This linvention is a further variation of and improvement on the invention in Support Assemblies for Seat Beds shown and described in cop-pending application Serial No. 90,127, now Patent No. 2,576,677.
This invention particularlyrelates to a new and novel means of concurrently operating the supporting legs associated with the device and to new and novel bracing means, both of which may be used in conjunction with an assembly of the type generally shown and described in `the above identied co-pendng application.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a seat bed which operates with superior ease and eiiciency.
A `further object of the invention is to provide a seat bed which includes a support frame assembly comprising a plurality of sections, front and intermediate legs, .1 and leg operating toggle means constructed and arranged to concurrently operate said legs.
A further object of the invention is to provide new and novel leg operating means for a seat bed support assembly.
A further object of the invention is toY provide bracing means adapted in extended position of certain of the sections of the supporting assembly to prevent movement of those sections beyond horizontal co-planar position and further adapted in folded condition ofthe support assembly to serve as a corner brace therefor, limiting relative movement between the sections with which it is associated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a seat bed having a foldable and extendible support assembly which includes new and novel bracing means.
And a further object of the invention is generally to improve the designgconstruction, efflciency, and operation of convertible objects of furniture of the character described.`
The means by which the foregoing and other objects of the present invention are accomplished and the manner of their accomplishment will readily be understood vfrom the following 2 specification upon reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now to the drawings in which the various parts are indicated by numerals, the present invention primarily relates to a convertible frame assembly adapted for use with a relatively fixed seat body Il having in conventional manner suitable side arms and a back portion I3.
The support assembly comprises opposite side frames, each consisting of a plurality of frame members, which side frames are joined at their front and rear ends by transverse members l5, and the support assembly includes a conventional spring web I1 which spans from side to side and end to end of the assembly'and is suitably attached in conventional manner to the side frames and to the transverse end members. The support assembly. is adapted in the extended position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to serve as a bed support. in which position a suitable foldable ymattress I9 is supported thereon. The support is foldable from that extended position to a fully folded seating position (Fig. 5) in which a portion or section of the support assembly is positioned as a support for a suitable, preferably removable seat cushion 2l. The supporting assembly consists of a plurality of sections which are disposed in` substantially horizontal co-planar relation when the support assembly is extended into the illustrated bed position. These sections may be designated as a main end section 23, which forms the front end sectionof the support assembly in bed position, a rear section 25, a main intermediate section 21, hingedly connected at one end to the rear section 25 and having its opposite end Each of the sections includes an opposite pair.
of side frame members and a portion of the spring web l1 which spans between such members. Each of the frame members is preferably formed of a suitable structural member, such as an angle member, and preferably includes in extended position a horizontally disposed lower flange and a vertically disposed outer flange, the attachment of the spring web I1 being preferably made to the lower horizontally disposed flanges of the frame members. As the device includes two substantially identical opposite side frames, each including one frame member from each section, like numerals are employed herein to indicate like parts, and the description will be primarily directed to one of the side frames.
Each side frame includes in section 23 a side frame member 3l, the forward transverse member l5 being rigidly secured to the opposite frame members v3| adjacent the outer ends of the frame members. `To the opposite end of frame member 3|, one end of a side frame member 33 of fold section 29 is hingedly attached, frame member 33 extending rearwardly therefrom and at its opposite end having the forward end of a side frame member 35 of the main intermediate section 21 likewise hingedly attached, and similarly a side frame member 31 of rear section 25 is pivotally attached to the rear end of frame member 35. At the opposite end of frame member 31 an arm 39 is rigidly attached and disposed angularly to the frame member 31, the arm 39 being pivoted in suitable fashion to the chair body H as at 4I. Y Adjacent the forward end of the assembly a front leg de is pivotally attached to side frame member 3| -of section 23 and extends vertically therefrom in bed position of the assembly and is of a length to seat upon the oor or other support surface and thereby effect support of the outer end of the extended assembly. Preferably this point of pivotal attachment of leg 43 to to but above frame member 3|, and is positioned Vto engage mattress I9 to limit lateral movement thereof in bed position. Preferably portion 45 is formed integrally with leg 43, although obviously rthey may be formed separately and rigidly attached in suitable manner as desired.
A bracket l1 is rigidly fixed to frame member v33 of fold section 25, preferably adjacent the pivot between member 33 and end frame member 3l'. Pivoted to bracket 41-is a middle leg 49 which in extended bed position of the device extends vertically below the bracket 41 and is of a length to extend therefrom' to seat upon the door or other support surface so as to afford support 'of' the assembly intermediate the length thereof in extended bed position.
