Description
UNITED STATES Parlava* OFFICE.
HENRY B. GREENLEAF, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS..
SEWER-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent -No. 260,563, dated July 4, 1882.
Application fnaiAprn1o,1ss2. (No moaei.)
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. GREENLEAE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk vand State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewer-Traps and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure is plan or top view. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section through the line s s.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
My invention has relation to traps for house drains and sewers; and it consists in the improved construction of the same, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having for its object to provide a perfectly sealed and at the same time a thoroughly ventilated trap, which will effectually prevent gases and foul odors from the drains or sewers from entering the building to which it is applied.
My improved sewer-trap is composed of a shell, D, which maybe of iron, stoneware, or other suitable material, having the inlet E and outlet F. This shell contains two chambers or basins, A and B, which are separated by a bridge-wall, C, that extends upward from the bottom of the shell D to the same level as the inlet E, which is on a somewhat higher level than the outlet F.
Above the basins A and B isa chamber, G, formed by the parallel curtains or diaphragms a and 11, which extend downward from the upper part of the trap to a sufficient depth to form, in connection with the bridge-wall C, a perfect Water seal in either of the two basins, A and B, thus forming substantially a double trap, ,with the water in the inner basin, A, higher than that in the outer basin,B, caused by placing the outlet F at a lower level than the inlet, E.
Chamber G has a hub or opening, K, in the top of the trap, to which a Ventilating pipe or iue (not shown inthe drawings) is to be attached. This flue should be carried to such a height that will secure free ventilation of chamber G, and it may for this purpose be connected with the roof-conductors, or with Vventilating-pipes where such exist, or with the lines or chimneys of the building. There is also a hub on the side of the trap, as shown at L in Figs. 2 and 3, which opens into the inner basin, A, ,below the water-line, and may be connected, if desired, by suitable piping with the yard-cesspool.
Hub L may, ofcourse, be placed on either side of shell D, so as to form a right or left hand trap.
In the top of the shell are three openings, fm, n, and o, which are closed respectively by tightly-fitting removable covers m', a', audio. These are for the purpose of cleansing the trap "when required, as theygive access to all its parts. By removing the cover m and applying a hose to the opening the trap canl be tlushed without breaking the water-seal inthe inner basin, A, andby replacing cover m and removing u and o' the sediment may be removed from both basins without any gas or odor escaping through the drain.
The central ventilated chamber, G, effectually prevents siphoning7 of the trap, and
-also carries oli" the gases which emanate from the water in the outer basin,'B which are carried oft' through the ventilating-tube attached to the opening K. 'i
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The sewer-trap herein shown and described, composed of an outer shell or casing, D, having the inlet E on a higher level than the outlet F, and provided with the basins A B, bridge-wall O, curtains a b, forming the chamber G, hubs K and L, apertures m, a, ando, and covers m', n', and of, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose shown and specied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
'HENRY B. GREENLEAF.
