11 Claims. 1
This invention relates to devices for lifting invalids in hospital beds and for moving such invalids to and from their beds.
In hospitals, as is well known, patients who are unable to move themselves, are frequently required to be lifted or moved in or from the bed, for purposes of medical attention, changing the bed linen, toilet purposes, and for many other reasons. This lifting and moving of patients severely taxes the strength of nurses, and two or more nurses are frequently required for this purpose. Furthermore, the use of the bed pan for toilet purposes of bed-ridden patients in hospitals is well-known to be unsatisfactory, owing to the unnatural position required to be assumed the patient in using the pan.
I have accordingly devised a mechanism for lifting and moving patients in, and to and from their beds, and which will permit a patient able to sit up to use a bed-pan in a normal sitting position. My mechanism can be readily and safely used, with little expenditure of strength by the nurses, and is of light and simple construction, and sure and efficient in operation. Briefly my device comprises a horizontal wheelsupported base frame to extend under a bed, and a rigid vertical post thereon carrying lifting mechanism, including power means, a vertically movable horizontal support for the patient, and back and arm rests. My device is charac terized by being able to be pushed up to the side of the bed bearing the patient and'the horizontal support, adjusted to the proper height, is extended into the bed, and the patient rolled thereon. The patient is thus supported on the horizontal support in a sitting, semi-reclining or fully reclining position, as desired, while facing or lying transversely of the support and sideways to the vertical post, and can be held in that position or raised and lowered as desired. Further handling or moving of the patient by hand once he is positioned on the horizontal support is thus unnecessary. In addition to tr e purposes previously described my device is usable for medical examinations, as a barber chair and even for surgical operations, and in fact may be used in any situation where it is desired to move or lift a patient from a bed or in a bed for any purpose, and whether the patient be conscious or unconscious, or paralyzed or not.
Before explaining in detail the present invention it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illus- 2 trated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not or limitation, and it is not intended to limit the invention claimed herein beyond the requirements of the prior art.
Other objects and advantages of my device will appear in the following'specification and accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is aside elevation with parts broken away of my device; 7

In the drawings, iii represents a horizontal 7 base or platform of my lifting device, which is designed to extend under a bed and is supported on wheels H in suitable bearings (not shown) shaft 24 which is rotatably mounted in the.
pump housing. Secured to the innerend. of
the shaft 24 is an arm 24 havingatits free" end a roller 90 which is received--.in.-a groove The fork: 9 is cut away as indicated at.9. (Figs.. 4,.'l,..8, 9. and and the handle 24'carries'a' pin 24 A:
9| in the piston 24 (Figs. 6 and 7);
which projects into said cut-away portion.. spring 92 urges the pin 24 into engagement with one wall of the cut-away portion 9 of'the fork. as indicated in Fig. 4. The block .3 (see-par.-
ticularly Figs. 3 and '7) isprovided .with a square recess which-receives a-tongue 96 at the lower end of the handle-24... Asshown in .Fig. .4 the.
width of the tongue 93 .is substantially the same as that-of the. recess -95while thethickness .of:
the tongue isless than the width of .said recess to permit in-or-out movement-of the handle 24 fora purpose to be hereinafter described. When the pump handle=,.24 is.moved. from its position inFigs. 3 and 4-tothe'righton its pivot-24,- it
will move the piston 24 to vtheleftand thus.
create a vacuum atthe. right endiof vthe pump cylinder. This .will causefluid. to... be drawn therein through-inlet valve 24 (Fig. 6). andon. the return stroke of the piston this .fluid will.
be expelled therefrom, throughoutlet .valve 24 and into tube 23, and thencethrough. tube 23- to valve member 25.. From valve member25 the fluid in turn is. -directed. through passage thereof (Fig. 4), and thence through-tube 26 to cylinder 21 and beneath the lifting piston 28- which is connected tothe support 5.. This lifts the support S on the post l5. fluid medium. .is directed. through .passage |8 of the valve member 25 and thencethrough tube- 29 .to brake-mechanism..30 of. suitable design At the same time which in .turnoperatesbrake 3| to.,push'. the
same against the floor F. Because the force exerted by the brake spring.3ll -is less than the resistance to the entry of the .fluid. in lift cylinder. 21, brake 3|"will1operate immediately, and
it will be understood that'check valve' IS in.
passage l8 (Fig. 4) willretain the operating fluid in brake mechanism 30 and thereafter con-.
tinued operation of the pump handle 24 delivers" to elevate the supports-and to-operate the brake mechanism 30. Alternative and'separate brake mechanism-independently operated, may be provided,* but-it will be understoodthatthe inclusion of such mechanism is whollyoptional.