'Pivoted to frame member 3l intermediate its length is one end of a lever 5I, the opposite end of'which'is articulately joined, as at 52, to one end of a second lever`53. The opposite end of llever v53 ris pivoted to frame member 33 as by a -pin 55 adjacent the pivotal attachment between frame member 33 and frame member 35, the pin 55 being preferably provided with an inwardly eX- tending portion 55A, which is of a length to extend inwardly-beyond the vertical flange of member 33 and is arranged to act as a stop as hereinafter described. Y
1t will be seen that the levers 5l, 53 being articulately joined and connected to separate sections of the assembly are enabled to act as a toggle, this action being adapted among other things to effect control of the legs e3, 49. In order to enable the toggle, consisting of levers 5i, 53, to control the movement of front leg 43, a link 51 vis provided which is pivoted atone end to the free rear end of front leg portion 45, at its opposite end pivoted to toggle lever 5l intermediate the length thereof, thereby operatively coupling leg 43 to the toggle. Middle leg 49 is operatively coupled to thevtoggle by a link 59, one end of which is p-ivotally attached to leg 45 intermediate its length and the opposite end is pivoted to toggle lever 53 between pin 55 and joint 52.
Pivoted to frame member 33, preferably slightly forward of the mid point of that member, is one end of a link 6l which extends rearwardly therefrom and is pivotally joined, asat 62, to a. short second link B3, the opposite end of link 63 being pivoted to frame member 35 rearward' of the pivotal attachment between lmember 35 and member 33. When sections 21 and29 are. in coplanar position with members 33 and 35 in substantial alinement the lower edge of link 6l intermediate its length bears against the inwardly projecting stopportion 55A, which lies in the path of movement of link 6I, this engagement limiting downward movement of `link 5 I Rearward of the point of attachment ofA link 53 to frame member 35 the upper and forward end of an elevator arm 65 is pivoted, the elevator bar being turnably carried in suitable fashion by a member, such as plate 61, which is secured to the chair body Il. Preferably a tension 'spring 59 is attached to the elevator bar 55 beyond the attachment of bar 65 to plate 61, spring '69 .being oppositely attached to a suitable member, such as an angle member 1l, which is rigidly fixed to the chair body Il.
When the device has been assembled as above described, it may be folded Vfrom extended bed position through various intermediate positions to the fully folded position indicatedA in Fig. 5, in which each section is positioned substantially perpendicular relative to the adjacent section or sections to which it is connectedi v In accomplishing this foldingl the -main end section 23 -is lifted about its pivotal connection to the fold section 29 and is moved to the positionillustrated in Fig. 3, in which frame members 3| of section 23 are moved to a position substantially at right vangles tothe members y330i fold section 29. As the frame members 3l are moved relative to the frame members 33, the toggle levers 5l, v53 are moved vabout their respective pivotal attachments to the frame members 3l, 33 and are effective-through 'the operative couplings by leg links 51., 59 to concurrently effect the folding of both the front leg 43and middle leg 39.
It will be seen that the vtoggle action of the articulated levers 5|-, 53 through the Ylink 51 is effective to act upon the leg extension 45, mov- -ing that leg extension to a lposition in which it is substantially perpendicular to frame member 3l and moving leg 43 toa position in which it is parallel to frame member3l and lies therealong, with link 51substantially parallel to member 3l and spaced therefrom. Leg 43 when thus folded lies alongside the Aoriginally upper edge of frame member 3l, but does not extend beyond lthe originally lower edge of that frame member due to the oif-center pivotal attachment of the legto member. 3|.
The folding of leg 43 through the action of the toggle levers 5|, 53 on link 59 moves the leg into parallelism with frame member 33 of the fold section,` in which position it is spaced aminor distance from the frame member.
When the device has been moved to the position illustrated in Fig. 3 the entire leg support, previously accomplished by legs 43, 49, is removed through the desired concurrent folding of those legs. At this point, as illustrated in Fig. 7, the bracing links 6|, 63, together with stop member 55A, are effective to maintain frame members 33, 3,5 in horizontal co-planar alinement, the engagement of the lower edge of link 6| with stop 55A preventing downward movement of the lever beyond that point, the short link 63 retaining the pivot point 62 against such movement.
