It is an object of the invention to provide a window sash construction of the type which is particularly adapted to be made of metal, such as extruded aluminum sections, having improved means for securing the end of the balance tape to the vertical side frame member of the sash.
It is a more specific object of the invention to' provide a metal window sash construction having a stainless steel plate adapted to be secured to the upper corner of the sash and provided with a hook or tongue portion extending downwardly along the side frame member of the sash constituting an anchoring means for detachably receiving the end connecting member of a balance tape.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from a description'of the preferred form thereof which is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an upper corner of a sash having incorporated therein a construction embodying the principles of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an exploded view showing in perspective the corner of the sash, the depending end of a balance tape and the anchor plate for securing the end of the tape to the sash;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the corner of the sash with portions of the weather strip member broken away; and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
The sash illustrated in Fig. 1 is a portion of a lower sash which is adapted to be mounted in the frame of either a single hung or double hung sash type window. While a lower sash is illustrated, the principles of the invention may be applied to an upper sash in the same manner.
The top horizontal rail member ID of the sash is secured at its end in abutting relation to the vertical side member H to form the corner joint. The members In and II may be secured to each other by bolts or similar fastening means.
The vertical side member I I comprises a front plate or flange member l2, a rearwardly extending web member l3 and a rear flange member l4, preferably formed integrally as an extruded metal section.
The front member 12 is provided at its inner edge with an inwardly directed flange [5 (Fig. 4) which forms one side of the glazing channel for the glass pane (not shown). The inner edge of the rear flange member l4 extends only to the web member l3 and is there provided with a thickened portion l6 having a relatively narrow 2 inwardly opening, vertically extending groove' l'l for receiving the glazing beadfnot shown) which secures the pane in the glazing channel.
The front flange member I2 is provided adja: cent its outer edge with a forwardly facing, vertically extending channel-like recess or groove l8 and'the rear flange member I4 is provided ad acent its outer edge with a similar groove 19 which faces rearwardly.
A weather strip channel member 20 having parallel legs 2| and 22 is provided, on its outer surface, with a non-metallic weather strip 23, the edges of which are secured to the channel-member 20 by bead-like formations 24 and 25,p ro; vided by curling outwardly the edges of the legs 2| and 22. The weather strip member is mounted on the vertical sash member I by positioning the bead formations 24 and 25 in the parallel grooves l8 and I! of the sash member.
Transversely aligned slots 26 and 21 are provided a short distance from the top of the sash by cut-out portions in the outer edges of the members l2 and I4 for a purpose which will be described.
A- tape end anchor member 28 is provided which is preferably made of stainless steel plate. It is cut and shaped to provide'a relatively wide top or horizontal portion 29 and a relatively narrow integral leg portion 30 which extends downwardly of the top plate 29 and terminates in an outwardly offset tongue or hook portion 3 I. The top plate 29 is of a size sufficient to cover the top of the vertical sash member H" and to extend a short distance over the top surface 32 of the rail member Ill. The leg portion 30 is of a width which adapts it to be positioned in the channel or groove formed betweenthe inner surfaces of the flange members I2 and I4 and is provided adjacent its lower end with lateral extensions 33 ane'sa which fit into the transversely aligned slots 26 and 21 in the edges of the flange members l2 and H. The offset portion 35 connecting the leg 30 and the hook'3l forms a shoulder which is engaged by' the apertured attaching member 36 on the end of the balance tape 31 when the members are inassembled relation as inFig. l.
The anchor member 28 is retained in position by the engagement of the lateral extensions 33 and 34 in the transverse slots 26 and 21 and the tension in the balance tape 31. As anadditional means for securing the anchor member 28 to the sash it is preferred to provide an aperture 38in the top plate member 29 and a threaded aperture 39 in the rail member l0 for reception of a securdesired manner against downward movement. f
The anchor plate 28 is disengaged from the sash by removing the securing screw 40 and moving plate 28 outwardly to free the lateral extensions 33 and 34 from the slots 26v and 21. whereupon the end of the balance tape 31 is released. The weather strip carrying channel may also be removed vertically of the sash since the bead formations 24 and 25 are slidably positioned" in the grooves l8 and I9.
