REVERSIBLE ROTARY PUMP Filed Jan. 1o, 1929 Patented Mar. 22, i932 nasales? 'iJNiTEDg 's'rArEs PATENT oFFlcs AMANDUS C. ROESSLER, OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO,

BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION F OHIOv REVERSIBLE ROTARY PUMP Application ihled January 10, 1929. Serial No. 331,445.
which isautomatic in operation, simple in through the construction and sure in its operation.
With these and otherobjects in view the inventionv consists in the various novel .features of construction and combination of f' parts, all of `which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of the pump with the valve member in the position it takes when the piston is rotating counterclockwise; Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the position of the valve when the piston'is being rotated clockwise; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view Describing by reference characters the various parts of the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, A indicates the pump casing with suction or inlet port E and outletcport Fon the exhaust or pressure side of the rotor B. The interior of the casing A is cylindrically bored. Snugly tted in said cylindrical bore is a cylindrical valve member D. The valve member D is provided on its periphery with a groove H which extends slightly more than half way around the same, and into which projects a lug G on thecasing member constituting a stop to limit the rotation of the -member D in the casing. The valve member D is provided With an eccentrically disposed piston chamber I in which the rotor B and reciprocating piston blade C rotate. It will be noted that the rotor B and valve member D have the same axis of rotation. The blade C of the pump is provided with the usual packing strips J closely fitting the interior wall of the chamber I.
The particular conwall of the chamber- 'uration of the interior and the construction pump on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.V
of the piston blade C is not material to the operation of the reversing valve -D so long as the rotor B has the same axis of rotation as the valve D.
The valve member D has ports M and N Which communicate with` the ports E and F -in the casing. As will be noted the ports M and N are so arranged in the valve member D that in the rotation 'of the piston the one operating as the inlet port is'closed before the port operating as the discharge. port is opened. A sufficient pressure is exerted in this manner as the piston rotates to carry the member D either to the right or left until the end of the groove H engages the pin G, and the fluid will then be expelled at F. Upon reversing the direction of the. rotor B the reverse movement' of the valve member D takes place.
When the valve D isvin the position shown in Fig. 1 the piston is traveling in a counterclockwise direction, as the piston blade passes the left hand port M, the Huid sucked into the lower part of the cylinder I is expelled at N, and so on. With the rotation of the piston in the clockwise direction the valve member is positioned as shown in Fig. 2, and the rotaition of the piston C againsucks the fluid in through the port E and expels the same at F.
It is( apparent that in either direction of the piston the suction or intake side is at E whIirle the pressure or exhaust side is always at t Itis obvious that the rotary valve D may be rotated mechanically by suitable means passing through thc wall of the casing A, which means may be operated either by hand or by suitable connections with thefmachine with which the pump is operated.
While I have shown only one embodiment of my invention, it is understood that various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what vI'claim is:
l. In a reversible pump, the combination of a casin having a cylindrical bore with intake an exhaust ports communicating therewith, and a cylindrical valve member of said piston being the same as the axis of' rotation of said valve member, said valve member being provided on its periphery7 with a groove. an inwardly extending lug carried on said casing and cooperating with said groove to limit the rotation of said valve member, the inlet and exhaust ports in said valve member being so disposed that the port operating as an inlet port is closed before the port operating as the discharge port is opened.
2. In a reversible pump, of a casing having a cylindrical bore with intake and exhaust ports communicating therewith, and a cylindrical valve member rotatable in said bore, said valve member having an eccentrically disposed piston chamber therein, a rotor piston carrying a sliding piston blade journaled for rotation in said piston chamber, the valve member having ports on opposite-sides thereof communicating vwith said chamber and opening into the aforementioned intake and exhaust ports in saidcasing in each of two positions to which` said valve may be rotated, the axis of rotation' of said piston being the same as the axis of rotation of said valve member, said valve member being provided on its periphery with 'v a groove, an inwardly extending lug carried on said casingl and cooperating with said groove to limit the rotation 0f said valve member, said ports in said valve member being so arranged that the port opening as the inletport is closed before the port operating as the discharge ort is opened.
3; In a reversible pump, the combination of a casing provided with a substantially cylindrical bore and intake and exhaust ports communicating with said bore, 'and a valve member snugly fitting and rotatably received in saidbore, said valve member being provided with an eccentrically arranged piston chamber'therein, a rotor piston carrying a slidable piston blade journaled for rotatlon in said chamber, the axis of rotation of said y,rotor being the same as the axis of rotation of said valve member, said valve member having ports communicating with the aforementioned intake and exhaust ports'in said casing, said valve member being provided on its periphery' with a groove, an inwardly extending lug carried on said` casing and cooperating with said groove to limit the rotation of said valve member, the ports in said valve and in said casing being in communication when said valve is rotated to its limit in either direction, the ports in the valve member being located at one side of the center line of the piston chamber in said valve whereby in the rotation of the piston in said the combination 'a groove,
lcylinder the intake port is closed before the exhaust port is opened and suicient friction is set up to cause a rotation of the valve member with therotor `in either directionl until limited by said sto means.
4. In a reversib e pump, .the combination of a casing provided with a chamber and in` take and exhaust ports communicating therea ,of ports in said valve member, said .valve member being provided on :its periphery with an inwardlyextending lug carried on said casing and cooperatingvwith said groove to limit the rotation of said valve member in each direction, said ports in the valve member communicating with the ports in said casing and with said cylinder when the valve member has been rotated-its limit in leither direction, said pair of ports being so arranged that upon rotationv of the piston in either direction, the port operating as the inlet port ,will be closed before the port operating as the outlet port is opened.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature.