Further folding of the device moves frame `member 33 about its pivotal connection to frame member 35, moving the device to the position illustrated in Fig. 4. As this movement is` accomplished toggle levers 5|, 53 and legs 43, 49 continuein their same positions relative to frame `members 3|, 33 and the two sections 23, 29 are thereafter moved together as a unit. When the device has been moved tothe position of Fig, 4, toggle member 53 is disposed parallel to and lying along the upper edge of frame member 35 in edge `abutment therewith. Toggle lever 5| `is disposed substantially vertically between toggle joint 52 `and frame member 3|, serving to maintain the spacing of frame member 3| from` the toggle joint, and accordingly from frame member 35.
During this movementof sections 23, 29, links 6|, 63 are folded about their pivot62 to the position as illustrated in Fig. 6, in which link 63 lies along` and in edge .abutment with the horizontal flange of frame member 35 and link 6| is disposed diagonally extending from its pivotal attachment to frame member 33 downwardly and rearwardly to ,the pivot 62, effecting a corner bracebetween frame members 33 and 35. Furthermovement of the device accomplishes completion of the movement to the position of Fig. 5, in which movement frame member 35 moves about its pivotal attachment to frame member 31, sections 23, 21, 29 being moved as a unit, tilting upwardly at the forward end and thence downwardly and rearwardly. In this action the elevator bar 65 is swung rearwardly and downwardly guiding and assisting in this movement of the folded sections. Rear frame member 31, together with arm 39 is moved about pivot 4| to the position illustrated in Fig. 5, in which frame member 31 is disposed substantially vertically at the rear of the device. It will be seen that these movements have accomplished the inversion of end section 23 so that the section 23 is disposed as an inverted horizontal section in which the originally under side of the section is disposed uppermost and is positioned to receive and support suitable cushion means 2|.
Fold section 29 is disposed as a front substantially vertical section, and main intermediate section 21 is disposed in a horizontal position low within the seat body underlying and spaced below the upper seat supporting main end section 23.
When in the fully folded position links 6 I, 63 are s link 51, when moved bythe toggle 5|, -53 to posi- 35 cooperating withlever 5| is eiective to accomplish bracing of frame member 3|, preventing movement of that frame member beyond its position substantially perpendicular to frame member 33.
It further will be seen that leg extension 45 and tion leg 43 parallel to frame member 3|, are positioned to engage mattress |9 so as to prevent lateral movement thereof.
When it is desired to extend the device from the fully folded position, shown in Fig. 5, to return toextended bed position, the front of the folded device may. be lifted, moving sections 23, 21, 29 about the pivotal connection between members 35, 31, during which action the movement of the elevator bar 65 is reversed, the arm moving upwardly .and forwardly and being assisted in this movement by spring B9. The device is returned to the `position shown in Fig. 4, in which frame members` 31, 35 are moved into alinement, disposing sections 25, 21 in vco-planar relation.
`Further unfolding movement returns the device tothe position of Fig. `3, moving section 29 into co-planar relation with sections 25, 21 and similarly4 alining frame members 33 with frame members 35, 31. ilhe relative movement to alinement between frame members 33, 35 moves links 6|, 63 to the pOsition Villustrated in Fig. '1 in which the lower edge of link 6| is brought into movement limiting engagement with stop 55A. Inthis manner movement of frame member 33 beyond alinement with frame member 35 is prevented and the engagement between link 6| and stop 55A is effective to retain these` frame members and consequently sections 21, 29 in alined co-planar relation.`
Further unfolding moves section 23 downwardly into alinement with the other sections, this unfolding` movement causing the toggle, consisting loflevers-Sl, 53, acting through links 51, 59, to accomplish concurrent unfolding of legsY 43, 49duringmovement of frame member 3| relative toframe member 33, the movement of frame member 3| through the final arc of ninety degrees beingeifective to accomplish the full unfolding of both legs, disposing them in vertical position to reengage the floor or other sulJDOrt surface and accomplish support of the extended device in bed position.
I claim:
1. In a supportassembly for a seat bed which assembly includes in extended position a plurality `of sections horizontally disposed in coplanar relation, said sections being hingedly `interconnected for relative folding movement between adjacent sections to a folded seating position in which each section is substantially perpendicular to the next adjacent section, and return unfolding movement, a vertical leg pivoted to one of said sections, a second vertical leg pivoted to another said section adjacent the first said section, a toggle comprising a pair of leversarticulately joined, one of said levers being pivotally attached to the first said section and the other of said levers being` pivotally attached to the said adjacent section, a link operative to fold the rst said leg coupling the rst said leg to the first said lever, said link being pivoted to an intermediate portion of said rst leg, and a second link operatively coupling the second said leg to the second said lever, said toggle being effective during said relative folding between said two sections only to concurrently move said legs to a position in which each said leg is in ,it is attached.
