I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD L.=PERRY, E PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, ASSlGNOR fro HIMSELF AND HENRY s. WINANS, OF NEW YORK, n. Y. I
COVERING FOR TOP ROLLS OF SPINNING-MACHINES.
SPECIFIGATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 260,780, dated July 11, 1882.
Application filed July 27, 1861. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing atPaterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Ooverings for TopItolls of Spinning-Machines and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawingsis a perspective v view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a crosssection thereof.
The presentinvention has relation to coverings or cots for the draft-rolls of spinningmachines. Previous to my invention these coverings or cots were usually made of the same internal diameter as the diameter of'the draft-roll, and after being slipped over the same the coverings or cots were secured thereto by suitable cement. In order to accomplish this, it was necessary to send the draft-rolls, when the coverings or cots became worn or injured, to persons who made a business of recovering the rolls. Otherwise it required considerable care and skill in properly and successfully removing the old or worn-out covering and replacing it with a new one. Coverin gs have also been formed from a compound composed of india-rubber and pulverized plumbago or black-lead, which were ground together previous to vulcanizing. Bothof the above classes of coverings or cots were open to very serious objections, that of flutin g, causing lapping up of the roll, as it is called.
The object of the present invention is to remove as far as possible the above objections by forming the interior of the cot or covering of sufficient elasticity to admit of being drawn on over the end of the draft-roll and securely held in-place thereon by its own elasticity without the use of cement, thereby enabling the covering or cot to be removed when worn out and replaced bya new one by a boy or any unskilled laborer. In addition to forming the covering or cot with an elastic interior, it is the object to have the exterior or outer surface thereof of plumbago, which will be non-elastic, and will not flute and cause lapping up of the roll, as would be the case were the outer or exterior surface of rubber or other similar elastic material. lhese objccts'I attain by the construction substantiallyas shown in the drawings and hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the covering or cot, its interior diameter being slightly less than that of the draft-roll over which it is placed, so that the covering or cot will hold itself on the roll by its own elasticity. I
The covering or cot A, which may be of any desirable size to conform to the size of the the diameter of the opening in the covering or cot A is but very little less than that of the' draft-roll, sufficient only to hold the covering or cot in place after being drawn over or on the draft-roll.
A very important feature of the plumbago surface a is the non-conformityto any surface with which it may be brought in contact, while the elastic interior b will act as a cushion for the plumbago surface, thereby rendering the cot or covering of the required elasticity for the purpose intended.
The elastic interior b enables the covering or cot to readily adhere to the surface of the draft-roll without the employment of "any adhesive material, or requiring skilled laborcommonly known to the trade as a roll-coverer.
Having now fully described, my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A covering or cot for draft-rolls, having its interior formed. of an elastic material and In testimony that I claim the above I have its exterior of plumbago, substantially as and hereunto subscribed my name in the presence 10 for the purpose set forth. of two witnesses.
2. A covering or cot for draftrolls, formed 5 of two independent layers, the interior layer being composed of rubber and the outer layer \Vitnesses: of plumbago, substantially as and for the pur- H. S. WINANS, pose specified. H. A. HALL.
EDWARD L. PERRY.
