Description

July 29, 1952 c. TERRY RIFLE STOCK CARTRIDGE CASE Filed Oct. 1 1951 INVENTOR CLARENCE TERRY ATTORNEY Patented July 29, 1952 UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE RIFLE STOCK CARTRIDGE CASE 7 Clarence Terry, United States Air Force Application October 1, 1951, Serial No. 249,075:
1 Claim. ((31. 2244.5)
This invention relates to a rifle stock cartridge case and has for an object to provide a readily attachable and detachable cartridge case arranged to be readily mounted on or removed from the stock of a rifle, particularly a sports-. mans or hunters rifle, although of course equally applicable to any type of rifle stock.
A further objectof this invention is to provide a readily attachable and removable rifle stock cartridge case which would be very useful to the hunter or sportsman for easily carrying extra cartridges and other items in a very handy position in the field.
A further object of this invention is to provide 'a'rifle stock cartridge case which also has means for carrying other accessories that are useful while hunting, including particularly a first aid tube'and a flexible wire for cleaning the bore of the rifle, particularly useful when the muzzle of a rifle has been accidentally plunged into snow or mud as sometimes happens while hunting in the field or in the woods.
A further object of this invention is to provide a rifle stock cartridge case which may be readily attached to stock of a rifle so that av supply of cartridges may be kept handy to the rifle at all times Without the necessity of keeping the-rifle loaded.- This is particularly useful on ranches where a rifle must be kept-handy to protect the livestock from predatory animals, thus enabling the rancher to grasp his rifle and have a cartridge handy for easy loading, while at the same time avoiding the dangerous disadvantage of keeping the rifle loaded at all times. Yet when desired, the cartridge case can be quickly unbuckled and removed from the rifle stock as in the case when there are children in the household where the rifle is normally stored.
A further object of this invention is to provide a rifle stock cartridge case that may be quickly and readily attached to or removed from a rifle stock, and when so attached to the rifle stock, is normally supported on the right hand side of the rifle stock for use by a person who is right-handed, thus leaving the left hand side of the rifle stock substantially unobstructed whereby it will not interfere in the slightest with the handling or aiming of the rifle, yet is in a handy position for removing cartridges from the case and loading the rifle as needed. Obviously for use by a left-handed person, the case and fastening means may be arranged to fasten to the left side of the rifle stock within the principles of this invention.
With the foregoing and other objects in view,
2| extending 'ju'st abovet'he open end 22 of the this invention comprises the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, claimed and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a rifle stock to which the cartridge case: of this invention .has been attached. r
Fig. 2 is a planview of the opposite side of Fig. 3 is a partly broken away. plan View of the opened cartridge case of this invention, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
There is shown at III the cartridge case of this invention detachably'mountedpn one face H of a rifle stock l2. The cartridge case l0 consists of an open pouch it having a closure flap l5 integrally extending upward from the rear face It of the pouch l4, Mounted horizontally in the open pouch M are a plurality of cartridge or tubular member receiving loops Hi'having an opening appropriate to the object to be received and supported therein. As shown, all of the loops 18 are of a size to receive and support cartridges 20 inserted therethrough with their upper ends front face 23 of the pouch 14. One of the loops as at 24 is of a somewhat larger diameter than theremaining loops and'is intended to receive and support a somewhatlargertubularmember 25 which may contain first aid materials such as a 'cutting'blade, adhesive'bandages and patches, a vial of antiseptic fluid or the like.
Secured on the inner face of the closure flap I5 is a patch type pocket 26 having an open edge 21 at its top somewhat smaller than the bottom edge thereof. This pocket 26 is particularly intended for receiving and holding a flexible rifle bore cleaning wire coiled therein and it remains in position due to the fact that the open side 21 is smaller than the bottom whereby the opposite sides diverge away from the open side and thus secure the coiled wire therein.
Fastening means for securing the pouch I4 to the face I l of the stock I2 includes a pair of vertical straps 30 secured to the back face of the pouch I4 and extending vertically upward along the face i l of the rifle stock i2 over the top thereof down about the opposite face 3| under the lower edge and provided with fastening buckle means 32 to cooperate with the lower edges of the straps 30 below the pouch It so as to leave the 3 strap 33 is secured across vertically extending straps 30 at the back face of the pouch I4 and extends around the rear edge 34 of the rifle stock l2 as at 35 and then along the opposite face 3| of rifle stock l2 where it is fastened to the downwardly extending portions of the vertical strap 30 as at 36. The horizontal strap 33 thus provides a loop and serves to properly position the fastening, straps and the pouch on that face of the rifle stockiwhich is opposite the aiming face or side of the rifle stock and leaves the aiming side of the rifle stock substantially free of any against the face ll of the rifle stock [2 with the loop portion 35 of horizontal strap 33 passing;
about the rear edge 34 of the rifle stock, whereof this invention, what is claimed is:.
' A readily attachable rifle stock cartridge case 7 comprising a substantially flat pouch arranged to lie along one face of a rifle stock, said pouch having a, closure flap provided with fastening means, a plurality of cartridge or tube receiving "loops secured in said pouch between the front andrear sides thereof for supporting cartridges or tubes in vertical position therein for ready upon the vertical straps 30 are brought up under the bottom edge of the rifle stock and the buckles 32 are fastened holding the cartridge case in position mounted on the rifle stock. The closure flap l5 may be held in closed position by c0- operating snap fasteners 31 located on the closure flap l5 and the front face 23 of the pouch I 4, thus protecting the cartridges 2| or other objects in the cartridge case both against accidental loss or damage. When needed, the flap [5 is easily unfastened and raised and the cartridges or other contentsof the cartridge case may be readily removed therefrom as needed. As will be apparent from the foregoing description, it is an important feature of this invention that the cartridge case by a unitary device is readily attachable to or removable from a rifle stock, and that-it doesnot necessitate any modification whatsoever of the rifle stock, thus making it readily attachable to any existing rifle stock. It is thus a decided improvement over the cartridge supports shown in U. S. Patents Nos. 143,415; 173,543; 394,376; and 1,693,289, each of which necessitates a special modification of the rifle stock in order to support the cartridge container thereon or therein which of course would have to be made by a skilled workman and wherein the cartridge container cannot be removed therefrom and attached to another rifle stock unless the other rifle stock has been similarly adapted. In this invention, the rifle stock car,- tridge case is readily attachable to or removable fromany rifle stock of the conventional type without any modification thereof whatsoever,
' removal from the opened top thereof, and means for readily and detachably securing said pouch to a rifle stock comprising a pair of vertically extending fastening straps secured to the back of said pouch of a length to extend over the top edge, down the opposite face of the rifle stock and under the bottom edge, cooperating buckle means on each fastening strap closely adjacent said pouch, and a horizontally extending strap having one end secured to said pair of vertical straps adjacent the back face of said pouch and having its other end looped about and secured to the downwardly extending portions of said vertical straps, the looped portion of said horizontal strap cooperating with the rear'edge of the rifle stock in positioning the cartridge case thereon and providing a substantially unobstructed opposite face on the'rifle stock;