2. In a support assembly for a seat bed which assembly comprises in extended position a plurality of sections horizontally disposed -in coplanar relation, said sections being hingedly interconnected for relative folding movement between adjacent sections to a folded seating position in which each section is substantially perpendicular to the next adjacent section, and return unfolding movement, and said sections including an end section forming the forward end of said assembly, and a fold section hinged to said end section, a vertical front leg pivoted to said endfsection, a vertical intermediate leg pivoted to said fold section, a toggle comprising a pair of levers articulately joined, one of said levers being pivotally attached to said end section and the other of said levers being pivotally attached to said fold section, a link operatively coupling said front leg to the first said lever, and a second link operative to fold said intermediate leg coupling said intermediate leg to the second said lever, said second link being pivoted to an intermediate portion ofsaid intermediate leg, said toggle being eifective during said relative folding between said end and fold sections only to concurrently move said legs to a position in which each said leg is in substantial parallelism with the section to which it is attached.
3. In a support assembly for a seat bed which assembly comprises in extended position a plurality of sections horizontally disposed in coplanar relation, said sections being hingedly interconnected for relative folding movement be- I tween adjacent sections to a folded seating position in which each section is substantially perpendicular to the next adjacent section, and return unfolding movement, and said sections including a forward end section and a fold section adjacent and hinged to said end section, a vertical front leg pivoted to said end section, a vertical intermediate leg pivoted to said fold section, a toggle comprising apair of levers articulately joined, one of said levers being pivotally attached to said end section and the other of said levers being pivotally attached 'to said fold section, a rearwardly projecting portion integrated with said front leg and lying above andsubstantially parallel to said end section, a link operatively coupling said portion to the rst said lever, and a second link operative to fold said intermediate leg coupling said intermediate leg to the second said lever, said second link being pivoted to an intermediate portion of said intermediate leg, said toggle being effective during said relative folding between said end and fold sections only to concurrently move said legs to a position in which each said leg is in substantial parallelism with the section to which it is attached.

In a support assemblyfor a seat bed, which assembly comprises a plurality of sections hingedly interconnected for relative folding from extended bed position, in which said sections are disposed in horizontal co-planar relation, to folded seat positionv in which each said section is disposed substantially perpendicular to the adjacent said section, and return unfolding movement, said sections including vin said seat position an upper horizontalseat supporting section, aV lower horizontal section underlying and spaced below said uppersection and a front vertical section extending between said horizontai sections; bracing means which consist of vra 8 link pivoted at one end to said front vertical section and extending diagonally downwardly and rearwardly therefrom, a second link pivoted at its forward end to said lower section and lying along said lower section in edge abutment therewith, the opposite end of the rst said link vbeing pivotally attachedto the rearward end lof said second link to form a diagonal brace limiting relative folding movement between said front vertical section andsaid lower horizontal section, a stop carried by said front vertical section', said return unfolding movement moving' said front vertical and lower horizontal sectionsinto alinement and extending said pivotally joined links, the lower edge -of'said first link abutting said stop in alined condition of the lastmentionedV said sections, to limit unfolding movement of said sections beyond said alinement.
5. In a support assembly for a seat bed, which assembly comprises a plurality of sections hingedly interconnected for relative folding from extended bed position, inwhich said sections are disposed in horizontal co-planar relation, to folded seat position in which each said section is disposed substantially perpendicular to the adjacent said section, and return unfolding movement, said sections including in said seat position an upper horizontal seat supporting section, a lower horizontal section underlying and spaced below said upper section and a front vertical srection extending-between said horizontal sections; bracing means which consist of a link pivoted at one end to said front verticalsection and extending diagonally downwardly and rearwardly therefrom,'a second link pivoted at'its forward end to said lower section and lying along said lower section in edge abutment therewith, the opposite end of the first said link being pivotally attached to the rearward end of said second link to form a diagonal brace limiting v-rel'ative folding movement between said front vertical section and said lower horizontal section, said return unfolding movement moving said front vertical and lowerA horizontal sections into alinement and extending said pivotally joined arms.
