Claims. (01. 24239) The present invention relates to a bobbin hanger and more particularly relates to a bobbin hanger provided with means for stopping the winding action of a bobbin supported thereby when a predetermined quantity of yarn has been wound thereon.
In the following specification and claims the term yarn is employed in a general sense to apply to all kinds of strand materials, either textile or otherwise, and the designation package is intended to mean the product of a winding machine whatever its form.
One type of winding machine in common use today is known as a .redraw machine. This type of machine is well known to those skilled in the art and, therefore, only so much of it as is necessary for a complete understanding of the present invention will be described herein. Redraw machines are customarily employed to wind yarn onto bobbins adapted for use in twisting machines preparatory to the yarn being twisted on said twisting machines. ,One well known type of redraw machinejis made up of a plurality of windingunits each of which comprises a pair of rotatable driving wheels carried by a shaft. A pivotally mounted bobbin hanger located above the driving wheels for swinging movement towards said wheels into operative position and away from said wheels into inoperative position, and means for traversing yarn along the length of a bobbin held by the hanger to cause yarn to be wound thereon in layers. The bobbin hanger customarily is a U-shaped yoke pivoted at its closed side and being provided atits open side with means for rotatably carrying a bobbin. The means for rotatably carrying the bobbin are also adapted to engage the driving wheels to be rotatedthereby and to, in turn, rotate the bobbin to wind yarn thereon.
It is highly desirable that all bobbins contain the same predetermined quantity of yarn to facilitate the eflicient operation of the twisting machines that are to process the full bobbins, to eliminate waste yarn and other reasons apparent to those skilled in the art. The present invention provides a bobbin hanger for a redraw machine that incorporates a mechanism adapted to pivot the bobbin hanger away from the driving wheels to stop the rotation of the bobbin when a predetermined quantity of yarn has been wound'thereon to stop any further winding.
Whereas thespecific embodiment of the present invention disclosed herein will be described in connection with a redraw machine, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that it can be employed in other types of winding machines.
It is, therefore, one object of the present invention to provide a, bobbin hanger for a winding machine that will stop the winding operation when a predetermined quantity of yarn has been wound on a bobbin held thereby.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a mechanism for rotatably supporting a bobbin in a winding machine and which will at a predetermined point in the winding operation stop said winding operation.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a bobbin hanger for a winding machine including a size determining mechanism adapted to move said bobbin hanger from an operative to an inoperative position upon the wound bobbin attaining a predetermined size. i
Another object of the present invention is to provide a pivotal bobbin hanger having means to pivot said hanger out of bobbin driving position when a predetermined quantity of yarn has been wound on said bobbin.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
Theinvention accordingly comprises the apparatus possessing the construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which are exemplified in the following detailed disclosure, and the scope of the application of which willbe indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic plan view, with parts broken away, of a bobbin hanger incorporating the present invention and showing said bobbin hanger elevated into inoperative position;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the bobbin hanger also in elevated position;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line III-III of Fig. l and looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 4 is a view similarto Fig. 3 but showing the bobbin hanger lowered into winding position.
