As shown in Fig. 3, the pump unit I5 includes a reciprocating pump 3| and a reciprocating electricmotor 32 having thereon bow springs33 which bear against the inner surface of the casing II in a manner to make electrical contact therewith. The pump 3| projects upwardly from the motor 32 and has its outlet end 34 connected tothe lower? end ofthe tube section I9 byl means of a bushing 35 which is internally threaded so that it may be screwed onto-'the lower end of the part'A I9.'r The reciprocating pump3| includes a casing or `oylinder 36 having near' its 'lower 3end an oil inletopening 31. Above the opening-3'|, the cylinder 36 has therein annular sealing members 40 engaging the external'surface ofV the plunger 39 and preventing leakage" of V'fluid downwardly around the exterior of the plunger 39 from the pumping space 4| situated in the'upperl parti ofthe cylinder 36 between `the sealing members 40 and a check valve 42. The plunger 39 has in the side wallV thereof anopening 43 which is in continuous communication with the space 44 Within the'cylinder 36 below the sealing members 40. This opening 43 communicates with an axial passage 45 which leads upwardly through the plunger39 to the moving'check valve 46 disposed Vat the VAupper end of the plunger '39. -When the -plunger'moves upwardlyv fom'the position in which it is shown in Fig. 3, oil will be displaced upwardly from the pumping space 4| and through the standing valve 4 bers in the well comprising the casing II and the tubing string I6. The tubing string I6 is insulated from the casing II. For this purpose,

f The vcooperation of parts disclosed makes possible the efficient pumping of oil from a well by electrical means, without the use of sucker rods, and without the disadvantages resulting from the use of sucker rods. A piston stroke of twenty feet or more may beemployed.
Experience has shown that the use of electric cables extending down into the well from the top thereof is impractical, since the conditions under which cables are used results often in their injury and failure. Also, where two electrical conductors of opposite polaritycontact a liquid of electrolytic character, there will be a ow of electric Vcurrent through the liquid and if the current iiow is maintainedv in one direction there will -be an erosion of one of the conductcrsdue to electrolysis. In the invention herein disclosed, theY use in combination. of an alternating current source and a reciprocating induction-motor in the well to operate a pump which is 'suspended by a tube in the well, makes possible the use of the tube and the well casingas the electrical conductors supplying current to theV reciprocating induction motor, thereby avoiding use of a cable extended down into the well and avoiding erosion of the tube or the well casing which occurs when direct current is employed under conditions such as setforth in the foregoing explanation.
I claim as'my invention:

A special feature of -the invention is that the reciprocating motor 32-1is of induction type and therefore may be operated by power from an alternating current generator 48 which is connected in series with'the upper ends'of the lcasing vI I and the tubing string I6 by a'conductor 49 and a conductor 50 having a control switch 5| therein, this conductor 50 being connected to the upper end of the tubing string I6 by a clamp 52. One ofthe terminals of the motor 32 is connected to the tubing string I6 by the insulated 'conductor 41. and the other terminal of the motor 32 is connected to the casing Il by the bow. springs 33, thereby forming an electric circuit including the motorl 32the source of electrical ypower 48 and the tubular metal memend of said tubing string having its outlet connected to the lower end of said tubing string; a reciprocating induction motor operatively connected to said reciprocating pump; and means electrically connecting said reciprocating 'motor and said source of alternating current electrical power in' series with said tubing string and said casing. l
2. In a well pumping'device of the character described operable from a source of electrical power situated at the top of the well having a metal pipe string set therein, the combination of: a tubing string of metal in the well; a pump casing extending down from said tubing string, the upper end of said casing being connected to the lower end of said tubing string, there being an opening near the lower end of said casing connecting the interior of said casing with the space within the well; a tubular plunger vertically reciprocable in said casing, there being sealing means operative betweenr said plunger and said casing above saidropening of said casing andsaid plunger having a longitudinal passage, the lower portion of which is Vconstructed and arranged to communicatewith said opening of said casing; a check valve on said plunger'for controlling vflow through said passage of said plunger; a standing check valve in said casing for preventing reverse flow through said casing; a reciprocating electric motor operatively connected to the lower end of saidplunger; means connecting saidsourceof electricpower to the upper ends of said tubing string andsaid pipe string;l and meansv electrically connecting said motor in series with said pipe string and said tubing string.
