SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,216, dated July 18, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES P. FEST, of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mounting Mother-of-Pearl and Similar Substances on Metal; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, making part ofthis specification.

This invention is in the nature of an improvement in jewelry of pearl or analogous substances; and the invention consists of a brooch, button, or other article of ornament or jewelry with a metal back affixed thereto by means of an irregular-shaped cavity in said ornamental face-plate, whereby the back is not only secured to said ornamental plate, but it is at the same time prevented from turning thereon, as is more particularly described and shown hereinafter.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a view of under side of face-plate with irregular-shaped opening; Fig. 2, crosssection of same; Fig. 3, cross-section with metallic filling and back plate. Fig. 4 is a view of under side of ornamental face-plate with two cavities formed therein; Fig.5, crosssection showing application of cones to faceplate; Fig. 6, cross-section showing the back plate fixed to under side of face-plate when two cavities are employed for that purpose.

This invention is in the nature of an improvement on that which was patented to me in Letters Patent No. 223,441 on the 13th day of January, 1880. In the invention so patented a single circular cavity was formed in the under side of the ornamental face-plate, into which cavity a metal cone was inserted, and by means of solder a metal back or button was fastened to the inserted metal cone. It is found, however, in practice that while the back is in this way securely attached, yet the cone will turn in its seat in the face-plate and the back will get awry.

Now, to obviate this I form inthe under side of my ornamental face-plate A an irregularshaped cavity, a, into which cavity is fitted a corresponding piece of metal, I), to which piece of metal, by means of solder, a back or button, B, is secured'by the application of heat to the back or button. The cavity a in the back of the face-plate A being of irregular form, it is obvious that the metal I) fitted therein cannot render or turn. Hence the back B will remain fixed and not get awry. This irregular cavity is formed, when the pearl or other ornamental face-plate is inlaid, by cutting through the face-plate an opening corresponding in shape and size with the material and design with which the plate is to be inlaid, the inlaid material, 0, being thinner than the face-plate A. When it is inserted in said plate a space is left unfilled by it, which unfilled space is the cavity a, so that the form of this cavity may be that of a star, or a horse, or a flower, it in each instance corresponding in shape with the inlaying figure 0. a a

The means just described of forming the irregular-shaped cavity a in the face-plate A applies particularly to such face-plates as are inlaid; but to such faceplates as are-not inlaid, instead of the irregular-shaped cavity a, I form two or more cavities, d, in the under side of the face-plate A and insert and secure in these cavities (1 metal cones c. To these cones the back plate, B, is soldered, as before described.

The cavities d and cones c prevent the back from twisting or getting out of place in substantially the same manner as does the irregular cavity a.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An ornamental face-plate for jewelry, &c., provided with an irregular-shaped cavity, a, in combination with a metal filling, b, in said cavity and a metal back or button, B, as and for the purpose described.

2. In an ornamental face-plate for jewelry, &c., an inlaid substance, 0, of less thickness than the substance of the face-plate A,whereby a cavity, a, is produced, as and for the pur pose described.

3. In an ornamental face-plate for jewelry, &c., two or more cavities, (1, formed in the under surface of said face-plate A, in combination with metal fillings and a metal back or button, B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
