(Cl. 109-59)n 3 Claims.
My invention relates to insulated filing cabinets of the type including a case having lwalls forming one ormore compartments, eachcompartment having an end opening, usually atthe front of the cabinet, and a drawer for each compartment of. the case, each drawer being operatively mounted for movement into-and out of its compartment and each drawer including a closure front, and the ends of the compartmentforming walls around the end openings constituting jamb frames each including straight top, bottom, andside jamb frame memberseach jamb frame member including at least one groove having a bottom wall and tongue; side walls, and each drawer front'being bounded by straight top, bottom, and side tongue walls arranged for fitting in the grooves of its associated jamb frame and grooves arranged for fitting over one set of thegroove tongue walls of the jamb frame, and-each of the compartment forming; walls of the case and the drawer front having a composite construction including sheet metal shell walls ,containing. a wall of heat insulating, material.
In usual prior insulated filing, cabinets,v it has been customary to form sloping sidewalls for the grooves of the jamb framemembers at the ends of thewallsforming end openings for. the compartments, and it has also been considered to be substantially a necessity that the groove side tongue Wall at theinside of each jamb framemembershould include heat insulating material, in order to attain adequate protection of the contents of the drawer in each compartment, when closed ancl locked, against'the actionof heat and moreparticularly the heat-incident to the subjection of'theinsulated filing cabinet to direct contact with flames.
Such a jamb frame for the end opening of the drawer compartmentof aninsulated -filingcabinet including sloping side walls for-the groove of the jamb frame and heat insulating material included in the groove side tongue wall at the inside of each jamb frame membergives rise to a complicated and difficult assembly ofthe walls of the jamb frame-with the other walls ofthe compartment usually precluding spot weld assembly, and also necessitates a substantial thickness of the heat insulating material of each compartment-wall having a jamb frame member at its end, thereby requiring a substantial weight of heat insulating material in the insulated filing cabinet.
The objects of the present invention include the provision of an improved insulated filing cabinet construction for the above described type of insulated filing cabinet and in which the jamb frame members for each compartment end opening include sheet metal walls adapted for-spotweld assembly with sheet metal walls forming'a lining for the compartment.
Further objects of the present invention include:
ing entirely of plies of spot weld connected sheetmetal, without any heat insulation material in the inside tongue wall, thereby minimizingthe weight of heat insulating material in the insulated filing cabinet.
Further objects of the present invention include the provision of an improved insulated filing cabinet construction including the above de scribed improved jamb frame for the end opening of each compartment, and which is adequate to provide desired protection of the contents of the closed and locked drawer in each compartment, against specified action of heat.
The foregoing and other objects are attained by the insulated filing cabinet construction, improvements, members, parts, combinations, and subcombinations, which comprise the present invention, the nature of which is set forth in the following general statement, and preferred embodiment of which together with their mode of use are set forth by way of example in the following description, and which are particularly and distinctly pointed out and-set forth inthe appended-claims forming part hereof.
The natureof the improved insulated filing cabinet construction of the present invention may be stated in general terms as including a case having walls forming one or more compartments, each compartment having an end opening, and a drawer for each compartment, each drawer being operatively mounted for movement into and out of its compartment and each drawer including a closure front,- the ends of the compartment forming walls around=the end opening constituting a jamb frame formed by members each-including walls forming a groove-and the side walls of the groove constituting outer and inner tongue walls, and the drawer front being bounded by a set of tongue walls arranged for fitting in the grooves of the jamb frame and grooves arranged for fitting over the inner set of groove side tongue walls of the jamb frame.-
Each of the compartment forming walls of the case and the drawer front have a composite construction including sheet metal shell wallscon-V taining a wall of heat insulating material. The
gasses jamb frame members around the end opening of each compartment includes sheet metal walls forming the jamb grooves, each with a transverse rectangular cross section, and each inner tongue wall forming the inner side of the groove in each jamb frame member has a reversely folded outer border including spaced plies forming a rearwardly opening deep groove. The compartment forming walls include sheet metal lining walls each having a front border band which fits in the deep groove between the spaced plies of the reversely folded outer border of one of the jamb frame members, and these spaced plies have spot weld connections with the front border bands of sheet metal compartment lining walls fitting therebetween.
