invention-relates to certain new and "useful improvements in extensible foot rest attachments :for chairs and an object of "the invention is -'to provide a simple inexpensive and efficient foot rest or a construction adapted to .be vappliedto various kinds of chairs to afford :a rest for the fleet with the legs in extended or bent position and one which is capable of being: readily arranged in position for use and capable of being compactly collapsed .beneath a chair when not in use.
Another'sobject' of the invention is the provision =13.. foot "rest" :of' the :character hereinafter described, which may be connected tostandard and conventional. chairs by a simple operation requ'iringthe minimum :degree of effort and which may .be secured to theachair by one other than :a rskilled. mechanic 1 Another object of the invention is to :provid anextensible foot: rest which is-completely assembled, ready'forinstallation by therpurcha-serupon :the chair with whichit is :desired to associate ith'enfootgrest. y Y j Other objects will :appearjhereinafter.
The "invention consistsiin the hover-combination and arrangement of parts to be'hereinafter described "and claimed;
'Theiinvention will :be best-understood by reference-to theraccompa-nyingdrawings showing the preferred form of .constructionrand in which:

.Fig. 7 is a sectional detail view taken-isubstancomplished by the preferred ionnofaconstructi'on shown in the accompanying drawings: .Such construction preferably comprises a'ioot rest generally indicated :at 11).. Th'isio'ot rest-coniprises a foot plate. H comprising a iba'selplate 12 I supporting {3143115111011 :13. V

"with: elongated slots 55. it are bolts '51 which connect spaced-arms .52 to thetray"S tter-longitudinal adiustmentwithrregspectrto the sidewalls;
The foot plate is supported by a-pair of legs 14 and l d-preferably formed'Ueshaped'withitheir limb portions 16 arranged in cross relation with respect-to each other and pivoted together in "scissors forma't'ion'by means of bolts H. The end portion 1'8 of the limb portions N5 of the leg: l4
a're'pivotally' connected asat Hi to dependingllugs 20- provided by a cross bar '2l secured in any suitable manner as by means of bolts 2-2 to the base plate ['2 of the foot plate H.
The end portions 23 of the limbs 13 of "the leg 15 are connected together by means of a cross bar -24; This cross bar '24 is supported for parallel movement with respect to and be neath the'base plate 12 by spaced -guide bars 25 securedas-at 26 to such base plate I2.
A keeper-orlatchbar 21 is secured'tothe base plate l2 and is adapted to have latched engage.- men't-wi'th the cross bar 24 when the legs 14 and [5 are disposed in extended position with respect to each other and-with respect to the 'b'aseplate I -2'; The cross bar 24 is 'yieldably disposed to there'ar of the'la'tch bar 21 bymeans of a spring 28 "having one end portion secured as a-t .29 'to "a reinforcing bar BUucar'ried'by the. plate, t-Ziand its opposite end portion secured to the cross The structure for connecting the 'foot rest l0 tea frame element-'32 of :a chair 33 comprisesa tray '34. This tray 34 includes .side walls 315,
an end wall- 36 and abottom wall 31, there being an open "front '38 .to the tray. Itis. within. this tray that the foot rest I0 is confined when in vertical adjustment with respect to the bar 40.
This-bar .40 is attached to the frame 3-2 of the chair '33 by screws 41.
' The inne'riend'portion of the tray 34 is adjustablyiiconnecteditoithe:frame of the chair .33. This :is accomplished by providing an'angle bar 42, one
leg 43 of which is committed,to"v the frame 32 by a; screw A4. The other leg-45 of the angle bar @42 by' means of a 'slot and bolt connection-46 is connected to a lateral extension 41 of anarm 48;; sThis arm 48 by means of theslot and'bolt the "The's'ide walls 3'5 of the tray-31ere-provided Slidable; in these slots The outerendjportions of these spaced arms 52 :areiprovidedwithelonand pulled outwardly with respect to the tray 34.
In this outward movement of the foot rest from the tray 34, it is guided by the spaced arms 52. When the foot rest has reached its extended position with respect to the tray 34 as.
shown in Fig. 1, the legs M and IE will pivot with the help of the spring 28 to extended position to support the foot plate I l in foot. supporting posi- I tion with respect to the chair.
When the legs :4 and have pivoted'to extended position as shown in Fig. 6, the cross rod .24 will be engaged in latched relation with respect to the keeper bar 2'! thus latching the legs [4 and i5 in the aforesaid extended position.-
To collapse the foot rest ID, the outer. endof the foot plate II is pivoted upwardly while the inner end portion is restrained by the hand from movement. This upward movement of the outer end of the foot plate l-I disengages the cross rod 24 from the keeper bar 21 and permits the legs to collapse in position for movement of the foot rest into the tray '34 beneath the chair 33.
. By providing an adjustable connection between the bar 50 and the tray 34 and between the angle arm 42 this tray may be adjusted laterallywith respect to the bottom of the chair to avoid interference with any of the bottom structure of the chair or the ornamental parts thereof such as is indicated at 33, which would otherwise interfere with movement of the foot rest into the tray 34 I beneath the chair.
By providing the adjustable connection between the arm 48 and the tray 34, the anglearm 42 may be adjusted relatively to the tray to compensate 'for differences in location of the frame structure of the chair to which the angle arm 42 is tovbe attached.
From the foregoingdescription, it is clear that l to attach my extensible foot rest-to a chair, it requires but'a simple operation, that of employing but .three screws for that purpose. By reason "user, the foot restmay be moved from and into 'foot supportingposition.
The tray and foot'rest being assembled at. the
factoryes a unit, permits the same to be soldand shipped in a compact parcel and as the foot rest is compactly positioned in the tray, the in- V 'stallation of the tray on the chair is by reaso thereof greatly facilitated. I
The several parts of this invention maybe f formed of such'material'as'will best serve the "purpose:
While I have illustrated and described the pre-,
fer red form' of constructionfor' carrying my invention into efiect, this is capable of variation and modification. without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope 7 of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
