This invention relates to a net and to a method .o f making and finishing it. It has for one object to provide'a tennis net in which a tape or fabric band is'placed along one edge of the netand encloses the upper edge.
It has for another object to provide aV method for making and nishing the edge of sucha net. A still further object is to provide a method of finishing and reinforcing one edge of a net without damaging or weakening the cords or threads ofwhich the net is made. o l Y Another object is to provide a net V reinforced and finished along one edge to providemeansffor receiving a supporting rope, or, cord'without damaging the threads or cords of 'which the net i'smade. Y
Other objects will appear from timetolftime in the course of the specification The invention is illustrat'edvmoreor less diag grammatically in the accompanying drawing wherein: l Figure 1 is a plan view of a portionof one'form of the net with parts brokenfawayandVv parts omitted.
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on'anenlarged scale at line 2-2 of Figure 1. i
Figure 3 is a plan vView of one' portion ofthe finishing or edging member. Y y l Figure 4 is a side elevation'illustrating the net when partially nished. i' I j 1 Like parts are indicated by like numbers throughout the specification and drawings." o
In the particular form here shown, the net is formed of cords I, I which are knotted vor joined together as at 2, 2. When the net is to be finished for example, when a portion of net is todbe made into a tennis net or other game net,. a piece of suitable size 'is prepared or cut from a vlarger piece. When this is done, free ends 3 of the fcords extend above the uppermost longitudinal cord 4. The upper edge of a game net, and frequently the lower edge, must be reinforced and mustbe provided with finishing means. It is advisable, when this is done, to provide means forsupporting the net from the finishing edge and fromthe '12 claims. (o1. 27s-'29) material of which the finishing edgeis formed.
Itis particularly advisable to accomplish ..t11is without stitching through `any1-ol' the v.veri.i a l threads below theuppermost horizontal thread, Such stitching, if present, is likelytodamage and weaken theV vertical cords. Hencethevpresent invention provides a convenient means forsecuring the finishing anded'ging ma'terial'tov a net without positioning any stitchesjbelow the" uppermost horizontal net 'member or cord. Theiedge finishing of the, present invention may be applied to any edge of a net-an end edge, a top edge or a bottom edge. In the particular form shown herewith, the finishing is applied to the top'edge but this does not indicate that the type of edge finishing shown herewith could not equally well f be applied to another edge. 5 is va member which forms a part of theedge finishing structure. It is provided' with a plu# rality. of integral tabs or extensions. kThis member isshown 'in planin Figure 3. v l
When the net is to benished, a net portion of suitable size is prepared anda membergsuch as that shown in Figure 3, is also prepared- The width of the tabs 6 is such that they may p ass freely through the meshes of the net, and pref'- erably,"they are nearly as wide as the width of a mesh although they might be narrower. In assembling the device, the parts are ar#- ranged as shown in Figure 4. Each tab 6 passes through one of the meshes 'I of the net. The tabs are then folded upwardly across the solid'portion 5 and they are stitched to the solid portion by one or'more rows of stitches 88. Froman inspection of the gures, it is clear that the stitches 8 are all above or outside of thefcord 4 and therefore the cords below or inside j of this edge cord are not stitched and there is no danger of damage from the perforation by the needle v or from the stitching. .i f After the net member has been constructed as shown in Figure 4, a finishing and loop holding section is added. The purpose of this is obvious and it affords a further reinforcement forfthe finished edge of the net. As shown in Figures 1 land 2, this reinforcing comprises an linner member 9 and an outer member Ill. The outer member I!! has inturned edges II which engage and retain in place the lower edges ofthe inner member 9. After the finishing strap formed of themembers 9 and I0 has been put in place, rows of stitches I2, I2 are put in place. These stitches pass through the member 5 and its integral tabs 6 but are all above the lower or outer 'cord 4 of the net proper. The outermost member I0 may, if desired, be provided with waterproong or preservative material, or both, and it mayv be of material stronger and stiffer than the'inner member or they may be formed of identical material. The invention is not limited to the 'use'of any particular materials in forming the finishing edge treatment.
` When the' net is complete, as shown in Figure 1, a rope or cable I3 is vordinarily inserted in the city, I4, formed withiny the' members 9. .and- II l).
'These members, as shown in Figure 2 in particular, form a cavity beyond the edge of the net and beyond the member 5, S, and this cavity is suitable for the insertion of a supporting cord or cable upon which the net may be hung or by means of which Vthe net may be held tight or otherwise held in suitable position if the finishing treatment is elsewhere than along the top ofthe net.
Although I have shown an operative form of my invention, it will be recognized'that many changes in the form, shape and arrangementof parts can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and my .showing is therefore to be taken as, in a sense, diagrammatic.