3. In a well pumping device of the character described operable from a source of electrical power situated at the top of the well having a metal pipe string set therein, the combination of `a tubing string of metal in the well; a pump casing extending down from said tubing string, the upper end of said casing being connected to the lower end of said tubing string, there being an opening near the lower end of said casing connecting the interior of said casing with the space within the Well; a. tubular plunger vertically reciprocable in said casing, there being packing means in said casing above said opening thereof making sealing engagement with the exterior of said plunger and said plunger having a longitudinal passage, the lower portion of which is constructed and arranged to communicate with said opening of said casing; a check valve on said plunger for controlling flow through said passage of said plunger; a standing check valve at the upper end of said casing for preventing reverse iiow through said casing; a reciprocating electric motor operatively connected to the lower end of said plunger; means connecting said source of electric power to the upper ends of said tubing string and said pipe string; and means electrically connecting said motor in series with said pipe string and said tubing string.
4. In a pumping device for use in a well having a metal casing set therein and being operable from a source of electric power situated at the top of the well, the combination of a tubing vtubing string and said casing; means electrically insulating said tubing string from said casing and the exterior of said motor; contact means extending from said motor into engagement with the inner surface of said casing and making electrical connection of the operating parts of said motor with said casing; and insulated conductor means electrically connecting said tubing string with the operating parts of said motor.
5. In a pumping device for use in a Well having a metal casing set therein and being operable from a source of alternating current electric power situated at the top of the well, the combination of: a tubing string of metal extended into the well; a reciprocating pump hung from and having its outlet connected to the lower end of said tubing string; a reciprocating induction motor operatively connected to said reciprocating pump; means connecting said source of electric power to the upper ends of` said tubing string and casing; means electrically insulating said tubing string from said casing and the exterior of said motor; and means at the lower end of said tubing string electrically connecting the electrical parts of said motor in series with said casing and said tubing string.
6. In a pumping device for use in a well having a metal casing set therein and being operable from a source of alternating current electric power situated at the top of the well, the
combination of: a tubing string or metal extended into the well; ay pump at the lower end of said tubing string having its outlet connected to the lower end of said tubing string; an electric induction motor operatively connected to said pump means electrically insulating said tubing string from said casing; tubular insulator means above said motor insulating said tubing string from the exterior of said motor; means connecting said source of electric power to the upper portions of said tubing string and said casing; insulated conductor means connecting the lower portion of said tubing string with the electrical operating parts of said motor; and means electrically connecting said casing with the electrical operating parts of said motor.
7. In a pumping device for use in a Well having a metal casing set therein and being operable from a source of electric power situated at the top of the well, the combination of: a tubing string of metal extended into the well; a pump at the lower end of said tubing string having its outlet connected to the lower end of said tubing string; an electric motor operatively connected to said pump; means electrically insulating said tubing string from said casing; tubular electrical insulator means above the liquid level in the well insulating said tubing string from the exterior of said motor; means connecting said source of electric power to the upper portions of said tubing string and said casing; insulated conductor means connectingthe lower portionY of said tubing string with the electrical operating parts of said motor; and means electrically connecting said casing with the electrical operating parts of said motor.
8. In a pumping device for use in a well having a metal casing set therein and being operable from a source of alternating current electric power situated at the top of the well, the coinbination of a tubing string of metal adapted to be extended into the well; a pump at the lower end of said tubing string having its outlet connected to the lower end of said tubing string; an electric induction motor operatively connected to said pump; means on said tubing string for electrically insulating said tubing string from said casing; tubular insulator means above said motor insulating said tubing string from the exterior of said motor; said tubing string and said casing being adapted for connection to said source of electric power; insulated conductor means connected to the operating parts of said motor for connecting the lower portion of said tubing string with the electrical operating parts of said motor; and means connected to the operating parts of said motor for electrically connecting said casing with the electrical operating parts of said motor.
