Description

The wire I I may be wound in any desired fashion such as criss-cross, level layer wound, honeycomb," etc., the particular winding'process not being a part of the present invention.
After the coil of wire is wound to its desired size, a first layer 29 of double coated tape (that is,
tape which is provided with adhesive, so as to be tacky, on both surfaces) is wound about the entire cylindrical surface of the coil of wire. The tackiness of the surface of the tape facing the outer layer of wire of the coil, is of such a degree of adhesiveness as to retain or hold the outer layer of wire in position, but at the same time permit the said outer layer of wire to be drawn off from the layer of tape when desired during the payout operation. The tabs or fingers 2| of one of the end members [5 are then bent inwardly over said first tape layer 29 to forma second layer 30. At the time of the positioning of the tabs 2| as set forth, in forming layer 30, one of said tabs is first threaded through a D- shaped metalring 3| for the purposes hereinafter comprising two end members at least one of said setforth. If desired, several such rings 3| may be positioned at various points about the periphery of the package. T a
A third layer 33'of double coated tape is then wound over said second layer 30 (of tabs 2 l) and the exposedportions of the first tape layer 29. The next step in the fabrication of a package is to fold or bend the tabs 2| of the other end member l5 to form a fourth layer 34 over .the third layer 33 (of tape). There is then wound a fifth layer 35, also of double coated tape, over the fourth layer 34 and the exposed portions of the third layer 33.
While in Figurel of the drawing the tabs or fingers 2| ofone of the end members l5 are shown as'slightly spaced from the tabs of the other end member, for purposes of clarity, it has been found that in the actual assembly of the package, the best results are secured when the tabs are'of such width-and are so oriented that the tabs of the two end members interdigitate with each other though separated by the third tape layer 33. Thus it is seen that the two sets of tabs 2|, so interdigitated, form a sheath of canvas (or other like strong flexible material) encircling the lateral surface of the coil of wire. Part of said canvas sheath is between the first and third layers 29, 33. and the balance of said canvas sheath is between said third and fifth layers 33, 35.
It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the shape and number of tabs as shown in the drawing, as it may be desired to have the tabs 2| of each end member l5 so close to each other that said tabs form a complete rather than a partial covering when folded over the lateral surface of the coil. v V 1 The package is then completed by applying a sixth layer 31 of single coated tape (which is tape that is tacky only on the inwardly facing surface) completely about the fifth layer 35. It is obvious, that in applying the tape-of the aforementioned layers, said tape willby-pass the D-shaped ring 3| or rings. The rings serve as a means for supporting the package when it is desired, as during the payout operation.
While there has been described in the. specific embodiment a series of. sequential steps in the assembly of the package, it is obvious that variations in the assembly can be made. For example, the tab layers can first be applied .to the-outer lateral surface of the coils and then a single or plurality of tape layers can be wound or other members having a central opening, each of said membersincluding abody portion having an outside diameter substantially equal to that of said coil and having a plurality of radially disposed tabs about the circumference of said body portion, and first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth layers disposed successively about the outer lateral surface of said coil, said :first layer being of tape and covering, the outer lateral suri face of said coil, said second layer comprising the tabs of one of said end members and at least partially covering said first layer, said third layer being of tape and covering said second layer and'any'exposed portions of said first layer, said fourth layer comprising the tabs of the other of said endmembers and at least partially cover.-
ing said third layer, said'fifth layer being of tape,
and covering said fourth layer and any exposed portions of said third layer, and said sixth layer. being of tape andcovering said fifth layer.
2. A package of the type described in claiml which includes means forsuspending said pack- 1 age, said means including a ring and one tab of each of said-end members, said two tabs extendameter of said coil and having a plurality of radially disposed tabs about the circumference of 1 said body portion, said tabs extending over the outer lateral surface or said coil, and. a side member which covers the lateral surface of said coil and grips said tabs.
5. A package, for a coil of strand material, comprising two end members, each of said end members including a circular body portion having an outside diameter substantially equal to the diameter of said coil and having a plurality of radially disposed tabs about the circumference of said body portion, and a lateral member, said lateral member including av plurality of layers about the lateral surface of said coil, said layers includingat least onelayer comprising a plu-' rality of turns of tape and said layers gripping saidtabs.
6. The method of. forming a packaged, hollow center coil of strand material, comprising the steps of winding said strand material upon a mandrel between two end members to form a coil of said material, each of said end members-comprising a substantially, circular body having-a payout openingtherein and a plurality of radially disposed tabsextending from the circumference thereof, wrapping a first layer of. tape.
over the outer lateral surface of said coil, bending the tabs of one of said end members over said first layer to form a second layer, wrapping a third layer of tape over said first and second layers, bending the tabs of the other of said end members over said third layer to form a fourth layer, wrapping a fifth layer of tape over said third and fourth layers and wrapping a sixth layer of tape over said fifth layer.
7. The method of forming a packaged coil of strand material, comprising the steps of winding said strand material on a mandrel between two end members to form a coil of said material, each of said end members comprising a substantially circular body and a plurality of radially disposed tabs extending from the circumference thereof, bending said tabs over the outer lateral surface of said coil and applying at least one tape layer over said tabs.
8. The method of forming a packaged coil of 2 strand material comprising the steps of winding said material upon a mandrel between two end members to form a coil of said material, each of said end members comprising a substantially circular body of a diameter substantially equal to that of said coil and an extending portion, wrapping a first layer of tape over the lateral surface of said coil, bending said extended portion of one of said end members over said first layer to form a second layer, wrapping a third layer over said first and second layers, bending the other of said etxended portions over said third layer to form a fourth layer and applying at least one additional layer over said fourth layer.
