1 Claim. 1
This invention relates generally to lthe class of stoves and furnaces and is directed to improvel ments in broilers designed to use charcoal as the heating source.
A principal` object of the present invention is to provide a broiler for cooking steaks, chops or meat in other forms or other foodstuffs, by the use of charcoal, wherein a novel arrangement is provided for supporting the foodstuff to be cooked upon the door structure whereby when the door is moved to closedposton the foodstuff will be automatically shifted into the cooking chamber in position over the burning fuel bed.
, vAnother object of the invention is to provide a broiler of the character stated wherein the door structure is so constructed that when it is moved to opened position to withdraw the cooked food, the oven or cooking chamber will be closed automatically to prevent unnecessary loss of dissipation of the heat.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a broiler of the character stated with novel means for supporting the burning fuel in a manner whereby the fuel may be replenished from time to time as necessary without losing heat from the cooking chamber.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a broiler of the character stated which is designed so that it can be made in a small size for convenient transportation.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification, with the understanding, however that the invention is notv to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described since obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a broiler structure constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 with the door structure in closed position.
Figure 4 is a sectional View corresponding to Figure 8 but showing the door structure in open position.
Figure is a detail section taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing the numeral III generally designates aV rectangular housing forming the cooking or broiling chamber, such housing comprising atop wall II, a back wall I2 and side walls I3.' The side walls I3 are, as shown in Figure l, of materially greater length than the back wall wherebyto provide supporting legs Isa atlthe sides ofthe structure. y
Disposed transversely of the lower part of the housing in the plane of the bottom edges ofthe side walls are horizontal and spaced 'platesv I4, each of which is relatively narrow and has a down turned portion Illa which is disposed against the inner side of a side wall leg forming portion I3a as shown in Figure 1. One of the panels I4 has its forward edge flush with the forward edges of the side walls I3 as shownin Figures 2 and 4 while the other plates Mare spaced a substantial distance rearwardly whereby are provided the two vent spaces Iand I6.
The area defined by the front edges of the top wall I I, side walls I3 andthe forward one of theY plates I4 constitutes the door opening which is designated I1. At one side of this door opening is disposed the vertical hinge pin I8 which passes through suitable openings in the top wall II and the forward plates I4. This hinge pin I8 maintains in proper swinging position in the opening I'I the door unit which is generally designated I9.
The door unit I9 comprises the two walls 20 and 2| joined together in right angular relation as is clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4 and a bottom sector plate 22 which is formed integrally with the bottom edges of the panels 20 and 2I and constitutes the grill plate upon which is placed food to be cooked in the broiler. At the top of the door unit in the angle between the walls 20 and 2l a corner web 23 is formed and the pivot pin I8 passes through this web and through the sector plate 22 to pivotally maintain the door unit in position.
The wall 20 of the door unit constitutes the main door portion for closing the opening Il when the broiler is in use while the wall 2| constitutes an auxiliary door which closes the opening I 1 when the door unit is swung outwardly to uncover the sector plate 22.
The sector plate 22 is provided with a plurality of openings 22 to facilitate the upward fiow of heat from the fuel supporting grate which is generally designated 24 and which is disposed beneath the opening I5` To facilitate the swinging of the door unit I9, the door wall 20 carries a knob or suitable type of handle 25 whereby the unit can be swung 3 in and out as desired. It will also be noted that the grill sector plate 22 rests on and has sliding contact with the top surfaces of the bottom wall panels I4 whereby strain upon the pivot pin I8 is effectively relieved.
The fuel carrying grate 24 is slidably supported below the bottom wall panels I4 by means of the spaced parallel guide strips 2B which are secured to the undersides of the plates I4 and extend romfront to rear of the housing and the fuel grate -is v'in `the form of a drawer or receptacle having a bottom wall 21 provided with slots or openings 28 and side walls 29 together with front and back walls 30 and 3l -respectively.
As shown the side walls are provided with laterally extending flanges 32 .which slidably engage upon the spaced guides or tracks 26 to facilitate the sliding of the grate inwardly land outwardly.
In addition .to the handle 33 `,carried .by the lfiront wall of the grate to Vfacilitate Agrasping the Same to open and close it, there .is lprovided upon the 4underside of the rear bottom `wall portionIA 'a stop strip 34 which limits .the .inward `movement of the drawer.
To facilitate the convenient movement or transportation of :the broiler unit the top wall ris `,provided vwith upstanding .ears .35 between which is pivotallyengaged a `carrying handle or bale 36.
From the foregoing :it will be readily seen that ,there is provided in the .present invention a novel .type of ycharcoal broiler or cooking stove which .willeffectively conserve the heat due to the novel double .walled door .construction and which may h e manufactured of suitable light weight sheet metal yand is adapted to Vbe easily `and quickly moved .or 4transportedfrom place to place.
,A portable broiling stove, comprising a .substantially rectangular housing having `its front bottom sides open and its side walls de- 4 pending below the front and rear sides lto space the open bottom side above a supporting sur--l face, a pair of spaced. relatively narrow, plates extending transversely of the open bottom side of said housing, leg forming portions downturned from the opposite ends of said plates and contacting the inner sides of the lower portions of said side walls of the housing, a pair of spaced guide elements supported on the lower sides of :said platesy and extending rearwardly lfrom the 'front side of the housing, va fuel drawer, constituting a charcoal burning grate, slidably sup- -ported by said guide elements and having a perforated bottom and an open top, a door hinged at one side of the open front of said housing, asentar-shaped' broilng plate supported from the innerside ofthe lower edge of said door and having a plurality of slotted openings therein, anda vertical wall rising from the inner of the radial edges of said plate and connecting with vvthe vertical .edge `.of said door adjacent .the hingedeconnections thereof with .the housing, said l.vertical .wall acting to close the vopeniront Aof said housing when said door is moved to fully opened position.