While specific materials and details of construction have been referred to, it will be under.- stood that other materials and details of construction may be resorted to within thespirit of the. invention.
, I, claim:
1. In, a sash corner .constructionhaving a horizontal top rail and a vertical side frame mem ber secured in abutting relation adjacent their ends with said side frame member having transversely spaced outwardly directed front and rear sideflanges and transversely aligned outwardly opening slots in. said side flanges adjacent the top thereof, a. tape end anchor memher having a horizontally directed plate por-. tion extending over the endof said side frame member and. an 'end portion of said top rail, and a vertically directed plate portion extending downwardly along. the outer edgesof said side flanges, said horizontal plate portion having an aperture therein for receiving a fastening ele-. ment. to secure the same. to said top rail, said downwardly directed vertical plate portion having a hook formation for receiving in detachable relation the end of a balance tape and laterally extending members thereon adapted to be positioned in said transverse slots whereby to secure said plate tosaid sash corner in tape anchoring position.
2. In a sash corner construction having a vertical side member and a cross rail in end abutting relation with the side of said side member, said side member being provided with parallel trans versely spaced front and rear flanges having oppositely facing vertical grooves in the front and rear faces adjacent the outer edges thereof andtransversely aligned outwardly opening slots in the outer edges of said flanges which slots are located a short distance from the end of. said side member, said oppositely facing grooves being adapted to receive a weather strip channel of generally U -shaped section having edge formationsslidably positioned in. said, vertical grooves and encompassing the outer edges of said meme ber, a, balance tape end retaining means comprising an angular plate member having a vertically directed leg positioned along the outer edges. of .said flanges between. said side member and said. weather strip channel, said vertically directed leg having laterally extending abutment portions receivable in said transverse slots and an outwardly extending hook. for receiving the end of. said. balance. tape,,said tape end retaining means having a horizontal, leg providing abutmentformations atthe end of. said side. member extending laterally over the ends of said vertical grooves for engagement by the end of said weather strip channel to position the same on the side member in encompassing relation with said vertical leg of said tape end retaining means.
3. A balance tape anchor plate adapted for attachment to the top corner of a window sash -whichsash is characterized by a vertical side frame member provided with outwardly directed transversely spaced vertical side flanges and transversely aligned outwardly opening slots in the. side flanges adjacent the top thereof, said anchor plate comprising a body portion adapted to be positioned in the space between the side flanges of the frame member, laterally extending members on the body portion adapted to be positioned in the transverse slots in the side flanges of the frame member and a downwardly directed hook formation for receiving in detachable relation the end of a balance tape.

A balance tape anchor member adapted for attachment to thecorner of a window sash which sash includes a vertical side frame member provided.with outwardly directedtransversely spaced vertical side flanges for receiving in sliding relation thereon a channel-shaped weather strip and transversely aligned. outwardly opening slots in the outer edges of the side flanges spaced inwardly of. the end. thereof,, said anchor member comprising an. angle plate having a horizontal leg adapted to be positioned over the end of the side frame member and a vertical leg adapted to be positioned along the vertical side flanges of the side frame member, said horizontal leg being of sufiicient size to extend beyond the lateral faces of the vertical side flanges and form an. abutment for the end of a weather strip said vertical leg having laterally directed extensions which are adapted to be received in the slots in the vertical. side. flanges and said vertical leg terminating in. a downwardly extending portion forming. a hook for receiving the end of a balance tape.
6. A. balance tape anchor member adapted for attachment. to a window sash corner construction which isv characterized by a vertical side frame memberprovicled' with. outwardly directed transversely spaced verticalside flanges and transversely aligned outwardly opening slots in the side flanges adjacent the, end thereof and which is further characterized by a cross rail member, in end. abuttingrelation with the inner side of the side frame member adjacent the end thereof, said anchor member comprising an angle plate having. a'horizontal leg adapted to be positioned over the end of the side frame member and a vertical leg adapted to be positioned along the vertical sideflanges of the side frame member,
