The invention is illustrated inthe. vdrawing as incorporated in apparatus' designed primarilvfor operation on shoes of the type illustrated. in United States Letters Patent No. "2,385,743, granted September 25, 1945, on an application led in the name of Samuel B. Vaisev.` It is' to be understood, however, .that the' invention is not limited in its scope to' apparatus` constructed and arranged to' operate on shoes of the type illustrated in the Vaisey patent but is appli'- cable to apparatus for performing a force lasting or slip lasting operation on any and 'all shoes having closed heel ends;
It is an object ofthe present' invention to provide apparatus for' effecting relative height'- wi'se movement of the heel end portion' 'of` a shoe and a last mounted therein.' More specifically it is thev object of the invention to' effect such relative heightwise movement oi' 'a' shoe and a last mounted therein in order to force the last heightwise thereof into intimate contact withv the interior or foot facing' surface of the shoe bottom. i
With the above obects in View the' present invention in one aspect" thereof comprises' apparatus consisting ofa `standard having a gripper jaw' mounted thereon and-constructed and ar-l ranged to engageV the topr margin off-a shoe and to gripit againstl the outerl surfacel of the standard andjh'old it during' the'shoe-shaping' operati-on. For `closing' the'V gripper'jaw on the shoe a plunger is mounted in a guidewayentend--v ing from' top to bottom of the standard, said plunger having mounted thereon means operable to effect the closing 'of' the `gripper jaw on the shoe-f. For imparting a` Shaping operation. to the shoe there is mounted in the upperl portion of the guideway a slide having mounted thereon a member constructed and arranged toV engage the cone' portion of a last mounted in the shoe. 'Theslide is' moved upwardly bythe plunger to effect the shoeeshaping operation, the operation of the slide being timedto commence after the plunger has operated to' bring the gripper jaw into gripping engagement vwith the upper.
The invention will now be illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawing which discloses in sectional elevation apparatus ernbodying the features of the present invention.

In order to provide clearance for the vertical movement cf the bracket 54 the standard 2 has a slot 85 formed therein and arranged to communicate with the borel $3.
When the gripper jaw is in its retracted position the bracket 54 rests against the bottom end face of the slot 80 and is held against upward movement by a spring 82 surrounding the lower portion of the plunger I2 and confined between the base of the standard 2 and the collar 5G mounted on said plunger. The bracket 54 is formed with parallel sidefaces which have sliding engagement with the vertical walls of the slot 80 formed in the standard and thus maintain the width-wise position of the plunger 58 and the orientation of the 'collar 5G. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. Apparatus comprising a standard having a guideway extending from top to bottom thereof, a gripper jaw mounted on the standard and constructed and arranged to engage the top margin of a shoe and grip it against the outer surface of the standard, a slide mounted in the upper portion of the guideway in the standard,Y a member carried by the slide and constructed and arranged to engage the cone portion of a last mounted in the shoe, a plunger slidably mounted in the lower portion of the guideway in the standard, means carried by the plunger and operable by upward movement of the plunger to close the gripper jaw on the top margin of the shoe, and means for effecting upward movement of the plunger first to close the gripper jaw on the shoe and thereafter to impart upward movement to the slide thereby to force the last into intimate contact with the interior of the shoe bottom.
2. Apparatus comprising a standard having Ia bore extending from top to bottom thereof, a gripper liaw pivotally mounted on the standard and constructed and arranged to engage the top margin of a shoe and grip it against the outer surface of the standard, a shaft slidably mounted in the upper portion of the bore in the standard, a member carried by the shaft r' and constructed and arranged to engage the cone portion of a last mounted in the shoe, a plunger slidably mounted in the lower portion of the bore in the standard, a bracket fixed to the plunger, a spring pressed pin mounted in the bracket and constructed and arranged to close the gripper jaw on the shoe during upward movement of the plunger, and an actuator for moving the plunger upwardly iirst to close the gripper jaw on the shoe and thereafter to impart upward movement to the sliding shaft thereby to force the last into intimate contact with the interior of the shoe bottom.
3. Apparatus comprising a standard, a sliding shaft in the standard for lifting a last inv a shoe, a gripper jaw mounted on the standard and arranged to grip the upper of a shoe against the standard, a slide initially spaced from theshaft, and means on the slide for engaging the gripper and forcing it yieldingly against the upper dur` ing initial movement of the slide. further movement of the slide lifting the shaft to force the last into the shoe the upper` of which is held by the gripper.