The bobbin hanger of the present invention comprises a generally U-shaped yoke formed from a pair of interconnected arms. The yoke is pivoted at its closed end to the frame of a winding machine to permit the open end of the yoke to swing towards andaway from a pair of rotating driving wheels thatare adapted to rotate a bobbin supported by said yoke to cause yarn to be wound thereon. Any suitable means for traversing the yarn longitudinally of the bobbin to cause the yarn to be wound thereon in layers may be employed. The free ends of the arms forming the bobbin hanger yoke are each provided with bobbin holding and rotating means comprising a rotatably journaled roller adapted to engage one of the driving wheels to be rotated thereby and having an axially aligned gudgeon adapted to fit into the bore of the bobbin to center it. Each roller is also provided with a gripping disk, or flange, adapted to frictionally engage the ends of the bobbin to rotate it. A pivoted spring I loaded lever is provided and is so located that it engages the underside of the bobbin hanger yoke to permit its spring to lift the bobbin hanger, and a bobbin carried thereby away from they driving wheels. A latch mechanism is provided to hold said lever out of engagement with the bobbin hanger yoke against the action of its spring to permit the driving rolls to engage the driving wheels. v A feeling device is connected to said latch and is adapted to be engaged by the yarn wound on the bobbin, when a predetermined amount of yarn has been wound, to release the latch and permit the lever to pivot the bobbin hanger yoke away from the driving wheels to thus terminate the winding operation.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown a bobbin hanger yoke to consisting of arms 12 and I4 pivotally mounted on a, convenient frame member 16 of a redraw machine by means of a bracket l 8 to permit the yoke to be pivoted downwardly toward and upwardly away from a pair of driving rolls 20 carried by rotatable shaft 22. Arm l 2 of yoke I0 is a unitary L-shaped member having lugs 24 formed thereon to pivotally mount arm l2 on bracket I8 by means of pintle 48. Arm I4 is formed from two lengths of material 26 and 28 pivoted together at one end by pin 29 to form a second generally L-shaped arm. Length 26 is adjustably carried by arm 12 by means of bolt 30 and slot 32 to permit the spacing Of arms l2 and 14 to be adjustedto fit bobbins having different lengths. A spring (not shown) is provided at the pivotal connection '29 of lengths 26 and 28 of arm M to urge length 28 in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. l, to cause the arms to exert a pressure on the ends of a bobbin held in yoke 10, and to ermit arm [4 to be :rotated away from arm l2 to release a bobbin held in the yoke. A handle member 34 is formed on the end of arm [4 to facilitate the opening of yoke I0.
The free ends of arms l2 and 14 each have a roller 36, preferably covered with a friction material such as cork or rubber, rotatably journaled at one end by any convenient member as, for example, by means of a stub shaft carried by each arm. The other end of each roller is provided with a concentric rim or flange 38 which is preferably faced with a friction material, such as cork or rubber. Each roller 36 is also provided with a gud'geon 40 in axial alignment with said roller and extending beyond the face of rim or flange 38. A bobbin is releasably placed in yoke It! by grasping handle 34 and swinging length 28 of arm I 4 to the right, as viewed in Figs. land 2, thus opening the yoke to permit the insertion of a bobbin. Handle member 34 is then released permitting arm 14 to swing to the left to cause gudgeons 40 to enter the bore of the bobbin to thus axially align it with rollers 36 and to permit rims or flanges 38 to press against the ends of 4 the bobbin to grip it so that rotation of rollers 36 will cause the bobbin to rotate.
A bell crank lever 42, comprising an upper leg 44 and a lower leg 46, is pivotally mounted on pintle pin 48, which also pivotally supports yoke I0, between one of the lugs 24 and bracket I8. Upper leg 44 functions as a starting handle in a manner that will become apparent hereinafter and extends forwardly and upwardly. Lower leg 46 extends forwardly beneath bobbin hanger yoke I0. Bell crank lever 42 is spring loaded for rotation in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Figs. 3 and 4, by means of a spring 50 having one of its ends'attached to an extension ill of bracket l8 and its other end connected to rod 52 which is pivotally connected at one of its ends to the end of lower'leg 46 of bell crank lever 42. The turning movement exerted by spring 50 on bell crank lever 42 is sufficient to permit lever 42 to lift yoke l0 and a full bobbin of yarn carried thereby and tohold them thus elevated.
An elongated keeper member 54, provided with an upwardly facing shoulder 56, is pivotally mounted at its upper end to bell crank lever--42 adjacent pintle pin 48 by means of pin 58. "The lower end of keeper member 54 is supported for sliding motion by means of slot formed therein which slides on pivot pin 62 carri-edby bracket 18.
