Patented May 13, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE AUTOMATIC HYDRAULIC DUPLICATING MACHINE This invention relates to stamping, shaping, and duplicating machines wherein material is shaped and out between male and female dies actuated by hydraulic means, and in particular a machine wherein a male die is suspended above a stationary female die and operated by a plurality of pistons through a vertical movement to operative position in the female die and then through a substantially lateral movement to cut or form material between the dies.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a substantially automatic and continuously operating machine for duplicating machine parts and the like which combines a plurality of operations.
In the usual die stamping machine one die travels vertically downward over or into the other and the material is cut or shaped thereby. However, in modern manufacturing methods where, as an illustration, it is desired to press the shell of a radio cabinet and form openings for the knobs and dials in the front and also in the sides in a single operation, it is desired to combine vertical and lateral movements in substantially a single operation. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a stamping machine wherein fluid from a common source first moves a die to one position and then forces one or a plurality of dies to travel outward from the first die to cut openings in the side walls of a form or to form bosses, ribs, and the like therein.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a die stamping machine wherein the male die includes a plurality of auxiliary dies adapted to operate perpendicular or at different angles to the axis thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for actuating auxiliary dies from a main die wherein the same fluid is used for both.
Another object of the invention is to provide die actuating hydraulic cylinders wherein a small cylinder is incorporated in a main cylinder or piston and connected by suitable passages to a common fluid supply means so that after the main cylinder has completed its movement, the small cylinder actuates auxiliary dies for forming openings, bosses, ribs, and the like in walls of material shaped by a die actuated by the main cylinder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination forming die having main and auxiliary die members which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the new and useful combination, construction, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described, set
forth in the claimsv appended hereto, and disclosed in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing a front elevation of the duplicating machine with the male die block elevated.
Figure 2 is a view showing a side elevation of the machine with the male die block elevated.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the machine taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section similar to that shown in Figure 3 showing the male die lowered into the female die block.
Figure 5 is a detail illustrating a modification wherein a section is shown through a male die having a plurality of opposed auxiliary cylinders for actuating laterally positioned dies.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the automatic hydraulic duplicating machine of this invention includes a male die block [0 suspended from the end of a male die carrying piston ll in a main cylinder l2 with auxiliary die actuating pistons I3 having male dies on the ends thereof in laterally disposed cylinders 14, female dies Is in a block I6, a pump ll, and a motor [8.
The female die block is illustrated as supported on a stand l9 and it will be understood that the cylinder I2, pump, motor, and other parts may be supported by any suitable means.
The block In is provided with a recess 20 into which the lower end of the piston H extends and the block is attached to the end of the piston by screws 2|. In the design shown in Figures 1 to 4, a male die formed with a plate 22 and a protruding section 23 is secured to the under surface of the block Ill by screws 24, and the cylinders M with the pistons l3 therein are provided in inclined positions therein. Dies 25 are carried by the ends of the pistons and the pistons are provided with stems 26 that extend through the inner ends 21 of the cylinders and into sockets 28 in which springs 29 are provided around the stems to form cushioning means for the dies. The inner ends of the stems are provided with washers 30 that are held by 'nuts 3| and the upper ends of the springs bear against the washers.
The female dies (5 are shaped to receive the male dies, and in the design shown the female dies are provided with a flange 32 which is mounted on the block It by screws 33, and a sloping surface 34 with recesses 35 therein for receiving the cutting teeth 36 of the dies 25. The die block 16 is mounted on a plate 3'! having tongues 38 therein that slide in grooves 39 in the block, and the position on the block may be adjusted by a screw 40 with a crank 4| on the outer end and threaded into a lug 42 extending downward from the block.
In operation, the material to be shaped and cut is placed over the female dies in the lower section and the pump or other constant speed power source is started which pumps fluid from a reservoir 43 in the upper end of the cylinder. 12. through a port or supply opening 44 into. theupper end of the cylinder 12 above the piston ll through a port 45, and pressure in the cylinder forces the piston with the male block thereon downward until it arrives at the position shown in Figure 4. At this point the upper end of theiston enters a bypass recess 46 which provides means by which the fluid passes into a passage 41 which communicates with an inner cylinder 48 in the end of the piston I I, and the fluidpassing into the cylinder 43 forces a floating piston 49 therein downward causing fluid in the lower end' thereof to pass downward througlra passage 50 into the cylinders I4 whereby the pistons [3 are actuated to drive the dies 25 against the die surfaces 34 or teeth 3.5. The springs 29 provide cushioning means to soften the blow; and the piston. H is also providedwith a stem -l'* that extends upward through the upper end of the cylinder so that cushioning means may be provided for the piston H at each end of the stroke.
As the piston 49 reaches the lower. end of its stroke a passage 52 is opened, which has formerly been closed by the piston, and the fluid then passes back to the pump l1 through a return opening 53. The fluid pressure then reverses the pump I! causing the pump to draw fluid from the cylinder l2 and pump it back into reservoir 43. The pump I1 is provided with a reversing valve such as the change over valve I20 illustrated in Patent No. 2,197,428. The vacuum action with the aid of the springs 29 withdraws the pistons 13, and also the piston 49, and. as the pump continues the piston H with the male die. and block are elevated to the position shown in Figures 1 and 3. At this time the block In strikes the trip 54 and stops or again reverses the pump so that another cycle may be started.
