ENT 1 OFFICE ApplicationJanuary 21, 1949; Serial NOLJI'ZLSQI 1 This invention relates to new and useful improvements in valve seat reaming tools and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a valve seat reamer for air cooled motors.
Another important object of the present inven- 4 moved from the valveseat by the reaming element. i
A further object of the present invention is to provide a valve seat reamer including-a frustoconical reaming member having external teeth, an operating rod for rotating the reaming member and novel and improved means connecting the operating rod to the reaming member.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a tool forreaming the valve seats of an air cooled motor that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, small and compact in structure, neat and attractive in appearance, efficient and durable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same isintended.
Otherobjects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the cylinder head of an air cooled motor and showing the present invention applied thereto, partly in section and partly in elevation;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevational view of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of Figure 2, the hand grip being shown in part;
Figure 4 is a. horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 5-5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the base member used in conjunction with the present invention;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary elevational view showing the gauge means used in conjunction with the present invention; and
3.0laims. (cite- 12.5)
Figure 8 isa perspective view of the reamer used in conjunction with the present invention.
Referring now tothe drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral [0 represents the cylinder head ofan air cooledmotor one wall [2 of which i provided with openings [4 receiving bearings 16 that normally receive the valve stems' of valves (not shown).
A valve-supporting wall or plate I8 integrally formed with and spaced from the wall I :2 is provided'with the usual beveled seats 20 that nor mally" receive the head portionsof the valves associated with the cylinder head Ill.
The presentinvention does not attempt to claim the above conventional and Well known structure but is merely used in conjunction therewith for reaming the valve seats 20.
-To accomplish the desired results, there is provided a base member designated generally by the numeral "22 1 l and which comprises a cylindrical plug 24 for reception in one end 26 of the'cylinder head [0. 1
A substantially squarebearing block 28 is integrally formed with the plug 24 at one end thereof and bears against one end of the cylinder head l0 when the plug 24 is positioned in the end 26 of the cylinder head In.
Suitably fixed in apertures or opening 30 provided in the corners of the block 28, is a pluralityof lugs or pins 32 having outwardly projecting portions 34 that are receivable in recesses or openings provided in the cylinder head to retain the base member 22 relative to the cylinder head and against rotary movement with respect to the cylinder head.
A pair of spaced bores 36 extend through the plug 24 and block 28 and receive bearing sleeves or bushings 38 in a selected one of which there is rotatably and slidably mounted, an operating rod or handle 40 having an enlarged end portion 42. The end portion 42 is transversely apertured and receives the central portion of a hand grip 44 that is conveniently grasped for rotating the operating rod 40.
A block 46 is slidably received on the rod 40 and is provided with a window opening 48 one edge of which supports a pointer 50 that is registerable with indicia or graduations 52 on the rod 40. An adjustable bolt or set screw 54 carried by the block 45 is received in a longitudinal groove or recess 56 provided in the rod 40 to hold the block 46 against rotation relative to the rod 40 and longitudinally adjusted on the rod 40.
In practical use of the present invention, the
,member 58 is inserted into the cylinder head HI and into a selected one of the bearings 16 so that the shaft 60 extends through one of the bearings.
15 and the member 61 is seated in one of the valve seats 26', it being noted that the manner in which the base member is secured to the cylinder head aids this operation for straight movement of the member 58 and rod 40.
By rotating-the rod ii], the member 53 will likewise be rotated to ream the valve seat 20. Obviously, the block 46 will limit the inward movement of the rod 40 and hence the reaming member 58. a
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described andthe scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. For use in association with an air cooled motor of the type having a cylinder head with two valve seats therein; a valve seatreamer comprising a cylindrical member adapted to telescopically enter one end of a cylinder head, a substantially square bearing block integrally formed with one end of said member, said mem- I slidably and rotatably mounted in a selected one of said bushings, a valve seat reaming member engaged with said rod, and collar means mounted on said rod and resting atop said block and embodying means for indicating the sliding movement of said rod for gauging the reaming of a Valve seat by said reaming member.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said centering means includes a lug at each corner of said block and paralleling said cylindrical member, said lugs being situated at equidistant circumferentially spaced points about the periphery of said cylindrical member.
,3. For use in association with an air cooled motor of the type having a cylinder head with two valve seats therein, a valve seat reamer comprising a cylindrical member adapted to telescopically' enter one end of a cylinder head, a
substantially square bearing block integrally formed with one end oifsaid member, said member and said block having a pair of spaced parallel bores extending therethrough, said bores being off center of the member, bushings mountedin said bores, centering means carried by marginal portions of said block and circumferentially spaced about said member for centering the block upon a cylinder head, at least one operating rod slidably and rotatably mounted in a selected one Of said bushings, a valve seat reaming member engaged with said rod, a collar removably mounted on said rod, that portion of said rod with which the collar is associated being flattened longitudinally, a'set screw carried by said collar and engaging the flattened portion of the rod and adjustably associating the collar and rod, said collar resting atop the block and suspending a part of the weight of therod from the block, and indicating means embodied in said collar and coacting with scale graduations provided therefor on said rod.
