An object of this invention is to provide a device which is adapted to attach to a part of a conventional boat, for example the transom thereof, which consists of a mounting plate having a wall extending therefrom and a cover plate which is hinged to the mounting plate, there being special provision between the wall and the cover plate to accommodate a lock so that the 'cover maybe held substantially fixed with respect to-themounting plate and the wall, whereby when a locking rod or bolt is passed through an opening in the wall. and has a wing nut thereon, the wing nut may be held in a slot in the cover and the bolt arranged for sliding movement through the opening in the wall. By this expedient, a hook or-a number of hooks attached to the rod or bolt are capable of beingattached to a part ofthe motor clamp so that itois impossible to remove the motor clamp from the boat unless the anti-theft device is broken or opened.

Reference is first made to ,the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1-3. Here a boat l fragmentarily shown is provided with ,the usual parts, the transom l2 being most pertinent, although the device may be attached'to any part of the boat. The most practical use of the invention is on the transom inasmuch as the outboard motor [4 is generally held by means of a conventional clamp 16 .to the transom of a boat.

Therefore, when the nut 64 is rotated in one direction the rod 32 is pulled inwardly through the opening 30. A part of the wing nut is adapted to be disposed in the reduced part 44 of the slot 40, when the cover 42 is hinged to the closed position to accommodate the lock 52. Through this expedient the nut 64 cannot be rotated and, therefore, the rod 32 cannot be moved. j g i A plurality of hooks 68 and iii are secured by means ofeyes to the eye 35 of the bolt or rod 32 and are adapted to lock on the clamping screws [8. Through this action the outboard motor clamp H3 cannot be separated from the transom IQ of the boat unles the lock 52 is removed and the device disassembled. Resilient means opposing the sliding movement of the .rod or bolt 32 in one direction is provided. This means consists of a spring 12 which reacts upon a collar 74 which is fixed to the rod 32. The spring also reacts upon a washer l6 which is simply disposed on the outer surface of the wall 28. Therefore, when the nut 64 is tightened the rod 32 is pulled downwardly to firmly clamp the hooks 68 andll) on the clamp screws I6 against the opposing forceof the spring 12. Reference is now made to Figure 4 wherein the second embodiment of the invention is disclosed; The internal structure, make-up and operation of the embodiment of Figure 4 is identical to that previously described. The outside wall 80 which would normally correspond to the wall or side 5B is of slightly diiferent shape. 'The'device' isarranged in this fashion so that it-may be more properly-and easily usedin connection with the transom 8 2 of a boat which has a'brace 8 5. rising at the center thereof. This is simply "another type of conventional boat and the locking device 88 is adapted specifically for this type of transom. In lieu of the pair of hooks 68 and 10, only one hook 88 is used at the end of the bolt 90. This is the case inasmuch as it is contemplated to use two

identical locking devices

86 and 92 in instances wherein there is adivided transom. Therefore, only one hook 823 is necessary.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1, For use with an outboard motor'clamp, an anti-theft device comprising a. mounting plate adapted. to be fixed to a part of a boat, a wall having an opening therein and extending from said mounting plate, a cover plate hinged to said ,mounting plate and having a slot, means connected with said wall and said cover plate to accommodate a lock for holding said cover plate substantially fixed with respect to said cover plate, a rod slidably disposed in said opening and having a locking element disposed thereon and .partialy disposed in said slot, and means secured to said rod for fastening said rod to a part of the 'mountingplate and having a slot, means connected with said wall and said cover plate to accommodate a lock for holding said cover plate substantially fixed with respect to said cover plate,

a bolt passed through said opening and having a '4 nut threaded thereon and bearing against one surface of said wall so that when said nut is rotated said bolt is pulled through said opening, at least one hook secured to said rod to clamp on a part of the motor clamp. v

3. For use With an outboard motor clamp, an

anti-theft device comprising a mounting plate adapted to be fixed to apart of a boat, a wall having an opening therein and extending from said mounting plate, a cover plate hinged to said mounting plate and having a slot, means connected with said wall and said cover plate to occommodate a lock for holding said cover plate anti-theft device comprising a ,mounting plate adapted to be fixed to a part of a boat, a wall having an opening therein and extending from said mounting plate, a cover plate hinged to said mounting plate and having a slot, means connected with said wall and said cover plate to accommodate a lock for holding said cover plate substantially fixed with respect to said cover plate, a bolt passed through said opening, and having a nut threaded thereon and I bearing against one surface of said wall so thatwhen I i said nut is rotated said-bolt is pulled through said'opening, at least oneihook secured to-said rod-to clamp on a part of the motor clamp and a part of said nut being disposed in saidslot when said cover plate is fixed with respectto said cover plate to prevent rotation of said nut, and a spring reacting on saidrod and said-Wall opposing the operation of said rod in one direction. 3 i

A locking device for an outboard motor clamp for mounting on a boat and having a clamp screw, said lockin'g'device comprising an'ap'er tured case mounted onthe boat, a bolteritering the case through the opening thereinil'a nut anchoring said bolt in the'caseanchoring means connecting said bolt to the clamping screw, and
