BUCKLE Filed April 22, 1949 Patented `uly 15, 1952 BUCKLE Nils Linus Tannersj, Boden, Sweden, assignor to Gsta Wnnstrm, Boden, Sweden Application April 22, 1949, Serial No. 89,029
In Sweden June 4, 1946 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a buckle for straps provided with holes and comprising a buckle-frame bent to form a guide for the strap with a front plate, two side plates and two back flanges, a transverse bolt at one end of said buckle-frame for fastening one end of the strap and locking means cooperating with the holes in the strap.
One object of the invention is to provide a locking device which is introduced in the holes of the strap automatically by means of spring action. Another object of the invention is to provide a pressure grip on the locking device within the buckle-frame, which can easily be operated by a finger in order to release the locking device but is protected from being operated inadvertently. A still further object of the invention is to obtain a spring operated buckle of small dimensions and without any projecting parts.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view from'below of one form of the buckle according to the invention and a portion of the strap fastened thereto.
Fig. 2 is a section on lines II-lI in Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar section with the locking device in a released position.
In the drawing I designates a leather strap provided with a single row of holes 2, but it is obvious that also more rows may be used. At the one end 3 the leather strap is formed to a iiip 4 of reduced width, which flip is folded over a transverse bolt 5 and secured thereto by means of rivets 6. A plate 'I of sheet metal is bent along the longitudinal edges in such a way that a front plate 8 two side walls 9 and two back flanges I0 are formed to guide the strap. The bolt 5 is at rst bent to a U-form, and the shanks are thereafter bent at a right angle and inserted from within into holes in the flanges I and secured thereto by clinching. The middle portion of the bolt is located outside the buckle frame in such a way that the other end II of the strap can be introduced between the front plate 8 and the bolt 5 with the fixed end 3 of the strap. A locking device or tooth plate I3 is tiltingly mounted on a transverse pin I2. The tooth plate may be formed of sheet iron, in which transverse chutes are pressed in the extension of each other but from different sides in such a way that the pin l2 may be introduced in the chutes for tiltingly mounting of the tooth plate. The ends of the pin are bent at a right angle and inserted from within into holes in the flanges I0 to which the pin is secured by clinching.
In the portion of the plate I3 located between the pin I2 and the bolt 5 is pressed a chute I4, which has an extension bent towards the front plate and formed to a locking tooth I5 for cooperation with the holes 2 in the strap. The tooth I5 is normally pressed towards the front plate by means of a spring I6 made of piano-Wire. The ends of the spring are bent at a right angle and rest against the flanges I0, and the middle portion of the spring is secured to the chute III in any suitable way, i. e. by means of a pin through the plate or by Welding. The tension of the spring is so directed that the middle portion of the spring endeavours to force the tooth from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position according to Fig. 2. The opposite portion of the tooth plate forms a pressure grip, which by a finger can be pressed towards the strap in order to release the locking tooth I5.
Although only one form of the invention is illustrated in the drawing it is obvious that different modiilcations are possible without departing from the scope thereof.
I claim:
A buckle for connecting two end portions of a belt, comprising a buckle-frame bent to form a guide for a strap with a front plate forming a plane front surface of the buckle, two plane side walls and two back flanges, a U-shaped transverse bolt at one end of said buckle-frame secured to the inside of said flanges and extending beyond the ends of said side walls for fastening one end of the belt, a locking tooth plate located within said buckle-frame and covered by said front plate, a transverse pin fastened to the inside of said anges, for pivotally mounting of said tooth plate, one end of said tooth plate being located between said bolt and said pin and having at least one tooth bent towards said front plate, a transverse spring acting upon said tooth plate 'to introduce said tooth into holes in the free end REFERENCES CITED The following references are oi' record in the file of this patent:
