This invention relates to an improvement in fluid motors and more particularly to the construction thereof.
Heretofore numerous fluid motors have been designed with complicated members and intricate valve mechanism that make the-m inefficient and too expensive to build.
An object of the present improved invention is to provide an economical design having a ring plate with an annular channel shaped ring, the annular channel shaped ring opening toward, and being closed by, the ring plate, the ring plate being provided with intake and outlet ports, valves fulcrumed on the ring plate to open and close and inlet ports, the valves when opened dividing the annular channel shaped ring into sections or compartments, fluid impeller ribs or vanes dividing the annular channel shaped ring into sections or compartments, and cam arms on the valve fulcrum members actuated by cams on the rotatable channel shaped ring to close the valves on the intake ports when the ribs or vanes pass over the intake ports, the valves being normally opened by fluid pressure.
Another object of the present improved invention is to provide an annular channel shaped ring member opening toward a flat ring member and being closed thereby, fluid impeller vanes, an inlet port, an outlet port, the ports being in the flat ring member, a cam mounted on the annular channel shaped ring member to close the inlet valves, the inlet valves being normally opened from pressure from the fluid flowing through the inlet port and the annular channel shaped ring member being rotatable on the flat ring member by fluid pressure.
Another object of the present improved invention is to relieve shocks between the rotating shaft and the annular channel shaped ring member by having resilient spring members to form spokes from a hub on the shaft to the annular channel shaped ring member.
Another object of the present improved invention is to provide a fluid motor with few wearing parts, the valve being hinged to the fiat ring member to swing into the channel shaped member without rubbing the walls thereof and acting as a head to propel ribs or vanes transversely arranged in the annular channel shaped ring member, the clearances of the parts being very small.
Another object of the present improved invention is to provide a cam member on a ring member to actuate the inlet valve to a rotatable impeller.
3 Claims. (Cl. 121-78) With these objects in view the invention will be more fully understood from the accompanyingV drawing, the following specification and the scope of the appended claims.

Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the annular channel shaped ring with the inlet valves projected therein and the cam and an impeller vane approaching the inlet valve.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view similar to 'Figure '3 with the exception that the cam has passed over the inlet valve cam lever and closed the inlet valve against the inlet port, the transverse impeller rib in the annular ring being illustrated near the rear end of the cam for different valve timing.
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating other channel shapes for the annular ring member than that shown in Figure 2, one channel being superimposed on the other channel.
The annular channel shaped ring member 6 has an outside flange 'I rotatably fitted in at ring 8 and inside flange 9 tted into at ring 8 at Ill. An outside ring I I holds flange 'I against flat ring 8 with bolts I2 and an inside ring I3 holds inside flange 9 against ring 3 with bolts I4. The annular channel shaped ring member 6. is provided with transverse impeller vanes or ribs I5, the ribs or vanes I5 dividing the channel shaped ring member 6 into compartments or segments I6. The ribs or vanes I5 have their outer edges extended to just clear flat ring member 8.
A pair of fiat inlet valves I'I have the same shape as the transverse inside section of the annular channel shaped ring member and are hinged on pins I8 by hubs I9, the pins I8 being held in recesses between at ring 8 and flange 20 held together by bolts I2 and 2l. The clearance of the flat valve I'I is very small when in the channel 5 and the inlet port 22 is formed by inlet manifold 23. Adjacent the inlet manifold 23 is exhaust manifold 24 with outlet ports 25 formed thereby.
A shaft 26 is provided with a hub 21 mounted thereon and is provided with recesses 28 to receive resilient spring arms 29 to act as spokes having their outer ends recessed in lugs 35. The lugs 30 are preferably integral with the back side of the channel shaped ring member 6. Cap members 3I hold the resilient spring spoke members 29 in position by bolts 32.
The annular channel shaped ring member 6 is provided with cam members 33 preferably integral on the outer flange 'I to actuate the cam levers 34 mounted on inlet valve shaft I8. The valve lever 34 is rigid on the valve shaft I8 and the valve I'I is integral with hub I9 rigidly mounted on the shaft I8 for actuation thereof.
A roller bearing 35 is mounted in the hub 35 and supports the shaft 26, the hub being connected to the fiat ring member 8 by bolts I4.
The improved fluid motor is designed to work with various types of liquid or gas pressure and two forms of timing on the cams for operating the inlet valves are illustrated to show that a variation is necessary for different forms of liquid and a wide range of speeds, the design of the cam or length thereof being made to suit the requirement of the application of the motor.
When it is desired to operate the motor a fluid under pressure is passed through each port 22 of an intake manifold 23 and normally opens the inlet valve hinged on hinge pin I8 to a vertical position where it is stopped by vertical lug '37. The fluid passes from the raised valve through the annular channel shaped ring member to the transverse impeller vane or rib I 5, the uid pressure moving impeller vane or rib I and annular channel shaped ring member for rotation on shaft 26 through resilient spring spoke members 29. As the impeller vane or rib approaches the outlet port 25 in exhaust manifold 24 the fluid pressure in the annular channel shaped ring member decreases and the inlet valve is easily closed by the cam 33 as it passes over the cam lever 34 thus closing the inlet port and allowing the impeller rib or vane to pass over the valve when closed. A single or plurality of ports, vanes and valves may be used according to requirements of size and horse power.
The resilient spring arms will take care of shock loads between the shaft and impeller vanes I5 'and the channel shaped member may be made with other shapes than that shown in Figure 2 and Figure 5, the channel shape being varied if desired without departure from the present invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A fluid motor comprising a iiat ring member, an annular channel shaped ring member, said annular channel shaped ring member havlng the open side of the channel shaped portion thereof closed by said fiat ring member, an inlet port, an outlet port, said ports being in said flat ring member, a fiat valve, a cam, said cam being on said annular channel shaped ring member, said flat valve being hinged to said fiat ring member for closing said inlet port when said cam passes over said valve, impeller ribs, said impeller ribs being transverse on and dividing said annular channel shaped ring member into compartments, said inlet valve being closed by said cam when one of said impeller ribs passes over said valve, and said annular shaped ring member being revolvable against said flat ring member.

A fluid motor comprising a flat ring member, an annular channel shaped ring member, said annular channel shaped ring member having the open side of the channel shaped portion thereof closed by said fiat ring member, an inlet port, an outlet port. said ports being in said lia-t ring member, a flat valve, a cam, said cam being on said annular channel shaped ring member, said flat valve being connected to said at ring member for closing said inlet port when said cam passes over said valve, vanes, said vanes being transverse on and dividing said annular channel shaped ring member into compartments, said inlet valve being closed by said cam when one of said ribs passes over said valve, and said annular shaped ring member being revolvable against said fiat ring member by a iiuid pressure.

A fluid motor comprising a flat ring member, an annular channel shaped ring member, said annular channel shaped ring member tted against said fiat ring member, said channel shaped ring member having the channel shape portion thereof opening toward said fiat ring member, said flat ring member closing the open side of said annular channel shaped ring member, inlet ports, outlet ports, said ports being in said flat ring member, inlet valves, said inlet valves being hinged on said flat ring member, said valves closing said inlet ports when in the closed position, said inlet valves dividing said annular. channel shaped ring member into compartments when in the opened position, ribs, said ribs dividing said annular channel shaped ring member into compartments,- said valves closed on said inlet ports when said ribs pass over said intake ports, and said annular channel shaped ring member being fulcrumed to rotate on said flat ring member.
