Description
f azi RPETERS, PHOT'O-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D CV UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MUNSON C. CRONK, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
CLOTHES-BRIEF'.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MUNSON C. CRONK, of the city of Auburn, in Cayuga county and State of New York, have invented a Portable Clothes-Drier of a New and Improved Construction; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of devices hereinafter described for closing up or bringing together the radial arms of said horse, or drier, so as to make the same portable and easily moved from place to place.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its con struction and mode of operation.
A is a portable post for supporting the hub B, (see Fig. 2). To this hub is jointed the five radial arms C, D, E, F, G, at the points H, I, J, K, L, (see Figs. 1 and 2). The radial arms are prevented from falling below the proper position by the five brace cords M, N, O, P, Q, attached to the radial arms and to the sliding piece R. Said slide is shown fully in black dotted lines in a hole made for the purpose in the top of the post A. To the lower end of the slide R is attached a cord S, shown in black dotted lines and coming out of the hole in the post. The radial arms C, D, E, F, G, are each inserted into a socket T, see Fig. 3. To this socket and orming a part thereof is a piece U, and on the outward edge are four notches 1, 2, 3, 4. Vhen the radial arms are extended, the lower portion of the sockets U have a conical form, and the ring V, (see Fig. 1,) when pressed downward upon the said pieces, will fall into some of the notches 1, 2, 3, 4, in each of said pieces, and by this means are the radial arms held in the extended position, and the several notches are for the purpose of providing for the varying length of cords 1', 2', 3', 4', 5', produced by the action of the dampness to which they are subjected.
On the upper edge of the hub B, are live stands W, X, Y, Z, &c., forming a part thereof. Now if before the portable post A is in- 26,023, dated November 8, 1859.
serted into the hub B we take hold of the portion U of the socket T and bring the same into a horizontal position, and then place the upper back side of the socket T into either of the spaces I, J, K, L, M, Fig. 2, then by moving the same outward the joint pins A', A', (shown partly in dot-ted lines in Fig. 3 on each side of the socket piece,) will come into the spaces B', C', D', E', F. If now the lower portion of the socket piece U be allowed to fall into the position represented in Fig. 1, and the portable post A be then inserted into the hub, the radial arms must maintain their connection with the hub B until removed by a reversed process. Whenever the radial arms are extended, the lower ends of the said arms rest, with Whatever load they may have upon them, against the hub B, at its upper edge, thus relieving the pins A', A', almost entirely from all strain.
Each of said cords acts independently of all the others, and so long as they remain attached in the manner described above will prevent the said arms from falling below the proper position.
IVhen the said drier is to be removed from its position after using, the ring V should be raised with one hand and the other applied to that portion of the cord S, and by a slight pull downward the radial arms will be brought into a vertical position, when the ring V should be raised higher, so as to encircle all the radial arms, for the purpose of holding the same in a closed position.
Now having described the construction and mode of operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement of the hollow post A, the sliding piece R, brace cords M, N, O, P, Q, the hub B, the stands WV, X, Y, Z, Sac., the radial arms C, D, E, F, G, the ring V, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
M. C. CRONK.
I/Vitnesses:
A. BARTLETT, JOHN H. ALLEN.
