Description

C. A. BRUNK HANDLE FOR BOXES July 8, 1952 Filed March 6, 1951 Master A. Brunt INVENTOR.
BY fl-wfiz...
Patented July 8, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE v 2,602,688 l g 1 :HANDLE FOR BOXES chasm A. Brunk, Chico, Calif. Q Application March 6, 1951, Serial No. 214,068
My invention relates to improvements in handles for boxes, particularly pastebOard and like boxes, such as are provided for containing and dispensing soap flakes and like detergent material and are easily crushed and break open when handled by the housewife with wet hands.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a handle for such boxes constructed to straddle the box at one edge thereof for grasping by the housewife, or other person, in handling to keep the hands out of contact with the box and thereby obviate brushing and mining the box by handling with wet hands.
Another object is to provide a handle for the purpose above set forth which is adjustable to straddle boxes of different sizesand which is easily attached and detached and will interlock, when attached, with the sides of the box in a manner to prevent deforming the box while securely holding the same against slipping in the handle.
Still another object is to provide a handle for the above purposes which is adapted to be manufactured at a low cost and which is durable and will not slip in the hands.
Other and subordinate objects, within the purview of my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read in conjunction with the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating my improved handle, in the preferred embodiment thereof, applied to a box;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of I Figure 1 and drawn to a larger scale; and
Figure 3 is a composite view in perspective the hand grip angle plates detached. I
Referring to the drawing by numerals, according to my invention, a channel shaped handle I for straddling one edge of a box 2 is provided comprising a pair of hand grip angle plates 3, 4 each embodying a smooth front section 5, and a serrated and toothed section 6. The sections 5, 6 are preferably rectangular in shape.
The front sections 5 are slidably connected together in overlapping relation for relative lateral adjustment to variably space the side sections 6 apart for receiving boxes 2 of difierent sizes therebetween. For this purpose, the front section 5 of the plate 3 is provided at its ends with inturned channel guides 8 slidably receiving the ends of the front section 5 of the plate 4.
. 3Claims. (01,294, 34)
' Means are provided for fastening the front sections 5 together, and hence the plates 3, 4, in adjusted relation comprising a bolt 9 extending through a bolt hole ID in the front section 5 of the plate3 and through a transverse slot il in the front'section5 of the plate 4, the bolt 9 being. provided at the outer side of the front section 5 of the plate 4 with a wing nut 12 thereon.
The bolt 9 is provided with a square portionv l3 fitting in the slot II to prevent said bolt from turning in said slot. The following means are provided for separating the side sections 6 of the plates 3, 4 when the front plates 5 are unfastened. and for a purpose presently explained. This last means comprises a substantially C-shaped leaf spring l4 suitably fixed intermediate its ends, as at I5, on one end of a longitudinally slotted bar [6 welded, as at l1, to the inner side of the front section 5 of plate 4 with the slot 18 of said bar registering with the before mentioned slot H and having the squared portion [3 of the bolt 9 slidably fitting therein. The ends of the spring l4 project sufliciently beyond the free longitudinal edge I9 of the front section 5 of plate 4 so that in any adjusted position of the front sections 5, and also of the side sections 6, said ends will press outwardly against the plate 3 at the juncture of the sections 5, 6 of said plate 3.
Like angular prongs 20 extend inwardly from the side sections 6 of the plates 3, 4 for penetrating the sides of the box 2 when moved upwardly of said sides.
The serrations on the sections 6 preferably take the form of bosses 2| especially designed to prevent a hand grasping said sections 6 from slipping off the same.
Outwardly bulging, transversely rounded longitudinal corners 22 are provided .on the plates 3, 4 at the juncture of the sections 5, 6 to prevent said plates at said corners from tearing or mutilating longitudinal corners of the box 2.
In attaching the described handle, the plates 3. 4 are adjusted, in the manner described, to loosely fit against the sides of the box 2 and said handle positioned downwardly of said box in straddling relation to one edge wall 23 thereof. The side sections 5 are then pressed toward each other, to enter the prongs 20 in the sides of the box and the handle then slid upwardly of the box which causes the prongs to completely pierce the sides of the box and draw the side sections 6 against the sides of the box. At this point, it is explained, that the side sections 6, at least, are formed of flexible metal so that the same may flex toward each,
other and such flexing is facilitated by the type of corners 22 described. To detach the described handle, it is merely necessary to loosen the wing nut I2 whereupon the spring l4 will react, in a manner which will now be clear, to separate the side sections 6 and withdraw the prongs 23 out of the sides of the box 2. As shown in Figure 2, when the prongs 20 have fully entered the sides of the boxrz. the handle I is securely fastened to the heir against casual displacement.
Any suitable material may be used in forming the plates 3, 4, for instance tin, or a resilient.
plastic.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suflice to am part a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation. Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification,
without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what is claimed.
3.8 new is;
1. A handle of channel tape m1 straddling an edge of a box comprising a pair of hand gripfang'le plates embodying front sections and side sections;
sections and Withdraw said prongs when said plates are unfastened.
2. A handle according to claim 1 wherein said last-named means comprises a spring mounted to the front section pf one plate and bearing out- Wardly against the ide plate of the other section.
. 3. A handle according to claim 1 wherein said last-named means comprises a G-shaped spring mounted to the front section of one plate with its ends bearingoutwardly against the side section.
