May 27, 1952 A. zlURAms ILLUMINATED COMPACT Filed Aug. 19, 1949 INVENTOR.. 4W/:V95 Z KIM/775 ATTORNEYS Patented May 27, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE ILLUMINATED COMPACT Antanas Ziuraitis, Chicago, Ill.
Application August 19, 1949, Serial No. 111,261
(Cl. 24U-6.45)
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in vanity cases, and more particularly and specifically to an illuminated compact which is highly desirable for night use.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of an extremely complete vanity case of a compact size which is provided with means for selectively illuminating the interior of the case when the case is opened.
Another important feature of the present invention lies in the interior arrangement of the compact which increases the efficiency and the desirability of the case. Further, the particular arrangement of the herein described compact permits the increased mirror space included therein which is a highly desired factor in small compacts.
Still another and most salient feature of the present invention lies in the provision of an illuminated compact which is of an extremely durable and inexpensive design and construction.
Further improvements and advantages of the instant invention will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art when the following description is read in the light of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the compact in an open condition;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the compact in a closed condition;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the battery switch and bulb;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the battery switch and bulb with an alternate switch position being shown in dotted line Figure 5 is a side elevation of the bulb and switch with parts broken away for clearer illustration.
Referring now with particularity to the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views, A designates a vanity case including two sections I and 2 hinged along their joining edges at 3.
Section I of the case includes a back member Ill having perpendicularly-flanged walls I I thereabout. \Section 2 of the case is similarly formed having a back member I2 and three perpendicularly-flanged walls I3, while one side of the back member is without a wall. This fourth side of the section 2 terminates in a flush edge having a hinge pin I4 extending therealong, and this pin is revolubly secured in a tubular hinge I5 formed longitudinally of the edge of one wall of the section I. In addition, the walls of section 2 are of sumcient lesser periphery than the walls of section I so that section 2 will telescope within section I when the case is closed about the hinge. Further, these side walls I3 of section 2 immediately adjacent the hinge are cut down for a spaced distance therealong, thus dening stepped shoulders I6 therein intermediate the length of the walls.
The case section I is provided on the inner face of the back member I0 with a mirror 20 which extends from the end edge of the back member I0 remote from the joined edges 3 of the sections I and 2 to a point spaced from the other end edge of the back member I0. Between the mirror 20 and the joined edges, and immediately adjacent the mirror, a shelf-like projection 2| extends laterally across the inner face of the back member Ill.
Between the side walls of the case section I, and spaced from, but parallel to, the back member I 9 is a second projection 22 which terminates adjacent one side wall in an arcuate end portion 23. Disposed between this projection 22 and the back member I is a dry cell 24 which is provided with a contact point 25 adjacent the arcuate portion of the projection 22. Secured within the arcuate portion 23 of the projection 22 is a bulb socket 26 of the ashlight type which contains a bulb 2'I which extends parallel to the back member and spaced therefrom.
A single-throw switch 30 is pivoted centrally beneath and in contact with the bulb socket. The throw switch is provided with one arm portion 3| extending outwardly from the pivot 32 beneath the projection 22 to terminate in a linger piece 33. The second arm 34 of the switch 30 extends from the pivot 32 substantially oppositely from the arm 3l, where it terminates in a contact tip 35 which projects upwardly into a plane common with the dry cell contact 25 so that rotation of the finger piece 32 in one direction will cause the contact tip 35 to come into abutment with the dry cell contact 25 completing the circuit to the bulb 2l.
The back member Ill of the case section I is provided with a pair of arcuate indentations 40 and 4I which extend in parallelism with each other and traverse the inner face of the back member between the projecting ledge 2| and the end wall carrying the tubular hinge piece I5. These indentations receive the dry cell 24, which rests in the indentation 40 immediately adjacent the end wall, and a lipstick case 50, which rests in the indentation 4I immediately adjacent the ledge 2I.
The inner face of the case section 2 is divided into two laterally-divided portions. That portion of the inner face immediately adjacent the hinge pin I4 and extending to the stepped shoulder i6 in the side walls is provided with a second mirror 60. The remaining portion extending to the end wall is provided with a covered powder receptacle 6I which is disposed to permit a puff 62 to be carried on the upper face thereof. i
Those ends of the two case sections remote from the hinge are provided each with complementary members 10 and 'll of a snap-type lock which retains the compact in a closed position.
The foregoing completes the description of this invention and which I claim, as follows:
An illuminated compact comprising a case including two sections arranged in face tov face relationship and connected together at one end for movement into and out of engagement with each other, a mirror disposed within and abutting one of said sections and extending longitudinally thereof from the other end thereof toy a point adjacent to and spaced from said one end thereof, a dry cell and light unit disposed within the space in said one section and supported therein, said unit comprising an electrically conductive partition extending inwardly from the end wall of said one section adjacent thereto in spaced parallel relation with respect to the back wall of said one section, the portion of the back wall adjacent said partition being bent arcuately outwardly to thereby form an arcuate indentation extending transversely of said one section, said partition and arcuate indentation cooperating to form a housing, an
open ended bulb receptacle base carried adjacent one end of said partition with one end thereof disposed in spaced relation with respect to said end wall of said one section, a bulb extending through the other open end of said receptacle and supported therein, a dry cell embracingly received and supported Within said housing with the central contact thereof positioned adjacent said base receptacle and the outer contact thereof bearing against said conductive partition, hand actuable means rotatably journaled on the central contact of said bulb and engageable with the central contact of said dry cell for completing the electrical circuit for said unit, a powder containing receptacle disposed within the other of said sections and supported in the latter, interengaging means on said sections for securing the same together, and a lipstick case disposed within said one section intermediate said mirror and said dry cell and light unit and detachably supported therebetween.