6. In a support assembly for a 'seat bed, which assembly comprises a plurality of sections hingedly interconnected for relative lfolding from extended bed position in which said sections are disposed in horizontal coplanar relation, to folded seat position in which each said section is vdisposed substantially perpendicular to the Aadjacent said section, and return unfolding movement, said sections includingin said seat position a vertical section and a lhorizontal section connected thereto; bracing means which consist of a link pivotally attachedto said vertical section and extending from'its said attachment diagonally across the `connection between is effective to limit'relative folding between Said vertical section and said horizontal section Abeyond said perpendicular relation.

9. In a support assembly for a seat bed, which assembly comprises a plurality of sections hingedly interconnected for relative folding movement from extended bed position, to folded seat position, and return unfolding movement, said sections including a front section, a rear section and a pair of sections intermediate said front and rear sections and during saidmovements being shifted to a position in which said intermediate sections are in coplanar alinement; bracing means which include a link pivoted at one end to one of said intermediate sections, a stop carried by said one intermediate section underlying and in abutment with said link intermediate the length of said link in alined condition of said intermediate section, a second link pivoted at one end to the other said intermediate section, the opposite end of said second link being `joined to the opposite end of the rst said link. said links and stop cooperating to limit relative unfolding movement between said alined intermediate sections and maintain said alinement.`
10. In a support assembly for a seat bed, which assembly comprises a plurality of sections including-a front section, a rear section and a pair of adjacent sections intermediate said front and rear sections, said sections being hingedly interconnected for relative folding movement from extended bed position in which said sections are alined,to folded seat position in which each section` is perpendicular to the next adjacent section, and return unfolding movement, said sections during said movements being shifted to a position in which said intermediate sections are in co-planar alinement; bracing means which include a link pivoted at one end to one of said intermediate sections, a stop carried by said one intermediate section underlying and in abutment with said link intermediate the length of said link in alined condition of said intermediate sectionsy a second link pivoted at one end to the other said intermediate section, the opposite end of said secondlink being joined to the opposite end of the `first said link, said links and stop cooperating to limit relative unfolding movement between said alined sections and maintain said alinement, folding. movement to perpendicular relation between said adjacent intermediate sections moving said first link to a position diagonally across the connection between said intermediate sections and said second link to a position in alinement with said other intermediate section, said links in said latter position being effective to limit relative folding movement between said intermediate sections and maintain said perpendicular relation in folded condition of said intermediat sections.

In a support assembly for a seat bed, which assembly is shiftable from and to extended bed position to and from `folded seat position, and includes a pair of connected, adjacent sections, said sections during shift of said assembly being shifted to and` from co-planar alinement, bracing means Vwhich consist of a link pivotally attached to one of said` sections, a second link attachedto the other said section, said links being pivotally joined and means carried by one of said sections engaging one of said links in alinedcondition of said sections, whereby to limit relative unfolding movement between said alined sections.

A support assembly for a seat bed which comprises an end section, a fold section adjacent said end section, an intermediate section, said sections being hingedly interconnected for relative folding and unfolding movements to 'and from bed position, in which said sections are arranged in horizontalA co-planar relation, from and to seating position, in which said end and intermediate sections are horizontal and vertically spaced andsaid fold section is vertical, saidend section during said folding movement being moved to a fold position in which said end section is perpendicular to said fold section and said fold section is co-planar with said intermediate section, said assembly during said unfolding movement being unfolded to aposition corresponding to said fold position, a front leg pivoted to said end section, an intermediateleg pivoted to said adjacent fold section, said legs being perpendiculai to said sections in said bed position, a pair of leversY respectively pivoted to said adjacent end and fold sections and articulately joined to form a toggle, means coupling said front leg to the said leverr pivoted to said end section, means couplingV said intermediate leg to the .other said lever operative to fold said intermediate leg, said coupling means being connected to an intermediate portion of said intermediate leg, said toggle and coupling means being effective during folding movement of said end section to said fold position to vconcurrently retract both said legs into parallelism with said end and fold sections respectively. A support assembly for a seat bed which comprises an endsection, a fold section adjacent said end section, an intermediate section, said sections being hingedly interconnected for relative folding and unfolding movements to and from bed position, in which said sections are arranged in horizontal co-planar relation, from and to seating position, in which said end and intermediate sections are horizontal and vertically spaced and said fold section is vertical, said end section during said folding movement being moved to a fold position in which said end section is perpendicular to said fold section and said fold section is co-planar With said intermediate section, said assembly4 during said unfolding movement being unfolded to a position corresponding to said fold position, a front leg pivoted to said end section, an intermediate leg pivoted to said adjacent fold section, said legs being perpendicular to said sections in said. bed position, a