In the design shown in Figure 5, the block H! is provided with forming dies 55 and 56 having opposed pistons 5'! and 56 therein with dies 58 and 60 on the pistons, respectively, and the pistons are mounted in cylinders GI and 62 which are connected by passages 63 and 64 to a passage 65 similar to the passage 59 in the lower end of the piston II. The dies 55 and 53 are secured together by a bolt 65 and are mounted on the block by screws 6?. It will be understood that dies are forming elements of any suitable type or design may be provided in the machine.
It will be understood that other modifications may be made in the design or arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a hydraulic stamping die, the combination which comprises a main cylinder having spaced supply and return openings through the wall thereof and a by-pass recess in the inner surface of the wall, a male die-carrying piston having an inner cylinder in an extended end thereof positioned in the said maincylinder, a floating piston positioned in the said inner cylinder of the male die-carrying piston, a laterally disposed cylinder carried by the said male diecarrying piston, a die actuating piston having a male die on the end thereof positioned in the said laterally disposed cylinder, means limiting the travel of the said die-actuating piston, and a female die positioned to coact with the said male die of the piston in the laterally disposed cylinder, said laterally disposed cylinder having a passage extended into the said inner cylinder through which fluid is forced by the floating piston to actuate the said die carrying piston, the supply opening through the wall of the main cylinder being positioned beyond the inner end of; the piston therein and the return opening being spaced from the end of the cylinder from which thepiston extends, said male die-carrying piston having a supply passage therein extended from; the. inneryend of the said inner cylinder to a point positionedto register with the said bypass recess in the inner surface of the main cylinder wall, and a return passage extended from a point midway offthe length of the inner cylinder; to apointin the. wall of the piston positioned to. register with the. said return opening in-the. main. cylinder wall With the said male diecarrying piston extendedv whereby fluid under pressure. supplied to the main cylinder through the: supply opening drives, the male die-carrying piston to an extended position and into the female. die and upon reaching said extended position the fluidforced by the floating piston drives the piston of the laterally disposed cylinder to force the male die into operative relation with the female die.

3. In a hydraulic stamping die, the combination which comprises a main cylinder having spaced supply and return openings through the wall thereof and a by-pass recess in the inner surface of the wall, a fluid reservoir mounted on the said main cylinder, a pump mounted in combination with the said main cylinder having a discharge connection extended to the supply opening of the main cylinder, an intake connection extended through the return opening of the main cylinder and a supply connection extended to the said reservoir, a male die-carrying piston having an inner cylinder in an extended end thereof positioned in the said main cylinder, a floating piston positioned in the said inner cylinder of the male die-carrying piston, a laterally disposed cylinder carried by the said male die-carrying piston, a die actuating piston having a male die on the end thereof positioned in the said laterally disposed cylinder, means limiting the travel of the said die-actuating piston, and a female die positioned to coact with the said male die of the piston in the, laterally disposed cylinder, said laterally disposed cylinder having a passage extended into the said inner cylinder through which fluid is forced by the floating piston to actuate the said die-carrying piston, the supply opening through the wall of the main cylinder being positioned beyond the inner end of the piston therein and the return opening being spaced from the end of the cylinder from which the piston extends, said male die-carrying piston having a supply passage therein extended from the inner end of the said inner cylinder to a point positioned to register with the said by-pass recess in the enner surface of the main cylinder wall, and a return passage extended from a point midway of the length of the inner cylinder to a point in the wall of the piston positioned to register with the said return opening in the main cylinder wall with the said male die-carrying piston extended whereby fluid under pressure supplied to the main cylinder through the supply opening drives the male die-carrying piston to an extended positioned and into the female die and upon reaching said extended position the fluid forced by the floating piston drives the piston of the laterally disposed cylinder to force the male die into operative relation with the female die.
4. In a hydraulic stamping die, the combination which comprises a main cylinder having spaced supply and return openings through the wall thereof and a by-pass recess in the inner surface of the wall, a fluid reservoir mounted on the said main cylinder, a pump mounted in combination with the said main cylinder having a discharge connection extended to the supply opening of the main cylinder, an intake connection extended through the return opening of the main cylinder and a supply connection extended to the said reservoir, a male die-carrying piston having an inner cylinder in an extended end thereof positioned in the said main cylinder, a floating piston positioned in the said inner cylinder of the male die-carrying piston, a laterally disposed cylinder carried by the said male die-carrying piston, a die actuating piston having a male die on the end thereof positioned in the said laterally disposed cylinder, means limiting the travel of the said die-actuating piston, a female die positioned to coact with the said male die of the piston in the laterally disposed cylinder, said laterally disposed cylinder having a passage extended into the said inner cylinder through which fluid is forced by the floating piston to actuate the said die-carrying piston, a supply opening through the wall of the main cylinder being positioned beyond the inner end of the piston therein and the return opening being spaced from the end of the cylinder from which the piston extends, said male die-carrying piston having a supply passage therein extended from the inner end of the said inner end of the said inner cylinder to a point positioned to register with the said by-pass recess in the inner surface of the main cylinder wall, and a return passage extended from a point midway of the length of the inner cylinder to a point in the wall of the piston positioned to register with the said return opening in the main cylinder wall with the said male die-carrying piston extended whereby fluid under pressure supplied to the main cylinder through the supply opening drives the male die-carrying piston to an extended position and into the female die and upon reaching said extended position the fluid forced by the floating piston drives the piston of the laterally disposed cylinder to force the male die into operative relation with the female die, means reversing the said pump to retract the male die-carrying and die-actuating piston upon completion of the stamping opera- I tion, and means stopping the pump upon completion of the retracting travel of the said male die-carrying piston.
