Description

UNITED [STATES PATENT' FFICE.
JOHN P. HALE, OF KANAWHA COURT-HOUSE, VIRGINIA.
I'M'PROVEM ENIT IN EVAPO RATINGVES S ELS.
Specification formin g part of Letters'Patent No. 26, 182, dated November 22,185?.
.To LZZ whom it may concern,.- Be it known that I, JOHN P. HALE, of-Ka nawha Court-House, in the county of Kanawha and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Process of Evaporating Brine and other Liquids and Solutions; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the ac-v companying drawings, making part of this speciiication, in which- Figure lis a plan of a blineevaporating apparatus illustrating my invention. Fig. 2
isavertical sect-ion of theV apparatus in the plane indicated by'the line x :v in Figs. l and 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same in the plane indicated by the' line yy in Figs. 1 and 2.
ISimilar lettersof reference indica-te corr(- sl'ondin'g parts in the several figures. 4
My invention consists in the employment of superheated steam as in superheating the A represents a boiler, such as is commonly i used for what is termed boiling which constitutes the rst stage of the evapoiating process in the manufacture of salt, as commonly practiced in many places; said boiler being made, with the exception of -it-s botto m, o'fy wood.
B is the furnace-for heating said boiler, arranged below it.
Cisthechimney,
D D aretwo evaporating-isterus, arranged lower than the boiler, to receive the brine .therefrom after it has been .evaporated to a certain degree, one of said cisterns, D, being represented with a lining, a a, or false bottom,
and sides of metal, and the other, D', being represented as containing a pipe, 1) or coil to illustrate the two most convenient methods of employing the superheated steam to'heattheir contents.
E E. are the steam-pipes leading from the boiler to the cisterns D D', the former co1nmunicating with the space between the exterior and hollow lining of the 'cistern D, and the latter to the pipe or coil b that is within the cistern D. These pipes E E pass through `the furnace for the purpose of causing the steamto be superheated on its way from the boiler to the cisterns. The said pipes may, however,l be heated by the waste heat in the chimney, instead of in the furnace itself; or
they may connect with superheatingwes sels of any desirable forni in the furnace or chimney. Vith-the exception of the arrangements for superheating the steam, the abovedescribed apparatus does not materially differ from the apparatus that is in common use for evaporating brine, and is well known.
By the use of my improvement the evaporation will be much expedited. Each cistern or evaporating-vessel will be capable of performing a greater amount of work, and hence asmaller number will be required` to do a given amount of work in a given time, and so the. first cost of apparatus will be reduced, and the loss by leakage and wast-age of varions kinds from the cisterns or vessels that are dispensed with will be avoided.
' My invention is also applicable to the' drying of salt or other substances, subsequently to the so-called evaporating process.
vI do not claim the use of the vapor arising 'fromone portion of the iiquid to be evaporated for heating or evaporating another portion of theliquid.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ics--- The superheating of the steamer vapor arisingfrom the evaporation of the brine, substantially as and for the purpose herein Shown and described..
' J.- '13. HALE.
