3 Claims.
This invention relates to hosiery forms and more particularly to a closure plate for the opening in the bottom of the form, which plate serves to hold the counterbalancing toe weight in position in the form and which is capable of limited adjustment so that it may be used with forms of different heights requiring weights of different sizes.
One attractive type of hosiery forms simulates the foot and leg of a person standing on tip-toe and it is customary to provide a counterbalancing weight in the toe portion so that the form will stand upright without other support. With leg portions of different lengths, weights of different sizes are required and various expedients have been used for holding these weights in position. It will also be understood that the opening in the foot portion of these forms within the inwardly turned flange of the foot portion should be provided with a closure plate.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved closure plate suitable for use in various heights of forms.
In accordance with a feature of the invention I have provided a one-piece closure plate having an integral, inwardly projecting hump, one surface of which engages and holds the weight in position in the toe.
Still another feature of th invention resides in a closure plate having a raised mid portion the edge of which substantially fits the edges of the opening in the form and having a marginal portion useful for cementing the closure plate to the form.
Preferably the flange surrounding the raised mid portion is of sufiicient width so that it will wholly cover the bottom of the form regardless of the adjustment of the closure plate.
These and other features of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification in which Fig. 1 is an angular view of a closure plate and a toe weight with which this closure plate coacts;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a completed hosiery form having a portion of the foot broken away to expose the weight and the closure plate in position therein.
The illustrated form comprises a leg portion [0 finished at the top by means of an inwardly ex- This closure plate is a one-piece construction having an internally extending hump or wedgeshaped inward extension 22. The outer surface of the front portion 24 of the hump coacts with the upright face 26 of a toe Weight 28. The upper surface of the toe weight is shaped to flt the interior of the toe portion of the form while the bottom and rear surfaces are flat. Contacting with the bottom surface of the Weight is a midportion 30 constituting the bottom of the closure plate, which portion is raised slightly above the level of the marginal flange l8, while the upright front portion 24 presses against the rear surface of the toe weight 28 to hold it against the toe portion of the form. Added strength is given to the closure plate by making the hump 22 in the form of a wedge so that the upper edge of the upright portion 24 is braced by an inclined portion 32 and the ends of the wedge are each closed by a stiffening triangular side portion 34 thus making'the whole closure dust and liquid proof and making the hump or inward extension 22 integral with the bottom portion 30 of the plate. It will be seen that the closure with its hump is made up of sheet-like portions of substantially uniform thickness.
These plates are prepared with their marginal flange [8 Wide enough to permit the adjustment necessary to cause the upright surface 24 to contact with the upright end surfaces 26 of Weights of different sizes, it being understood that the opening is large enough to provide for endwise adjustment of the plate for this purpose. After the plate 28 has been attached by cementing the flange I8 to the flange I6 then any marginal excess either at the front or rear ends of the plate may be trimmed away to match the contour of the foot portion of the form.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A hosiery form having a leg and foot portion representing those of a person standing on tip toe, the toe of said form being flattened on its under face, a Weight in the toe end of said form shaped on its upper surface to be received in the form and flattened on its under and rear surfaces, and a closure plate secured to the flattened under portion of the toe, said plate being provided with an integral Wedge-shaped inward projection, one portion of said projection engaging the rear end of the weight, thus holding it against the inside of the toe.
2. A hosiery form having an inwardly extending flange around the margin of an opening in the bottom of the toe portion, a closure plate secured to said flange, and a weight substantially fitting the toe portion of the form, said closure plate having an integral, wedge-shaped, inward extension made up of sheet-like portions of substantially uniform thickness and comprising a flat upright portion to engage the rear end of the weight, an inclined rear portion extending from the top of the flat portion to the bottom of the plate, and side portions joining the aforementioned portions to the bottom of the plate.
3. A hosiery form representing the leg and foot of a person standing on tip toe, said form having an integral one-piece wall terminating at the bottom of the form in an inwardly extending flange forming a flat supporting surface and leaving a bottom opening, a weight in the toe por tion of the form, and a closure plate having a 4 raised mid portion substantially fitting the edges of the opening and a marginal portion secured to said flange, said plate having a projection within said flange extending inwardly from the plate to engage the rear end of the weight and hold it in the toe portion of the form, said projection being integral with the plate and offering no opening into the interior of the form.
