by said lock for retracting said bolt and for extending it into engagement with said gate to confine said gate in said enclosing position, said lock being restrained by the door frame when the door is in closed position to prevent release of said gate from said bolt. said lock being slideable to release said gate from said bolt when said door is opened.
