DEVICE FOR TURN I'NG SHAFTlNG.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 261,344, datedJ'uly 18, 1882.
Application filed November 9, 1881. v(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. HAWES, of Great Falls, in the county of Straiford and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improved Dressing-Head for Finishing and Smoothing Shaftin'g; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specidetached.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
In the construction of this instrument I enlploy a stationary ring-disk, A, through the open center of whichthe shaft or tube to be finished round and smoothed is to pass, the said disk being secured to a suitable holding. yoke or frame andthe shaft to be revolved therein and fed along through it. This disk for finishing shafts varying in sizesay from threefourths of an inch to fourinches in diametermay be about ten inches in diameter, the central aperture thereof being of sufficient size to admit the largest shafting to be finished by the instrument. One side of the disk has two inwardly-projectin g flanges, a b, one at the outer and the other at the inner periphery thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, both projecting sufficiently from the face of the disk to admit the, operative parts of the instrument (hereinafter set forth) therein. The flange side of the disk is or may be covered with another ring-disk or face-plate, B, thus inclosing the parts located between the flanges. This plate or disk is secured to the flanged disk by screws 00, so that it may be readily removed. In the flanges a I) mortises or guideways are formed for the reception of radial bearing-slides (10, arranged at suitable and preferably uniform intervals around the circle, as shown, the inner ends of which, when adjusted to an exact circle of the required diameter, serve unitedly as a bearing suit different diameters of shafts, I form lateral heads or projections d d on their outer ends, through which radial screws E E pass and thence screw into the outer flange, a, of the disk A, substantially as represented. The heads f f of these set-screws bear against the outer surfaces of the slide-heads d d, and jamnuts g g on the screws are, tightened against the inner surfaces of these heads 11 d when the slides are properly adjusted for any diameter of shaft. Also, in a suitable way or ways of the disk A a smoothing-cutter, G, is located, so as to be similarly adjusted in a radial position and direction out and in to suit the size of shaft to be finished. This cutter is or may be adjusted by a set-screw, H, .in the same manner as the bearing-slides, between two of which it is located. It is to be understood that this smoothing-cutter is situated an inch or two behind a suitable instrument for first reducing the shaft to a uniform size, and that its action on the shaft follows the reducing action and by the same movement of the shaft, though this is not essential. For perfect work this smoothing-cutter is also to precede the position of the bearing-slides G O, which therefore hold the shaft always where it is finished, so that their holding thereof is always as accurate as possible. Hence I make the guideway of the cutter just forward of those of the bearing-slides in the holding-disks, as shown or indicated in Figs. land 2. In many cases,
however, I find it desirable and generally preferable to adapt the cutter to be inserted in one of the slideways and constructed to be adjusted in the same way. The slide 0, which is removed to permit the insertion of the cutter, is not essential to a proper centering of the shaft, there being enough left for that purpose. This constructionis especially shown in Fig. 3. To enable this to be effected the cutter and slides have at their inner ends the form and relation concentric guide-flanges, (62), the bearing-slides O O, and cutter G, guided in the two flanges, and the adj listing-screws E E H, screwing into the outer flange, a, for adjusting the said slides and cutter, substantially as and for the pur- I pose herein specified.
The foregoing specification signed by me 20 this 24th day of June, 1881.
J. M. HAWES.
