1 This invention relates to improvementsin applicator devices and is directed more particularly to a device for applying lip rouge material to the lips and the like.

The principal objects of the invention are the provision of an applicator device which is constructed and arranged more particularly to facilitate the application of lip rouge material to the lips in a uniform manner.

According to the novel features of the invention, the applicator device is provided with alternate ridges and grooves with the grooves preferably terminating in such a fashion that the grooves are tapering towards the ends thereof. Said grooves serve as reservoirs for the lip rouge while the ridges which are preferably curving transversely provide smooth surfaces and are adapted to function as spreaders and distributors of the rouge while the grooves function to direct the flow of rouge toward the termination of the applicator device so as to facilitate outlining the desired shape of the rouge as applied to the lips.

According to special features of the invention, the applicator device is formed from more or less rigid material as distinguished from yieldable material such as sponge rubber or the like. The ridges curving as they are with the rouge material in the grooves therebetween may be readily and easily drawn across the lips without any irritating or uncomfortable efiects.

By pressing the device against the lips with varying pressures various amounts of rouge may be applied from the grooves so that it is evenly distributed by the curving ridges.

With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of an applicator device embodying the novel features of the invention;

Fig. 2 is a sectional elevational view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and

Fig. 3 is a sectional elevational view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.

an elongated body 2 which, as shown, maybe cylindrical in cross section. However',-the body may be of'other shapes as may be desired. The upper end face! of the device isgenerally inclined as "indicated in Fig. 2 and'longitudinally of this end face 4 alternate ridges 6 and grooves 8 are provided as shown in Fig. 3. The ridges are preferably curving transversely so as to provide the smooth rolling surfaces as shown.

As shown in Fig. 2, the grooves 8 are preferably of greater depth intermediate their ends than at said ends. The grooves 8 are adapted to serve as reservoirs for lip rouge material.

With lip rouge material in th grooves B the inclined end of the device may be drawn across the lip or lips. According to the degree of pressure with which the device is pressed against the lips more or less rouge material is applied to the lips. The curving ridges are intended and adapted to traverse the lips with a sliding or rolling action as distinguished from a scraping action and thereby apply the rouge smoothly and uniformly. The upper end H) of the device, where the grooves at least have very little depth, is used to outline the rouge which is applied. That is, since the grooves are of practically no appreciable depth at the upper end of the device the said end may be used to define a sharp marginal line to the applied rouge all as may be desired.

As has been stated, the ridges are curved transversely as distinguished from projections which may have square or sharp edges. Therefore the rounded ridges pass over the lips smoothly and apply rouge material uniformly according to the pressure applied rather than to scrape rouge material as would be the case were the ridges provided with edges which are squared or sharp.

The grooves provide reservoirs for the rouge material while the ridges are rounded for the purpose already described and as the device is drawn across the lips rouge material is smoothly and uniformly applied while the applied material may have its marginal edges defined by the outermost end of the device.

It will be desired to form the device from more" irritate or be considereduncomfortable it being desired to apply the rouge in a predetermined amount and manner. The device of the invention is adapted to apply a desired amount of rouge in an even and smooth manner and to define the marginal edges thereof.

The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purviewza'nd-rangeofi equivalencyaof'theappended claim -are"therfore intended "to be embraced therein.

What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the Uni-ted States-sis:
