{Sept 16, 1952 HA. THOMPSON BENDING MACHINE Filed June 27, 1950 INVENTOR. HAROLD A. THOMPSON ///\&///
A T TORNEY Patented Sept. 16, 1952 ,U NlTED- coir-rice I 6 l V 11 2510,666 11 T: '7 emme MACHINE Hinge-Thompson, S b r n o e- Application June 27, lssmjserisrud. 127114303 1"; I 2 Claims. (ctiefifsi-f Thisinventionrelates t6 bending machines and I is particularly adapted for bendlng ofiiat metal bars and the'like.
Theprimary object of the invention is 1 .0 Plfovide; a bar; bending machinemfor bending; fiat metal bars; of any thickness? by-interchanging simple removable bending anvils within; the bending machine without the use of tools.
With my new and improved bending machine, various thicknesses of fiat bars can be bent at a sharp angle, or they may be bent with more or less of a radius bend by simply changing the removable bending anvils.
The thicker the bar to be bent the less number of bending anvils that will be required to bend the same, or by adding or removing some of the anvils with a given thickness of bar a bend of varying radii may be made.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple bending tool that can be mounted on a bench having few parts, requiring no tools for adapting the same to the various thickness of fiat bars to be bent.
These and other incidental objects will be apparent in the drawings, specification and claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my new and improved bending machine in partial exploded view.
Figure 2 is a plan sectional view of Figure 1, taken on line 2-2.
Figure 3 is a plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side sectional view, taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a side sectional view, taken through Figure 3 on line 5-5 and on line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the bending anvil removed from the bending machine, the handle partially broken away.
Referring more specifically to the drawings:
The bending machine comprises a base I, having a working surface with a bearing opening 8 recessed therein, and two spaced-apart stationary vertically disposed angular shaped anvils 2 931d ,3 welded in place as at 4. I
5 indicates a rotary bending member. This member consists of a disk 6 and a semi-disk I and an intermediate bending anvil. The disk 6 is journaled in the bearing opening 8, while the bending anvil is in cooperative relation with the fixed anvils 2 and 3. The bending anvil is disposed with its apex in alignment with the axis of said disk 6, and said semi-disk 1 has a flat edge l6 that is coplanar with one surface of said anvil as best shown in Figure 6.

The purpose of this structure is to provide a space when the ring 13 is removed to place a flat bar to be bent between the anvils 2 and 3, or remove said bar after bending. By removing the ring l3 and aligning the fiat edge l5 of the semidisk I, the bar to be bent will pass down through the space ll between the segments l0 and I2 of tthe bearing 9 and past the flat edge I6 01 the semi-disk I, and past the side of the bending anvil 5 to the bases. When the ring I3 is replaced, it completes the raceway for receiving the semi-disk I and confines the bar between the two anvils 2 and 3.
It will be noted that the semi-disk I engages the segment l0 and pushes against the same in the bending operation, as shown in Figure 3.
The bearing surface of arcuate portion I4 is co-radial with the inner bearing surfaces of the bearing ring segments l0 and [2.
In the operation of my new and improved bending machine, the ring it is removed as illustrated in Figure 1. This permits the insertion of the bar 18 to be bent. Removable anvils IS jareQ- placed between the anvil 3 and the bar, the mamber or size of anvils placed therebetween will more or less determine the radius that the bar is to be bent.
The handle 20, which is fixedly secured to the bending element 5, is then moved in the direction of the arrow 2|, which will bend the bar l8 at 22 against the anvils IS. The amount that the bar will be bent can be determined by the scale markings 23. After said bar is bent, the ring 13 is removed as shown in Figure 1, permitting the bar to be removed from the bender.
One of the outstanding features of my bending machine, is the rigidity of structure as well as its simplicity, having the bending element mounted between two rigid bearings, one in the base plate and the upper bearing, which is mounted rigidly to the upper ends of the anvils. Further, this upper bearing can be dismantled, permitting the insertion and removal of the object to be bent, and the'provision of auxiliary bending anvils for forming the desired bends on the object to be bent.
These anvils are always handy, as they are supported by the vertically mounted angle 24, which is welded to the base I and the upstanding pin 25, which receives and holds the auxiliary anvils I! in place for easy access in the bending operation.
Although certain specific modifications of the invention have been shown and described, it is obvious that many modifications thereof are possible. The invention, therefore, is not to be restricted except in so far as is necessitated by the prior art and by the spirit of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A bending apparatus comprising a base having a horizontally disposed working surface with a bearing recessed therein, a pair of spaced angular anvils fixed to said base and extending upwardly from said working surface adjacent said bearing, a bending member including a disc journalled in said bearing and carrying a vertically disposed angular bending anvil in cooperative relation with said pair of anvils for bending a metal strip, and a handle extending from said bending member for pivoting said disc to swing said bending anvil relative to said pair of anvils, a semi-discfixed to the top of said bending anvil, said semi-disc having a diametrical edge that is faces of said segments forming bearing surfaces for said semi-disc, the bearing portion of said ring extending between said segments and having a bearing surface co-radial with said segment bearing surfaces.
