0. W. ROGERS.
STOGK GAR.
INVENTOR }I%ESSES: g7
ATTORNEY u. PHERS Phah-Umagnpher. Wnlhilvgian. u, c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OHARLESW. ROGERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ROGERS & TURNBULL, OF SAME PLACE.
STOCK-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,421, dated July 4, 1882.
Application filed September 29, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Bosses, of the city of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Oars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to partitions of stockcars intended to'be raised to the car-roof when not in use; and it consists in devices, substantially as described, whereby the lower margin of the partition is detachably joined to the vertical guide-rods, so as to permit said lower margin to be lifted and secured out of the way.
It also consists in apivotal connection of the partition at its upper margin with the eyes which run on the vertical guides, upon which pivotal connections the partition may be swung to a horizontal orinclined position when raised, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims. 7
It further consists in the combination, with the partition, its guides, audits hoisting-cords, of a shaft, to which said cords are secured, actuated by a spring'to wind up the cords, and thus to raise the partition.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a transverse vertical section of a car provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in vertical longitudinal section thereof and in transverse section of the partitions. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the upper guiding-eye of the partition, showing the pivotal connection of the partition therewith. Fig. 4: is a horizontalsection, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation, of one of the lower eyes of the partition, showing the construction by which the same is detachable from the solid guide-rod.
In another application for a patent, of even date herewith, hollow guides are shown, with appropriate devices for detachably connecting the partition therewith. In the structure described in this application solid or unslotted guides are contemplated, requiring modifications in the connecting devices, which modifications are herein set forth and claimed.
Renewed May 12, 1882. (No model.)
A represents a transverse flexible partition; B B, vertical guide-rods therefor; G, a transverse shaft over the partition; 0, pulleys thereon; O cords secured to said pulleys at one end and at the other connected with the partition, and D a spring by which the partition is raised.
The partition A has corner-plates A, to which the eyes A and A are secured. The upper eyes, A arepivoted to the corner-plates by pintles a, Fig. 3,arranged in the same horizontal axis. The lower eyes, A", have each the hinged part or hasp a, which swings on the 'pintle a torelease the eye from the rod B. A turn-pin or thumb-screw, a holds the parts of the eye about the guide-rod.
When the partition is to be lifted and seoured out ofthe way, the lower eyes, A, are
detached from the rods B, and the partition being hoisted to the car-roof, the lower margin thereof is swung up and caught upon the hooks E. In this movement the partition turns on the pivots a.
As a means of raising the partitions, the transverse shaft 0 is provided, to which the upper ends of the lifting-cords (l are connected. At one end or elsewhere on the shaft a spring, D, is applied thereto and to an adjacent stationary part ofthe car, in such manner as to raise the partition, or, if preferred, to merely counterbalance it.
Pins 01, inserted in the rods B, above or through either of the eyes, hold the partition in place when lowered.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with the vertically-movable partition and the rods B, the detachable eyes A, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The'eyes A provided with the hinged part or hasp a and a suitable fastening, e in combination with the partition and vertical guide-rod, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the guide-rods B and with the partition A, of eyes A locking the lower portion of the partition detachably to the rods, and eyes A sliding on the rods and pivoted to the partition, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in a stock-car, of verti- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as cal guides and a counterbalanced hinged parmy invention I affix my signature in presence IO tition slidingthereon, substantiallyas setforth. of two witnesses.
5. In a stock-car, the guides 13 and a parti- 1 5 tion, A, sliding on said guides, in combination ROGERS with a shaft, 0, cords C and a spring eon- Witnesses: nected to the shaft to turn the same and raise JAMES MONTGOMERY,
