Application September 7, 1950, Serial No. 183,502
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in devices for opening bobby pins, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described which, in the manner of a finger ring, may be applied to fingers of a user, so that it is efficiently sustained in an operative position while the fingers remain quite free for manipulating the hair.
Although I am aware that in the past bobby pin opening devices have been designed for positioning on a finger, such devices had the disadvantage that when a bobby pin was applied thereto for opening purposes, any pressure exerted on the pin caused the device to rotate about the finger, thus rendering the same inefiective. It is, therefore, a principal feature of the instant invention features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of 2 stantially to the thickness of the fingers I8, 20
' I while the length of the opening conforms substantially to the combined width of the two fingers, whereby the'entire device is prevented from rotating about the fingers when pressure is applied thereto by a bobby pin.
The body I2 has stepped marginal edge portions which afford a series of perimetric extending, horizontal ledges 22, 24, 26 and a series of perimetrically extending, undercut wall portions 23, 30, 32 whch extend downwardly and inwardly from the respective ledges, as shown. The respective ledges coact with the respective undercut wall portionsin defining a series of stepped, relatively sharp and perimetrically extending edges 34, 36 and 38,'to which the legs of a conventional bobby pin 40 may be applied for spreading the same, as is shown in Figure 2.
Needless to say, any one of the perimetric edges 35, 36, 38 may be used for spreading the legs of the bobby pin, but when the bobby pin opening operation is undertaken, the legs of the pin are as by accidentor mistake, the legs of the pin will parts as illustrated in the accompanying draw- I ings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the invention shown in position on two fingers of a hand,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the invention per se, taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure l, and
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of the invention per se, taken substantially in the plane erence character I 0 and embodies in its construction an elongated, substantially rectangular body l2 which is provided at the underside thereof with a longitudinally extending rigid band [4 de-' fining an elongated endless opening or loop 16 which is adapted to receive two juxtaposed fingers I8, 20 of a hand, as shown in Figure 1.
The height? of the opening it conforms subautomatically come inopening engagement with the intermediate edge 36 or with the uppermost edge 38, as the case may be.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is, to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may .be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the claimed as new is:
In a bobby pin opener, a substantially rectangular body having stepped marginal edge portions affording a series of perimetrically extending horizontal ledges and perimetrically extending undercut wall portions below the respective ledges, said wall portions having downwardly and inwardly sloping surfaces, said ledges and respective wall portions defining a series of stepped relatively sharp and perimetrically extending edges for spreading theless of a bobby :pin and invention, what is 3 a rigid band provided on the underside of said Number body and defining an elongated endless 100p 647,862 adapted to receive two juxtaposed fingers of a 594 hand, whereby to non-rotatably sustain the 2 99 2 2 opener in position on the stated fingers. 5 2,441,947 HAROLD A.
