Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEO. E. SELLERS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO MILES GREENWOOD.
RIGHT AND LEFT DOOR-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 2,610, dated May 7, 1842.
To all whom may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE EscoL SELLERS, of the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Knobbed Latch or Bolt, which I denominate the Revertive or Right and Left Handed Door-Latch; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof.
My improved latch, or bolt is the same,
`in the general manner of its operation, with the ordinary spring bolt; that is to say, it is retracted by turning' a knobbed handle, and, in closing the door upon which it is placed, it is forced back by the beveled part of its projecting end being brought into contact with a catch, or piece of metal on the door post; but, in stead of being thrown out by a spring, it is forced forward by a weight..
I am aware that the mere forcing of a bolt out by means of a weight instead of by a spring, is not new, but I have so arranged the weight, and the other parts of the instrument, as that it will operate equally well either as a right or a left handed latch.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l, represents the respective parts of the latch, as seen when the back plate, or cover, is removed from the box, or case. A, A, is the bolt which, as well as the parts generally, is made of cast-iron, and has the two projecting portions, B and C, cast in one piece with it. Against the piece B, aI weight D, operates; this weight turns upon a fulcrum pin at E, which is cast with the box. It
will be evident from an inspection of the drawing, that whichever edge of the boX is turned uppermost, the action of the weight upon the bolt will be the same. F, is a turnbuckle, or cam piece, through which the shaft of the knobs passes, in the usual way; this turnbuckle operates upon the piece C, at the rear end of the bolt. The cap plate is secured tothe box by a single screw passing thro-ugh it near its middle, and tapped into the box at G. The opening a, a, through the weight is to enable it to move up and down over the shank of the screw. The bolt A, has a slot, or opening through it, extending nearly from end to end of that part of it which is within the box, to enable it to pass back and forth over the fulcrum pin E, over the screw at G, and over the shank of the turnbuclle, or cam, F.
Fig. 2, is an edge view of the latch, supposing the side H, of the rim of the box to be removed. I, is the knob of a sliding catch which may pass behind the offset b, (Fig. 1,) in the bolt, and prevent its being turned back by the handle.
Having thus fully described the nature of my improved revertive latch, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The manner in which I have formed and arranged the weight, and combined it with the other parts, by means of which the bolt is forced out, as set forth; that is to say, a weight the operation of which is the same in either of the two directions in which the latch may be allixed to a door.
GEO. ESCOL SELLERS,