A second bell crank lever 64, comprising an upper leg '66 and a lower leg 68, is pivotally mounted on pivot pin 62. Upper leg 66' extends generally vertically, parallel to, and adjacent keeper member 54, and lower leg 68 extends forwar-dly to a point located beneath a bobbin carried by yoke HI. A latch member 70 adapted to cooperate with shoulder 56 of keeper member 54 is provided on the end of upper, leg 66. Bell crank lever 64 is spring loaded for rotation in-a clockwise direction, as viewed in Figs. 3 and 4, by means of helical spring 65 carried by pivot pin 62, one end of spring 65 engages the underside of lowerleg 68 and the other end engages bracket I8. The distance between pivot pin 62 and latch member 70 is such that when leg 46 of bell crank lever 42 is lowered by depressing upper leg, or operating handle 44, sufficiently to permit rollers 36 to rest on driving rolls 2!! latch member Tu will pass over shoulder 56 of keeper member 54.
An eccentric roller 12 is adjustably mounted on the end of lower leg 68 by means ofrod '14 which passes through a hole in leg 68 and is held therein by means of a set screw. Eccentric roller 12 is mounted on rod 14 so that it is free to revolve thereabout on a horizontal axis. Eccentric roller 72 normally assumes the position illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, i. e. with its low point uppermost, due to the unbalance of the roller. Roller 12 is adjusted on bell crank lever '64 by means of rod 14 so that when the bobbin hanger is in its winding position, as illustrated in Fig. 4, the low point of roller 12 is spaced from the core of a bobbin carried by bobbin hanger yoke It a distance equal 'to the thickness of yarn it is desired to wind on said bobbin.
The bobbin hanger of the present invention functions in the following manner. Yoke I'D is first opened and an empty bobbin is placed between the arms 12 and [4 for rotation by rollers 36. The end of the yarn to be wound on the bobbin is attached thereto and is threaded through whatever traversing means is employed. Upper leg 44 of bell crank lever 42 is pressed downwardly rotating said he'll crank lever in a counterclockwise direction :as viewed in Fig. 3,.
5, counterclockwise"rotation of bell :crank lever fl permits yoke I O topivot downwardly until rollers 36 engage "the peripheries of driving rolls 20 to thus rotate the bobbin'and cause the yarn to be wound thereon. Counterclockwise rotation of bell crank lever 42 also causes keeper member 54 to be moved downwardl'y to cause its shoulder 56 to pass below the level of latch, carried by the upper leg 66 of bell crank lever 64. As shoulder ,56 passes latch Ill helical spring 65 rotates bell'crank lever 64 in a clockwise direction tomove latch 10 over shoulder 56 to thereby latch bell crank lever 42 in its downward position. When the desired quantity of yarn has been wound on the bobbin, the wound yarn Y will engage the uppermost surface of eccentric roller "l2 to rotate said roller. Inasmuch as the roller 12 is an eccentric and the combined weight of yoke Ill and yarn Y is greater than the resistance of bell crank lever 64 to counterclockwise rotation, the rotation of roller 12 forces lower leg 68 of bell crank lever 64 downwardly to Withdraw latch lll from shoulder 56 of keeper member 54. The release of latch 10 from shoulder 56 permits spring 50 to rotate bell crank lever 12 in a clockwise direction. Clockwise rotation of bell crank lever 42 causes its lower leg 46 to engage the underside of bobbin hanger yoke ill to lift said yoke and bobbin away from driving rolls 20 to stop the winding action.
Since certain changes may be made in the above apparatus without departing from the scope of the invention herein involved, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. A bobbin hanger for use in winding machines comprising a pivoted yoke adapted to rotatably carry a bobbin and adapted to be pivoted from a first position wherein said bobbin is rotated to cause yarn to be wound thereon to a second position wherein said bobbin is not rotated, a pivotally mounted lever adapted upon pivotal movement in one direction to engage said yoke and pivot it from said first position to said second position and adapted upon pivotal movement in a second direction to permit said yoke to pivot to said first position, spring means urging said lever in said one direction, a keeper carried by said lever, a second pivotally mounted lever, latch means carried by said second lever, resilient means urging said second lever in a direction to permit said latch to engage said keeper, and means carried by said second lever adjacent said bobbin adapted to be engaged by yarn wound thereon to move said second lever in the opposite direction to release said latch from said keeper.
