'Itis an object of myinvention to provide an automatic chuck mechanism which may be actuated by a single lever to either grip a workpiece within its jaws or eject the workpiece aiterwork has been performed thereon.
The invention will be fully apparent from the following detailed disclosure and the appended claims when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which: I

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference numeral 2 indicates the base of a lapping machine of the type shown in the patent to Kutzler, No. 2,391,983, dated January 1, 1946. Base 2 has an upwardly extending bearing support 4 which receives the ball bearings 6. Chuck body 8 is rotatably mounted in the bearings 6 and has a sheave l8 attached to the lower part thereof which is rotated by means of belt l2. The chuck body 8 has an axial opening I l therethrough for receiving a hollow sleeve l6 which has a shoulder H3 at its upper end. Slidably received in the opening in the sleeve I6 is a spindle having its upper end attached to a pad 22. The spindle 28 passes downwardly through the base 2 and a bearing 24 with its lower end being threaded into a cap 26. A cup member 28 is threaded to the outside of cap 26. Looking nuts 38 and 32 are provided for locking the cap 26 and cup member 28 in position. A spring 34 surrounds the cap 26 and spindle 26 with one end bearing against the bearing 24 and the other end being received in the cup member 28. The lower end of the cap 26 is bifurcated at 36. An operating lever 38 is pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on a pin 40 which is supported on a bracket 42 attached to the machine frame. One end of lever 38 extends between the bifurcations 36 and is pivotally connected to cap of my device;

26 by means of a pin 44 which is supported in the bifurcations 36 and passes through an elongated hole d6 in the end of lever 38. The other end of lever 38 extends into position to be operated by the operator or, if desired, suitable power means may be provided.
A spring 48 surrounds the sleeve l6 with its lower end resting on a shoulder 50 in the chuck body and its upper end bearing against a washer 52. A bearing 54 also surrounds the sleeve l6 upper half above the washer '52. The washer 52and ing 54' areheld in spaced apart relationship'by' means of three bell-crank levers 56 which are pivotally mounted in openings 58' in the chuck body. Upward movement of bearing; 54 is'limited by a shoulder 59in the chuck body 8;;- As best shown in Figures 3 and 4,"-each of the levers 56 has a substantially horizontal arm 68 which extends between the washer 52 and bearing 54. The operation of 'the' device' is as followsz, The pad22 is raisedbyapplying pressure to the outer end of the lever 38, this pressure cornpressing the spring 34. At the same time, spring 48 expands, thus rotating bell-crank levers 56 counterclockwise about their axes to move the jaws 66 radially outward. The die D to be lapped is then placed on the pad 22 by feed mechanism (not shown) or manually with the pad 22 in its raised position as shown in Figure 4. Pressure on the outer end of lever 38 is then released, enabling the spring 34 to move the spindle 28 and pad 22 downwardly to the position shown in Figure 3. This downward movement causes the shoulder is on the sleeve [4 to force the bearing 54 and the arms 68 of levers 56 downwardly against the pressure of the spring 48, thus com= pressing the spring 46. Downward movement of the arms 68 also causes the levers 56 to pivot about their axes, thus moving the jaws 66 inwardly with the upper portion 18 thereof firmly gripping the die D.
After the lapping operation is completed, pressure is again applied to the outer end of lever 38 to move the pad 22 upwardly, thus permitting the spring 26 to move the jaws 66 radially outwardly. As upward movement of the pad 22 continues, the die D is ejected from the chuck which in then ready to receive another die.
While one embodiment of my invention has been shown and described, it will be apparent that other adaptations and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. An automatic chuck comprising a chuck body having an axial bore therein, a pad disposed for axial movement within said axial bore, a plurality of jaws mounted for radial movement on said chuck body around said pad, a spindle at tached to and extending downwardly from said pad through said bore, an elongated bushing sura plurality of Jaws mounted for radial movement on said chuck body around said pad, aplurality of bell cranks pivoted insaid chuck body one beneath each of. said. 3aws, each of said bell cranks having aopairvoi arms, one arm. of each bell crank :being connectedto its associatedjaw, the other-arm oi? each of said bell cranks extending inwardly, .a spindle attached to said pad and extending downwardly through said bore, arbushing surrounding the upper portion of said spindle beneath said pad, a bearing surrounding said bushing above saidinwardlyextending bell crank arms, a spring surrounding said bushing beneath said inwardly extending bell crank armsand bearing thereagainst .to urge said jaws outwardly away from said.pad,. lowering of said spindle moving said-jaws inwardly-against the action of said spring, and operating means for raising and lowering said spindla.
3. An automatic chuck comprising a chuck body having an axial bore therein, a paddisposed for axial movement within said axial bore, a plurality of jawsmountediorradial movement on said chuck body around said pad, a plurality of bell cranks pivoted in said-chuck body one beneath each of said Jawa each of said'beli cranks having a pair of arms, one arm of each bell crank being connected to its associated jaw, the other arm of each of said bell cranks extending inwardly, a spindle attached to said pad and extending downwardly through said bore, a sleeve surrounding the upper portion of said spindle beneath aid 9 a bearing surrounding said bushing above said inwardly extending bell crank arms, a washersurrounding said spindle below the inwardly extending bell crank arms, a spring surrounding said bushing beneath said washer with one end bearing againstsaid chuckbody and theother endfbearingagainstsaid bell crank.
