A bore 39 extends through the head 31 and projection 38. providing a hydraulic passageway to the interiorA of the cylinder 36. Within the, `cylinder 36v there is a piston standard construction, having reversely positioned leak-proof washers adjacent opposite ends; thereof, to which a piston rod 4| is attached ,which extends through the cylinder 36. Rigidly at- 4f! of essentially rotating said auger tube including a cylinder tached to the right-hand end of the cyliner 36,
as viewed in Fig. 3, is a head 42 which isprovided with a stufling box 43 which cooperates with the piston rod 4 At its right-hand end the piston rod 4| is provided with a ball bearing 44, the inner race of which is clamped to the piston rod 4|, the outer race of which is clamped to the head ring |33 and the base of the socket or drill chuck 34. This provides an important characteristic of my invention, in that it permits free rotation of the auger tube 32, its head ring |33 and the drill chuck 34 without requiring similar rotation of the piston rod 4| orthe piston 46. Itis particularly un desirable to rotate the piston 40 because this greatly shortens the life thereof.
Itis obvious that if hydraulic iiuidis delivered to the passageway 39 the piston 40, piston rod 4|, rotary auger tube 32 and chuck 34 will be fed to thel right or outwardly. During this feedingv movement .the interior surface of the rotating auger tube 32 is supported at the right-hand end by turning on the exterior of the head 42 which is preferably made of brass, bronze or the like. At its rear end the tube 32 is provided with a bearing guide ring 45 on its external surface which has sliding contact with the internal surface ofthe housing cylinder 24.
To provide for reverse or retracting movement of the drill chuck 34 and rotary tube 32 there is av pair offeed tubes 46 which extend from a fitting adjacent the rear end ofthe cylinder 24 between the cylinder 36 and the tube 32 and at their right-hand or forward ends communicate with a bore 41 formed in the head 42 and leading to the linterior of the cylinder 36. Hydraulic iluid delivered to feed tubes 46 will tend to force the piston 40, piston rod 4|, rotary auger tube 32 and chuck 34 rearwardly or to the left at a relatively high speed in view of the reduced effective cross-section of the cylinder 36 produced by the large diameter of the piston rod 4|.
Obviously those skilled in the art may make various changes in the details and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the-invention as dened by the claims hereto appended, and applicant therefore wishes not to be `restricted to the precise construction herein disclosed.
Having thus described and shown an embodiment of the invention, what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

operating ,pistonereciprocable within said feed Within said housing and surrounding said auger tube, bearing means supporting said cylinder within said .housing for rotary motion, means slidably interconnecting said cylinder and auger tube whereby the latter is driven rotationally by the former, gear means on said cylinder, a motor carried by said-housing, and a gear driven by said motor for driving said gear on said cylinder.

A drill including a housing adapted to be held in iixed position during operation of the drill, an auger tube mounted for both rotation and rectilinear axial feeding motion in reverse directions relative to said housing and telescoping thereinto, a drill chuck attached to said auger tube, a feed cylinder rigidly attached to said housing and positioned inside it, an operating lthereof, means for supporting and rotating said' auger tube including means forming a cylinderv within said housing and surrounding said auger tube, bearing means supporting said cylinder forming means within said housing for rotary motion, means slidably interconnecting said cylinder forming means and said auger tubewhereby the latter is driven rotationally by the former, and motor means for driving said cylinder forming means.

A drill including a housing adapted to be held in iixed position during operation of the drill, an auger tube mounted for both rotation and rectilinear axial'ieeding motion -in reverse directions relative to said housing and telescoping thereinto, a drill chuck attached'to said auger tube, a feed cylinder rigidly attached to said housing and positioned inside it, said auger tube being mounted to reciprocate radially outsideV said feed cylinder and radially inside said hous-l ing, an operating piston reciprocable within said feed cylinder, a piston rod attached to said piston adjacent one end of said piston rod, bearing means attaching the other end of said piston rod to said auger tube to impart rectilinear motion of said piston and piston rod to said auger tubewhile said auger tube is free to rotate relative to said piston and piston rod which are essentially non-rotary during operation Yof said drill, means for rotating said auger tube and drill chuck including means forming a cylinder within said housing and surrounding said auger tube, and means slidably interconnecting said cylinder forming means and auger tube whereby the latter is driven rotationally by the former.
