Description

.Applicatin May 9, 1949,'serialtrattasi -'riss v inventionhas todo y with-,improvements in safety razors.
' It is among the objects' of' the invention-"to provide an improved safety razor wherein the handle element forms a box-like structure which houses the shaving head and blades when not in use.
In my United States Letters Patent No. 2,347,596, issued April 25, 1944, I show a safety razor wherein the handle is box-like and is adapted to completely house the shaving head and extra blades when not in use. My present invention embodies important .improvements in the razor shown in my said patent. rlhat is, it is a more particular object of the present invention to provide a safety razor of this type wherein a part of the handle is in the form of a drawer which slidably ts into an open-ended box, constituting the outer part of the handle and wherein the drawer is so constructed and pre-stressed as to facilitate attachment to and detachment from the head, as well as tol provide a firm attachment thereto.
Still further and subordinate objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
For the purpose of explaining how my invention may be carried into practice, I shall now describe it in one of its presently preferred embodiments for which purpose I shall refer to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of a handle element and bottom views of the guard and clamp plates, disassembled;
Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing the parts of Fig. 1 assembled;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical medial section;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged medial transverse section;
Figs. 5 and 6 are sectional views showing the guard, clamping plate and spare blades housed within the telescoped handle; and
Fig. '7 is a perspective of the guard plate.
Referring to the drawings, I show a guard plate 5, forming a part of the shaving head, having transverse slots 6 in the bottom edge of each end for the purpose to be described, a central ribV 1, and a pair of lugs 8, said rib and lugs projecting upwardly from the top of the guard plate whereby to pass through the central longitudinal slot usually provided in the conventional safety razor blade B. Between each end of the rib and the adjacent lug 8, I provide a slot 9 of inverted L-shape, opening through the guard plate, said slot providing a pair of oppositely disposed upwardly facing shoulders 9a.
2 Claims. (Cl.
lhg. handle :generally is.. c,.omp.rised, of y twoY telescopicmembers |0, Il; member lbeing box-likeand open at its topeend andjmember Iibeing drawer-like and being slidable through the open end of member l0. The handle member II has side wall extensions l2 presenting inwardly disposed, opposed flanges I2a and has its back wall longitudinally split at I5.
The drawer-like member H is made of resilient materials, such as plastic, and is formed or pre-stressed so that its side Walls tend to diverge or spread apart as best shown in Fig. 1.
To mount the handle on the guard, the outer ends of the side wall extensions l2 are inserted longitudinally in the respective slots 9 through the bottom of the guard, and as the outer handle element ID is slid upwardly on the inner element Il, the side walls of the inner element are thereby flexed inwardly towards each other, thus engaging the respective flanges 12a over the shoulders 9a, the upper split end Wall l1 of the innermember Il bearing against the under surface of the guard plate. So long as the handle members are in those relative positions, the handle is firmly secured to the guard. A hole 20 through the back wall of inner member Il, which the slit l5 intersects, tends to permit the side walls to flex apart to a greater extent when not confined by the outer handle member I0.
Next in the assembly, a blade B is mounted atop the guard plate with the rib 'l and lugs 8 projecting through the central longitudinal slot in the razor blade and the blade clamping plate 25 is then applied.
Clamping plate 25 has depending end ilanges 26 presenting inwardly disposed ears 2l at the respective corners. The flanges and ears are resilient and thus engage over the respective end portions of the guard, the ears 2l fitting intothe respective slots 6 in the bottom edges of the guard to clamp the blade against the guard.
As will be apparent, when the member l0 is moved downwardly on member I l, the extensions l2 flex outwardly as shown in Fig. 1, freeing the flanges I 2a from the shoulders 9a, permitting separation of the member Il from the guard.
The telescopic, box-like handle provides a convenient storage space for spare blades S and also provides a storage space for the guard and clamping plate when the device is disassembled, as best shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
While, in the foregoing, I have resorted to considerable detail of structure and association of parts in describing a particular example of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I have done so merely to make my invention understood Vended box-like handle member and a drawer.-
like inner handle member slidably mounted in the outer handle member, the inner handle'meniber having a pair of resilient opposed'outer end extensions inserted in said respective slots and engaging said respective shoulders, said extensions being pre-stressed to spring out of engagement with said shoulders but being normally held in engagement therewith by said outer hand member. Y
2. A safety razor comprising a shaving head having a guard plate, an open-ended box-like outer-handle member, a drax'yer-lik` inner handle member slidablytting in said outer handle mem-I berwand having back, outer yend,.inner end and side Walls, said back Wall having a longitudinal split extending transversely through the said outer end wall, and said side Walls having resilient end extensions projecting outwardly beyond said outer end Wall and terminating inopposed angular end portions, said end portions being held in engagement withthe guard plate-by3the outer cover memberl and being stressed-'to "-,disengage from the guard plate when the inner handle member is slid'outwardly of the outer handle member.
