Description
(.No Model.)
W. A. EDDY.
, THILL- GOUPLING. No. 261,144. 'Patented July 18, (1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VVALTON A. EDDY,- OF RANDOLPH, NEW YORK.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming para of Letters Patent No. 261,144, dated July 18,1882.
Application led May 17, lSQ. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, VALTON A. EDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Randolph, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anti-Rattlers for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following t0 be a full, clear, and `ezract description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. y
My device relates to anti-rattiing thill-coup lings for vehicles; and it consists in certain, details of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth in the specification and claim, and pointed out in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a section of my device; Figs. 2, 3, and 4, detail viewsof the chucks and springs.
.Referring more particularly to the drawings, A represents the shaft-iron, secured to the ears ofthe clip H by the ordinary bolt,p. Between the curved end ot' the shaft-iron and the clip I insert metal or rubber chucks G D. The npper one, O, has acurved or beveled front face, b, and straight back face, the front face being beveled or curved to conform to the round end of the shaft-iron. The lower chuck, D, has both faces beveled, so as to permit the chuck t0 come up closely to the shaft-iron and sides of the clip, and at the same time leave a space between the chucks, as shown in Fig. 1. This chuck is chambered out on its under side, as shown atf, Fig. 3, for the reception of a rubber washer, E, or spring K. Each chuck is perforated for the reception of a. curved bolt7 B,
which passes through the chuck and is curved around the end of the shaft-iron so as to allow play of the iron and allow the lower chuck to come snugly i-nto position, which would not be the case if the bolt were straight. The part ofthe bolt near the head is squared off so as to tit the square recess a in chuck O, and thus prevent the bolt from turning. The object ot' the recess f in chuck I) is to provide a tirm seat for the washer E, or spring K, which may bc used instead of washer E. When the several parts are placed in position, as shown in Fig. l, the washer E or spring K being held in the cup-shaped seatf by the metallic washer F and nut G, the shaft-iron and the several parts are held tightly and securely in place, and all rattling prevented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
\In a th'ill-coupling, the combination of the shaft-iron and clip with the chucks C D, the upperone being beveled on one side and rectangular on the other side, the lower one being beveled on both sides and provided with a cupshaped recess on its lower side for the reception of a rubber washer or spring, the two chucks being held and adjusted by a curved bolt, B, substantiallyv as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTON A. EDDY.