By way of example, preferred embodiments of the insulated filing cabinet construction of the present improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in h Figure 1 is a view of afour drawer vertical insulated filing cabinet including the present improvements, the composite drawer compartment forming case being shown in vertical section, the top. drawer being shown in side elevation partially withdrawn from its compartment, the second drawer from the top being shown in vertical section and in its closed position in its compartment, and the two lower drawers being shown partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section in the closed positions in their compartments;

The ends of the compartment forming walls around the end opening of each compartment constitute an improved jamb frame .including straight top, bottom, and side jamb frame members each including walls forming a rectangular groove 50, the straight sides of each groove 50 being formed by an outer tongue wall indicated generally by H or 52 and an inner tongue wall indicated generally by 53. For the top compartment I2 there is a jamb frame member having a groove 50 in the front end ofv the composite top-wall I'I-4, and in the front end of the composite side wall II-2, and in the front end of the-composite side wall II-3, and in the front end of the upper composite partition wall II-6. A set of outer tongue walls include a tongue wall in the top composite wall I I-4, and in each of the side walls I I-2 and II-3, and a tongue wall 52in the top composite partition wall lI-Ii. A set of inner tongue walls 53 include a tongue wall 53 in the top composite wall II-4 in each of the side composite walls II-2 and II-3. and in the top partition wall II-Ii.
The groove side. tongue wall 52 in the front end of the. top partition wall II-B is common to thebottomgroove 5B of the top compartment I2 and to the top groove 50 for the compartment I2..which is the second from the top. Similarly, in the middle partition wall II-6 there is a common groove side tongue wall 52 at its front end which is a side wall for the bottom groove 50 for-the compartment I2 second from the top, and for the top groove 50 of the next lower compartment I2, that is the second from the bottom. The bottom partition wall II-6 has a similar common groove side tongue wall for the bottom groove 50' of the compartment I2 second from the bottom and for the top groove 50 of the bottom compartment I2.
The case bottom wall II-5 has a'front end including a bottom jamb frame member having a groove 50 with an outer groove side tongue wall 5 I and an inner groove side wall 53.
All of the compartments include jamb frame side members having grooves 50 formed in the front'ends of the case side walls II-2 and II-3.
All of the jamb frame members formed in the front ends of the case top wall II-4, the case side walls II-2 and II-3, and the case bottom wall II-5 have the same composite construction. Describing in detail for example the composite jamb frame member formed in the front end of the case side wall I I-3 and shown in the lower right hand corner of Fig. 3, this side composite jamb frame member includes a sheet metal outer shell formed as a continuation of the outer sheet metal shell wall 31 'of the case side wall I I-3 and including a front border portion 31-I of the side wall 31, a flat parall'el edged front band portion 31-2 bent inwardly towards the case side wall -I.I-2 at right angles to the front border portion 31-I, a flat parallel edged groove side wall portion 31-3 bent rearwardly towards the case back wall II-I at right angles to the front band portion 31-2, a parallel edged groove bottom wall portion 31-4 bent inwardly at right angles to the groove side wall portion 31-3, and a forwardly extending groove side wall portion 31-5 bent forwardly at right angles to the groove bottom wall portion 31-4, and a rearwardly extending parallel edged terminal border portion 31-5 reversely folded from the front edge of the groove side wall 1 portion 31-5 and laterally spaced therefrom, the groove side wall portion 31-5 and the reversely folded terminal border portion 31-6 thus constituting spaced plies forming a rearwardly opening groove having a substantial depth. 1
The front border portion 38-I of the sheet metal shell wall of the composite case side wall II-3 extends into the groove between the inner groove side .wall 31-5 and the reversely folded terminal border portion 31-6, :and 'the three plies of sheet metal 31-5, 38-I and 31-6 abut each other and have spot weld connections with each other, and form the multi-ply sheet metal tongue wall 53 for the lamb frame member formed in the front end of the composite case side wall II-3.
