Description

WRISTWATCH PROTECTOR Filed April 26, 1948 Fig.
Frederick J Bro wn INVENTOR.
W Attorney:
Patented May 6, 1952 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE WRIST WATCH PROTECTOR Frederick J. Brown, Tampa, Fla. Application April 26, 1948, Serial No. 23,229
4 Claims. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in wrist watch protectors, and the principal object of the invention is to guard the case, crown, pintle lugs, etc. of a wrist watch from the harmful effects of perspiration and also, to protect the wrist of the user against uncomfortable pressure of the metallic watch case.
This object is achieved by the provision of a protective shield, preferably constructed from molded rubber or phenolic plastic material, this shield being receivable between the wrist and the watch in such manner that the watch case, crown and pintle lugs are prevented from coming in actual contact with the wrist and similarly, that perspiration from the wrist is prevented from gaining access to the watch.
An important feature of the invention lies in its simplicity of construction, in its pleasing appearance, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in View and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the construction and arrangement of parts as shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a top plan View of a wrist watch showing the invention in association therewith;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the subject shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the invention per se;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 44 in Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 5-5 in Figure 3.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a protector designated generally by the reference character ID, the same being intended for use in association with a conventional wrist Watch I 2 including a case M, a crown l6 and pairs of lugs l8 retaining the usual pintles (not shown) used for connecting the half-portions 20 of the watch strap to the case.
The protector l0 embodies in its construction a shield 22 formed from molded rubber, phenolic plastic, or a similar non-metallic material, this shield being intended for positioning adjacent 2 the back of the watch case it and conforming substantially to the marginal contour thereof, substantially as shown.
The shield 22 is provided with upturned marginal flanges 25, 26, which are engageable with the side edges of the watch case, and it is to be noted that one of the flanges 25 is outwardly cli'set as at 28, so as to provide what may be referred to as a recess 30 in which the aforementioned crown H5 is partially receivable.
It is to be noted that a portion of the crown projects from the recess 36, so as to facilitate winding of the watch Without removing the same from the protector.
Moreover, the end portions of the shield 22 are recessed from pairs of flanged pockets 34 to receive the pintle retaining lugs l8 of the watch case, as well as the end portions of the straps 2%. which enclose the pintles and extend into the body of the shield through transverse openings or notches til which are formed between each pair of the pockets 35, substantially as shown. The bottom surfaces of the notches 36 are provided with raised ribs 3% which constitute abutments for the pintle ends of the Watch strap 2%, the pintles connecting the strap to the watch being indicated at 29.
It is to be noted that by virtue of this construction, the protector Ifl will effectively prevent the wrist watch from coming in actual contact with the wrist of the user, and similarly, perspiration from the wrist will be prevented from gaining access to the watch. Needless to say, the protector may assume different configurations in accordance with the particular watches with which it is to be used, and may be manufactured in a variety of different materials and in different colors, so as to suit the particular taste of the prospective purchaser.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what claimed as new is:
1. A wrist watch protector comprising a body having a lower wall and upstanding side walls on said lower wall contoured complementary to the sides of a watch, said side walls having extensions thereon adapted to overlie the external surface of a watch strap mounting lug, said lower wall having a. transverse extension thereon secured to said side wall extensions and adapted to underlie the pintle-receiving end of a watch strap to support and strengthen said side wall extensions, said extension on said lower wall having a transversely extending concave recess therein adapted to snugly contact the undersurface of the pintle receiving end of a watch strap to restrict the entrance of moistiue between the lower wall and the watch.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said lower wall has an elongated central portion, a rib rising from the central portion of said extension and constituting an abutment for the pintle end of a watch strap.
3. In a Watch having pintle support lugs ex tending from one end thereof, a Watch strap and a pintle extending through one end of said strap and attached between said lugs; a watch protector comprising a body having a lower wall and upstanding side walls on said lower wall contoured complementary to the sides of said watch, said side walls having extensions thereon overlying the outwardly facing sides of said lugs, said lower wall having a transverse extension thereon secured to said side wall extensions and underlying the pintle receiving end of said watch strap to strengthen and support said side wall extensions.
4. The combination of claim 3 wherein said extension on said lower wall has a transversely extending concave recess therein, said recess snugly contacting the undersurface of the pintle receiving end of the watch strap to restrict the entrance of moisture to the back of the watch.
