This invention relates to improvements in holders for use in grinding hypodermic needles.
The object of the invention is to provide a holder which is designed to facilitate the free axial rotation of a hypodermic needle during the sharpening operation so the beveled end thereof will come to rest upon the surface of the grinding wheel or other abrasive cutter.
Other objects and advantages, more or less ancillary to the foregoing, and the manner in which all the various objects are realized will appear in the following description, which, considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, sets forth the preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the improved needle holder showing a hypodermic needle in place thereon; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of of the forward end thereof.
Referring first to Fig. 1, the holder comprises a rod 10, embodying a conical-frustum end ll, constituting a stub arbor, a diametrically reduced portion l2 adjacent thereto, an enlarged body section l3 defining a shoulder l4 and an annular groove 15 in spaced relation with the shoulder hi for the reception of a split ring IS. The portion of the rod intermediate the shoulder 14 and ring I6 is provided with a sleeve l'l formed with liberal end and diametric clearance to accommodate the free rotative movement of the sleeve upon the rod.
In operation, the stub arbor on the holder is inserted in the hypodermic needle and pressed inwardly and/or twisted to assure the frictional engagement of the parts. The sleeve I1 is then gripped between the thumb and forefinger of the operator and the assembly then tilted at an angle that will bring the beveled end of the needle into the parallel relation with the face of the grinding wheel or cutting surface of the stone. While in this position, the assembly is slowly advanced towards the cutter until the needle touches the abrasive cutter whereupon the needle and holder will rotate together about their medial axis until the inclined face of the needle comes to rest in seated relation with the grinding wheel or stone. After this occurs, the operator may readjust the position of the needle holder to obtain the angle of the formerly ground bevel or, if desired, tilt the holder to attain a longer or shorter bevel as desired.
After the operator has grasped the sleeve l'l between the thumb and finger for advancing the needle towards the abrasive body in order to obtain proper angular position of the needle with respect to the abrasive body, the operators thumb and finger are then moved from the sleeve ll onto the body portion l3 to maintain the rod 6 and needle in the determined angular position relative to the abrasive body. The rod 10 of the holder is of sufiicient length so that during the time that the thumb and finger of the operators hand engages either the sleeve I! or the body portion [3, the portion of the rod l0 extending beyond the sleeve in the direction opposite to the arbor will engage or rest on the portion of the operators hand between the finger and thumb. Thus, the extending portion of the rod is adapted to engage the operators hand between the thumb and finger when the thumb and finger are in a gripping engagement with either the sleeve I! or the body portion 13, so that the device is held like a pencil.
Although the foregoing description is necessarily of a detailed character, in order that the invention may be completely set forth, it is to be understood that the specific terminology is not intended to be restrictive or confining, and that various rearrangements of parts and modifications of detail may be resorted to without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as herein claimed.
I claim:
A holder engageable by an operators hand for supporting a hypodermic needle during a sharpening operation on an abrasive body, comprising a rod having a frusto-conical stub arbor on one end for frictionally holding the needle, an enlarged body portion on the rod adjacent said arbor, a sleeve adjacent said body portion and rotatable on said rod, said body portion and sleeve each being of suificient length for engagement by the thumb and a finger of the operators hand, a portion of said rod extending beyond said sleeve in a direction opposed to said arbor and being of sufficient length to engage the hand of the operator between the finger and thumb when the thumb and finger engage either said body portion or sleeve, said body portion and said sleeve being of substantially the same diameter to facilitate the ready movement of the thumb and finger from said sleeve to said body portion during the sharpening operation, means for restraining movement of said sleeve longitudinally of the rod whereby said sleeve is adapted to be engaged by the thumb and finger to enable the rod to rotate for properly positioning the face of the hypodermic needle upon the abrasive body and whereby said rod is adapted to be retained in said position upon the subsequent gripping of said body portion by the thumb and finger.