2. A bobbin hanger for use in winding machines comprising a pivoted yoke adapted to rotatably carry a bobbin and adapted to be pivoted from a first position wherein said bobbin is rotated to cause yarn to be wound thereon to a second position wherein said bobbin is not rotated, a pivotally mounted lever adapted upon pivotal movement in one direction to engage said yoke and pivot it from said first position to said second position and adapted upon pivotal movement in a second direction to permit said yoke to pivot to said first position, spring means urging said lever to said one direction, a keeper carried by said lever, a second pivotally mounted lever, latch means carried by said second lever,
6: resilient means urging said second lever in ,a direction: to permit .said latch to engage said keeper, and ,an-eccentric roller carried by said second lever adjacent said bobbin adapted'to be engagedby yarn wound thereon to move said second lever in the opposite direction to release said latch from saidkeeper. q a I1 3. A bobbin hanger for use in windingv ma.- chines comprising a pivoted yoke adapted to rotatably carry a bobbin and adapted to be pivoted from, a first position wherein said bobbin .is mtated to cause yarn to be woundthereonto a second position. wherein said bobbin is not to; tated, a pivotally mounted bell crank lever having one of its legs located beneath said yoke and adapted upon upward rotation to engage said yoke and pivot it from said first position to said second position and adapted upon downward rotation to permit said yoke to pivot to said first position, the second leg of said bell crank lever being located above said yoke and serving as an operating means to rotate said first mentioned leg downwardly, spring means urging said first mentioned leg upwardly, a keeper carried by said bell crank lever, a second pivotally mounted bell crank lever, latch means carried by one leg of said second bell crank lever and adapted to engage said keeper to hold said first mentioned bell crank lever in a downward position, the other leg of said second bell crank lever being adapted to be moved by yarn wound on said bobbin to release said latch means from said keeper.
4. A bobbin hanger for use in winding machines comprising a bracket, a yoke pivotally mounted on said bracket adapted to rotatably carry a bobbin and adapted to be pivoted from a first position wherein said bobbin is rotated to cause yarn to be wound thereon to a second position wherein said bobbin is not rotated, a bell crank lever pivoted on said bracket and having one of its legs located beneath said yoke and adapted upon upward rotation thereof to engage said yoke and pivot it from said first position to said second position and adapted upon downward rotation to permit said yoke to pivot to said first position, the second leg of said bell crank lever being located above said yoke and serving as an operatin means to rotate said first mentioned leg downwardly, spring means urging said first mentioned leg upwardly, a keeper car ried by said bell crank lever, a second bell crank lever pivoted on said bracket adjacent said keeper, latch means carried by one leg of said second bell crank lever, means urging said latch. means into engagement with said keeper to hold said first mentioned bell crank lever in a downward position, means carried by the other leg of said second bell crank lever adapted to contact the yarn wound on said bobbin to thereby pivot said second bell crank lever to release said latch means from said keeper.
5. A bobbin hanger for use in winding machines comprising a bracket, a yoke pivotally mounted on said bracket adapted to rotatably carry a bobbin and adapted to be pivoted from a first position wherein said bobbin is rotated to cause yarn to be wound thereon to a second position wherein said bobbin is not rotated, a bell crank lever pivoted on said bracket and having one of its legs located beneath said yoke and adapted upon upward rotation thereof to engage said yoke and pivot it from said first position to said second position and adapted upon downward rotation to permit said yoke to pivot to said first position, the second leg or said bell crank lever being located above said yoke and serving as "an operating means to rotate-said first mentioned le downwardly, spring means urging said first mentionedhleg' upwardly, a keeper carried by saidribell crank lever, .a second bell crank lever pivoted on said bracketadjacent :said keeper, latch means carried by one leg of said second bell crank lever, means urging: said latch means intowenga gement with said; keeper to hold said 10 first mentioned bell crank lever in a downward position, an eccentric :roller carried by the other leav otsaid second bell crank lever adjacent said 8; bobbinrand adapted to be contacied by wound thereon to rotate ,said roller to thereby pivot said second .bell crank lever toreleasexsald latch means from said keepeit.