Va1ve-member-25 shown 'indetail in Figs. 4 to 10 inclusive andinclddes rod '35- and pin 31 slidable-in a slot 35in the valve casing; The i pin-31 is connected with-a slide "I having. azdepending arm" :1 which'is :received in the slot. 8*
of a plate 8 secured to the pump-handle supporting means orforkfl. Pivoted levers 38 and 38 carrying valve members 39 and 39 respectively are held in engagement with the ends of the rod 35 by a spring 35.
To lower the support S, pump handle 24 is given a quarter turn about a vertical axis in a clockwise direction, from its position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Fig. 8. This unlocks pump handle 24 for in-or-out movement about its pivot'24 Pump handle'24is'then pulled outwardly about pivot 24, thereby unseating valve member 39 attached to pivot lever 38 (Fig. 9)., which in turn releases the fluid pressure in cylinderv 2l,.perrnitting operating fluid therein to return through tubes 26 and 4 to the supply tank20. In this way it is obvious that support Sisgraduallylowered and when support S is lowered to the desired level, pump handle 24 is pushedback' to its neutral position to re-seat the-valve'member 39, thereby shutting off further release of the fluid from cylinder 21. When released the handle 24 then will. be. returned to its relative conditionshown irrFigs. 3 and 4 by the action of the spring92.
Asshown in Fig. 10 moving pump handle 24 inwardly will cause. rod.35 to move inwardly, carrying with it pivoted lever 38 which in turn willunseat valve member 39 Such movement relieves .the fluid. pressure. in brake mechanism 33, permittingthefluid to return therefrom to tank 2D.through.'tubes..29 .and 5 and releasing brake..33-.
Horizontal support Sincludes a seat 44 to support the. patient, andfis -shown. (Fig. 1) equipped witha bed-.panM, which may be supported. thereunderin. any'suitable manner. As shown herein. the. pan 4| issupported by a lever 42 which is..pivotally attached at one end to a cylinder 2% movable within the lifting cylinder 21, andis operated by. means of handles 43, which when. pulled .to .the left, as in Fig. 1, lift hook 44' from out .of. engagement with pin 42 on .lever42, allowing-lever 42 and pan 4| to be loweredand moved .laterally from under seat 4D.vv Onmoving handles 43 tothe right, the operation. .can..be--reversed, and-. pan 4| lifted up to and under seat 40.
The device is provided with two arms or hand rails-45 (Figs. 1 and2) 'each'of which is supportedin-abracket 45 pivoted at 46 to the support: S.- Said brackets are provided with arcuate slots :52'whereby both' of the arms may be moved up out-of'the'way and clamped by bolts 5|-when-the machine is not in use. When in 11560118101 the other of the arms is lowered to assist the-patient :in rising to a sitting position on-..the'seat 40 after which the other arm isloweredbehind thepatient and a back rest 41 isinserted in .theholes 41 provided in each arm 45 for-suchpurpose.
A.-handle 55 (Figs..landr2) is provided for pushing .orvpulling. the device along the floor as -desired,-'.and. it. .wi'll'...be .understood that the power-lifting. mechanism--P is preferably enclosed, as byxcasing 56.1.
InFigs;1l--13,1thebrackets45 for the support of the.;arms..45.-are provided with additional means indicated-Lat- I00 (see particularly Fig. 13).. whereby. saidtarms pivoted at |0| in this constructionxmay be 'angularly adjusted with respect-to the verticalaxis of the post |5 and clamped in adjusted position by the hand wheels I02. In Fig. 14,-:a modification is shown, wherein arcuateslotlflfl iseXtended to permit adjustment of arms45 to-support the patient in a fully recliningposition,- if. desired. Furthermore, and as shown, a head rest 48 maybe ad- I justably attached to the back rest 41 if desired.
A post 58 mounted on the post I5 and formed with a hook at its upper end may also be provided to support an enema bag or other devices needed for the care of an invalid.
The operation of the device is obvious from the foregoing description. The horizontal support S is raised or lowered at will by means of the pump handle 24 and it will be understood that the arms 45 may be adjustably positioned to support a patient in sitting position, in semi-reclining position, or in fully reclining position, as desired. Patients unable to sit upright or part way may thus be lifted and moved in a fullyreclining or horizontal position. It will also be understood that the horizontal support 8 may be replaced with any kind of suitable removable seat for otherwise supporting the patient, or with a seat which may be placed on a wheelchair for lifting the patient from a bed to a wheelchair or vice versa.
It will be seen, therefore, that I have provided a simple, safe, efficient, and easily operable device for lifting and moving patients, in, from or to their beds, and which will hold the patient in a sitting or semi-reclining position, as desired, and which will relieve nurses from one of their more burdensome tasks of lifting and moving patients.
