SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,625, datedl July 25, 1882.
. Application led March 10, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. DEVILLE L. PAEMEN- TER, Ot' Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Label-Package, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for presenting druggistsand other labels in a form wherebythe labeling of vials and other packages is greatly expedited and rendered less liable Io to' error than by the old method.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention in its preferred form.
I provide one or more sheets, A, of thin paper, of suitable quality for labels, and imprint I5 the same With the names of drugs or other articles in some ordery convenient for reference, preferably in alphabetical order, and in columns B separated and surrounded by blank or unprinted spaces C. I coat theentire rear zo surface of such sheet with mucilage, isinglass,
or other suitable adhesive substance in a similar lmanner to that employed for postagestamps. I then, with a suitable sharp instrument, partially sever the labels from one another and from the blank columns C by means of incisions D. Those portions ofthe sheet immediately in rear of the unprinted portions O are Inoistened and are made to adhere to a sheet of paper or card-board, E.- The device 3o is then in condition for use, which is done by separating with the finger-nail or any thin iny strument the desired label or labels, which, not being adherent t9 the backing and almost wholly separated by the incisions D, are easily 3 5 detached in their proper shape. At G a label is shown thus separated from the sheet.
To put the device in still more convenient .nform,'l customarily bind a pack or number ot' such'mounted sheets in a book, F, which may 4o'cont'ain or constitute a complete repertory of the labels used in any particular business or establishment. Such a book is represented in the drawing. This arrangement keeps the labels at and clean and in perfect condition for instant use without the necessity of a cuttinginstrument to separate the labels, or the consumption of important time and serious liability ot' error incident to the methods in com mon use, and supersedes the necessity of previous separation in considerable numbers, with lia- 5o bility to curl up, to adhere to one another, and
to be otherwise deteriorated.
Labels th us cut without being entirelyseparated can be of any desired symmetrical form and uniform dimensions, insteadof being in the ragged and unshapely form they assume as commonly cut by knife or scissors.
The backing being of a different shade or color to the labels, or ot' a color that will contrast with that of the labels, facilitates observa- 6o tion of those which remain mounted.
This system enables the user to detect quickly any lack or approaching lack ot a particular label and serves as a reminder to supply the missing quantity. 65
A modification of myinvention may consist in using a backing whose portion in rear of the columns of labels is cut away, so as to enable the removal of any label by pressure from behind.
I claim as new and of my'inventionl. A label-package in which one or more sheets of' labels are arranged in columns, with intervening and surrounding blank spaces, and coated with an adhesive substance on their rear, and partially separated with a cutting or incising instrument, and mounted upon a suitable backing by adhesion of the blank portions, the labels proper being left unattached, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A label-package in which a number ot' sheets prepared and mounted as above describedand .claimed are bound into the form of a book in the man ner designated and shown.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
ORVILLE L. PARMENTER.
