Description

l (mmm) H. J. WA'TTBYNB.
. GIGAR PRESS. No. 260,510. Patented July 4,1882.4
u WITNESSES: INVBNTOR ATTORNEY UNITED; STATES PATENT Ori-nea@ HENRY J.' YVATTEYN E, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR-PREss.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,510, dated J-'uly 4, 1882.
Applicationfled J une 3, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom @t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY J. 'WATTEYNE of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iu Presses for Packing Cigars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved press for packing cigars into boxes; and the invention consists of a bent supporting-standard having a'gscrew-nut at the upper end and sidewise-extending ears, and a follower guided by Similar letters of reference indicate the cor# responding parts.
A in the drawings represents the bed-plate,
and B the upright standard 0f my improved v press for packing cigars. The bed-plate A is screwed to or otherwise fastened securely to the table, bench, or other support, and the standard B bent forward at the upper end, and provided with a screw-collar, a, for the screwspindle Gof the follower D. A hand-wheel, G', is applied to the upper end of the spindle C above the standard B, and an adjustable screwnut,E, below the hand-wheel, said screwnut being adjusted higher or lower on the screw-spindle C, and then secured thereto by a elampscrew, a', so as to regulate the depth to which the follower may be lowered. Sidewise of the screw-collar a of the standard'B extend lateral perforated ears b b, which are cast in one piece with the standard, and which serve to guide fixed vertical rods d d of the follower D..
The press is designed to be used with a number of interchangeable followers, D, of different size, according to the size of the cigarboxes to be packed, each follower being intended to pass into the-box of corresponding size, so as to compress the cigars without the use of the wooden compressing-blocks hereto- Fig. 2 is a front eleva-- fore in'use. Thefollower can therefore be' used to compress the cigars in the box after three 0r four rows have been placed in the same, so as to give them a slight pressure before the remaining rows are put in. As the follower fits exactlyinto the cigar-box, andas it is keptat the same level by the vertical guide-rods, a perfectly even pressure in a vertical direction is exerted upon the cigars, and consequently a more uniform compression cf the same obtained. After all the rows have been placed into the box the cigars are pressed a second time by the follower, the screw-nut being properly adjusted on the screw-spindle, so as to accurately control the degree of compression in all boxes of the same size.
For the purpose of interchanging the different sizes of followers, the center socket, e, cast on the top of the follower, is provided with a diametrical slot, e', for passing a U-shaped locking key or staple, f, preferably of square cross-section, through the same, said key engaging an annular groove,f, at the lower end of the spindle C, so as to attach thereby each follower securely to the spindle.
The keyfmay be arranged at the bent end with a button or ring for being conveniently taken hold ofin removing or inserting the key.
Any other fastening device by which the follower is readily attached to the lower end of the spindle or removed therefrom may be used, as I do not confine myself to the specilic construction shown.
The advantages of my'eigar-packing press are-that cigars ot' different sizes may bepressed into boxes of corresponding sizes by the same press, simply by interchanging the followers, that the cigars may be pressed after three or four rows have been placed into the box, and
that no sidewise displacement or injuring-of the cigars in the nox can take place, as the pressure is uniform over the entire surface of the cigars.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A press for packing cigars into boxes, consisting of a bed-plate, a supporting-standard having a screw-collar and laterallyextending perforated ears, a vertical screw-spindle,
and an interchangeable follower having xed lvertical guide-rods, and means whereby the follower is detachably connected to the lower IOC end of the spindle, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a press for packing cigars into boxes, thecombination of a bed-plate, A, bent stand- 5 ard B, having a screw-collar, a, and laterallyextending perforated ears b b, a screw-spindle, C, having an annular groove, e, near its lower end, a follower, D, having vertical guide-rods d d, and a slotted center socket, e, and a lockro ing key or staple,f, whereby the follower is detachably secured to the spindle, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a bed-plate, A, a standard, B, having a screw-collar, a, and i5 laterally-extending guideears b b, screw-spin-
