l'Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in attachments for firearms.
An object of this invention is to protect the rifiing in a gun barrel adjacent the outer end thereof by preventing the portion of the gun cleaning rod intermediate its ends from engagement with the rifling of the barrel during cleaning operations, as the cleaning rod is reciprocated and/or twisted.
Other objects and features will become apparent in following the illustrations.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view of the outer end of a gun barrel, portions being broken away in section to illustrate detail of the attachment on the gun barrel;
Figure 2 is a side view of a fragmentary part of a gun barrel with the attachment applied at the end thereof;
Figure 3 is an end view taken substantially along the plane of line 33 in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line 4--4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is an exploded perspective view of the elements which form the attachment.
In cleaning a gun barrel, it is the usual practice to reciprocate a ramrod or cleaning rod in the bore of the barrel, said rod having a wadding at the end thereof. Periodic cleaning is necessary in order to maintain the firearm in proper condition.
During the cleaning operations, it is not infrequent that the rod, intermediate its ends, engages the inside surface of the barrel and it is not uncommon that this engagement causes injury to the rifiing at the very end of the barrel.
The instant attachment prevents this contact of the rod with the rifling of the barrel.
The outer end portion of a gun barrel in is illustrated in the drawings and has a part of the conventional structure a gun sight element [2 rising from the upper surface thereof. The rifling [4 in the barrel is purely conventional in nature and typical of certain types of firearms which rely on the twist of the projectile to direct it accurately. v
The attachment consists of a clamp l8 which is substantially c-shaped and is adapted to extend around only a portion of the gun barrel.
2 without interference caused by the presence of the element l2.
Means for releasably fastening the clamp in place on the outer end of the gun barrel is provided. The illustrated means consists of a screw 24 which has a knurled head and which is disposed in the thickened end portion iii of the clamp 16. The screw is passed through an internally threaded passageway and is adapted to contact the outside surface of the end of the barrel [0.
A pair of spaced threaded openings 26 and 28, respectively, are provided in one face of the clamp l6. Screws 30 and 32 are disposed in the openings 26 and 28 after passing through slots 34 and 36 which are formed in the collar 38.
The collar 38 rests against the outside surface of the clamp I6 and is adapted to overlie a part of the end of the gun barrel [0 This collar has an opening 40 with a slip 42 rising from the collar and disposed around said opening. The opening 49, lip 42, and collar 38 form a guide for the cleaning rod, preventing it from coming into contact with the rifling of the barrel after the cleaning rod has been inserted through the open end of said barrel. The screws 30 and 32 in the openings 28 and 26, after passing through the slots 34 and 36, are used to adjustably fasten the guide to the clamp.
Reference to Figure 4 shows that there are two outwardly diverging surfaces 50 and 5| on the inside of two legs of the clamp which engage the outside surface of the gun barrel. These the barrel so that the device may be used on gun The outer ends l8 and-20 of the clamp l-S are barrels having different thicknesses and widths. The barrel contacting surfaces 50 and 5| and the inner end of the screw 24 may be provided with a cover. for example, rubber, felt or other fabric, to prevent the possibility of abrasive action of the contacting surfaces on the gun barrel. Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: r
' For use with the barrel of a gun which is provided with rifiing in its bore, the improvement comprising a clamp adapted to be fastened at the end of the barrel, a cleaning rod guide which includes a collar with an opening substantially the same diameter as the bore, a fastening element securing said collar to the outer face of said clamp to thereby mount said guide at the said slot so that said collar may be adjusted with respect to said clamp.