The insulating wall 39 of the composite case side wall I I-3 includes a front end portion 39-I extending into and filling the rearwardly opening channel formed between the sheet metal shell wall border portion 31-I, front band portion 31-2, and groove side wall portion 31-3, thus forming a composite outer groove'side tongue wall 5| for the groove 50 0f the jamb frame side member in the front end of the case side wall In the front end of each of the partition walls II-B a composite double grooved jamb frame member is formed having a construction similar to the single grooved jamb frame member formed in the front ends of each of the case top, side, and bottom walls. As previously described, in the front end of each of the partition walls II-G the jamb frame member includes parallel grooves 50 with a composite central common groove side tongue wall 52 and a multi-ply sheet metal tongue Wall 53 for each groove.
As shown for example in the jamb frame member formed in the front end of the case side wall I I-3, in Fig. 3, the width of the groove 50 is substantially one-half the thickness of the insulatingwall 39, the depthof the multi-ply sheet metal tongue wall 53 is. substantially equal to the 'width of the groove 50, and the depth of the groove tongue wall 5| is substantially twice the width of the groove 50.
In each composite drawer front I6 the outer sheet metal shell I1 is filled with a wall of in-' sulating material 54, embedding metal wire mesh reinforcement 55, and each drawer front outer sheet metal shell I1 includes in addition to the front wall I1-I, aback wall I1- -2, and at the top, bottom, and each side of the shell I1, sheet metal walls form a straight jamb member having a rectangular cross section. and including an outer composite tongue 56 at the outside of an tangular plug portion IG-I extends rearwardly from the plane of the rear faces of the composite tongues 56a distance which is substantially twice the depth of the tongues 56 from the front face of the drawer front, the plug portion IG-I being slightly smaller than the rectangular opening bounded by the jamb frame terminal border portions 31-6 into which the plug portion I1-2 extends when the drawer is closed.
By the foregoing described improved construction of the composite compartment forming walls of the improved case II, with their composite jamb members at their front ends, the advantages and economies of spot welding are attained in the spot weld connectionsof the three plies of the jamb groove sheet metal groove, side tongue walls 53, and a minimum thickness of insulating wall is attained in each of the composite compartment forming walls, since no insulating material is included in the inner groove tongue walls 53.
Contrary to what might be expected of the improved insulated filing cabinet Ill, when the drawers it are closed in their compartments [2 and are locked by at least the individual drawer locks, and when the improved insulated filing cabinet is is subject to the action of heat or impact or both, the distortions of the walls of the jamb frame members of the case I] and of the tongue and groove forming walls of the drawer fronts it, during the usual test period for an insulated filing cabinet, are such as to block the passage of flame or hot gases into the compartment E2 of the cabinet containing the drawer bodies 55 and their contents.
Fig. 6 showsthe relative arrangements of the jamb frame member of the top wall ll-4 of the insulated filing cabinet if) when the top drawer is closed and locked and the cabinet It is not being subject to the action of heat or impact or both. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 showing one type of characteristic distortions of the walls of the jamb frame member of the case top wall I 2-4 and of the interfitting tongue of the top drawer l3, and Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7 showing another type of characteristic distortions of these parts after the improved filing cabinet it has been subject to the action of heat or impact or both, for a specified period of time and at a specified temperature. In each of Figs. 7 and 8 it may be seen that despite the distortions of the jamb frame members and the interfitting parts of the drawer front [6, there are no direct passages for hot gases or flames between the jamb frame and the door. In particular it should be noted that there is no substantial distortion of the inner groove side multiply tongue wall 53.
