CHIMNEY-TOP.
PEOIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,398, dated July 18, 1882. Application filed May 13,1882. No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS 0. SMITH, acilizen' of the United-States,and a resident of Berlin, in the county of Green Lake and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable 1mprovementin Chimney-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention in perspective. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail of disk in perspective. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken just above the disk.
This invention has relation to draft-tops for chimneys; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement ofthe cross-shaped pipe having lateral downwardly-turned elbows and an upwardly-concave transverse disk located at the intersection of the elbows with the vertical main pipe, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the vertical main pipe, which extends upward from the end of the chimney. Openings 1) are made at each side of this pipe, and lateral elbows 0, having their outer ends, d, downwardly turned, are secured to the sides of the vertical pipe; or vertical upper andlower sections of pipe may be secured to the lateral elbows, in either case the open inner ends of the upper, lower, and lateral branches communicating with an inner central space, e. interior upwardly concave deflecting-disk, g,is arranged in the central space, 0, at the intersection of the elbows with the main pipe. Its edge is free, and it is secured in position by means of cars or strap-lugs h, which are secured to the pipe-wall. This disk is designed to prevent the wind from blowing down the On the upper end of the main pipe is attached a conical cap, 70, of greater diameter than said pipe and raised above its edge by means of strap-supports Z. This cap also serves to prevent the wind from blowing downward into the pipe. The heated air and products of combustion risethrough the vertical pipe, an d, assisted by the draft through the lateral elbows, escape freely through the opening under the cap.
Having described this invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The cross-shaped draft-top for chimneys, consisting of the vertical pipe having the raised cap 7c, the lateral downwardly-turned elbows c, intersecting the main vertical pipe at the central space, 0, and the upwardly-concave deflecting-disk g, transversely arranged in said central space, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have heteunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS C. SMITH.
