Although such check-voucher sheet or unit pos- ,sesses several advantages from the standpoint of efficiency and desirability'in the writing thereof, it has been found impossible to protect suchchecks with check-protecting machines of the type heretofore known. The principal cause of this diificultyresults from the inability of such prior machines to handle the check-voucher sheet, since the relatively short or shallowthroat of such. machines couldlnot accommodate the voucher while the check was beingprinted and shredded.- l
According to the present invention, the throat 2| is deeDprlong enough to receive'the check vouchersheet when such sheet is fed into the throat voucher, first. ,There is sufiicient room in i the throat so that the voucher may occupy the rearward portion of the throat while the -appro priate portion of the check is disposed in position to be protected by the printing and shredding 7 means.

A check protector, comprising? a'body including an elongated fore and aft extending base with an elongated upper face extending lengthwise of the base, and a head disposed above the base in vertically spaced relation thereto, the space between the base and head providing an elongated horizontal throat generally coextensive with said upper face of the base; means condownwardly thereinto pursuant to manual resetnecfing h bas nd he d together at their rear ends leaving the throat open at its front and sides; printing means including a platen mounted on the base and changeable type mounted on the head near the front of the throat; typechanging'mechanism associated with the printing means and carriedby the head near the front of the throat; an operating lever for the printing means carried by the head on a transverse axis spaced. rear'wardly of the changeable type and substantially centrally positioned betweenthe front and rear ends of the body; typeresetting means positioned in the head in the space between the type-changing mechanism and the operating lever axis and operatively associated with the type-changing mechanism and the operating lever; a rocker arm disposed longitudinally in the base and having its front end serving as the mount for the platen and its rear end in proximity to the rear end of the elongated throat; force multiplying toggle mechanism at the rear end of the body and operably axis of the operating lever and being swingable into a position substantially on a line extending between the axis of the operating lever and the pivoted connection of the link with the toggle mechanism incident to unbuckling the toggle mechanism. n 3. A check protector, comprising: a body having an elongated fore and aft extending base with a flat upper face, and a head spaced above the base and secured to the base at only the rear end thereof, the space between the head and base providing an elongated throat open at its front and sides; printing means carried by the body near the front of the throat; and means for operating the printing means, including a rock shaft carried by the body for rocking about an axis transversely of the base and positioned to the rear of the printing means and substantially centrally between the front and rear ends of the body, a rocker arm disposed longitudinally in the base and operably connected with said printing means, toggle means at the rear of the body and unbucklable to operate said rocker arm, a
crank connected to the rock shaft and depending substantially directly below the axis thereof, a link operably connected between the crank and the toggle mechanism, and an operating lever fast on the shaft and extending in a reposing position substantially directly vertically upwardly from the shaft when the. toggle mechanism is buckled, the crank, link and toggle mechanism being so constructed and arranged as to swing the connection between the crank and link into a position substantially onto a line extending 4. In a check protector having a body print- 1 ing mechanism including type-carrying members individually settable about a common axis'transversely of the body, and means for operat ng the printing mechanism including a rockable operating member oscillatable between a position of repose and an operated position, the combination with the type-carrying members of a type-resetting bail havinga bight and a pair of legs positioned in the body with the legs pivoted on'a transverse axis and with the bight arranged to engage the type-carrying'fmembers, whereby the bight may sweep through an are about the pivot; axis of the legs to reset the type-carrying mem bers to their initial positions; means providing a crank arm swingablebythe aforesaid operating member; a pin on one leg of the bail and sweepable through an arcuate path attendant to movement of the bight through its arc; a link pivoted to the crank arm and having means engaging the pin including a long arcuate primary track and an angularly related relatively shorter secondary track, means for holding said link to dispose the arcuate track thereof coincident with the arcuate path of said pin while the rockable operating member is in its position of repose whereby the bail can retractively sweep without moving the link, said arcuate track accommodating movement of the link relatively to the pin pursuant to an initial phase of movement of the operating member from the repose position towardthe operated position; and means for shifting the link about its pivot on the crank arm for switching the pin to the secondary track during a succeeding phase of suchoperating member" movement whereby reverse movement of the link by the crank arm will effect type-resetting movement of the bail.
