To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT 0.]3LA0KALL, of the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and use- 5 ful Improvements in the Means for Extinguishing Fires on Railway-Trains, of which the following is a full and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved mode of extinguishing fires that are liable to occur on railway-trains; and it consists in adapt ing and utilizing the feed-water injector of the locomotive to the purpose of forcing the water contained in the tank of the tender through any necessary length of hose, and
forcibly discharging the said water, directly into the flames in a steady and continuous stream, and thereby effect the extinguishment of the fire in a rapid and efiicacious manner.
The object of my invention is to provide prompt and efiioient facilities for the saving of lives and property imperiled by fires occurring on railway-trains.
In the accompanying drawings, which form partof this specification, and to which reference is herein made, Figure l is a side elevation, in skeleton .outline, of a locomotive-engine and part of its tender provided with my improvements; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 an enlarged and detached plan view of the arrangement of delivery and branch pipes and valves.
As illustrated in the drawings, A is the 10- comotive; B, the water-tank of the tender; 0, the feed-water injector; D, the induction-pipe 5 for theinjector; E, the delivery-pipe from the injector to the check-valve F on the boiler 0f the locomotive, and G the fire-hose attached to the branch of the delivery-pipe.
The locomotive A and water-tank B can be made of any style or size required or preferred.
The feed=water injector C may be made in the style shownin the drawings, or in any other style or kind thatis capable of forcing the feedwaterinto the boiler of a locomotive. The said 4 5 injector should be secured to some convenient part of thelocomotive or tender, and connected 'to the steam-space of the boiler by means of a steam-pipe, 0, provided with the usual steam stop-valve, 0'5
The induction-pipe D connects the injector G with the water-tank B in such manner that the said injector can readily obtain its supply of water from said tank.
The delivery-pipe E is connected to the discharge-opening of the injector, and extends from thence to the check-valve F on the boiler, and is connected thereto in the usual manner. At any convenient and accessible point between the injector O and check-valve F the delivery-pipe E should be provided with a lateral branchor outlet, E, having on its outer end a nipple, e, that is adapted to receive a coupling of the hose G. A stop cook or valve 0, is inserted in the branch pipe E in such manner as to close up the passage and prevent the flow ot' water therethrough, while the injector is only used for forcing the feed-water into the boiler, and a like cook or valve, 6 may be inserted in the delivery-pipe E at some point between the branch E and check-valve F, so as to prevent any water from passing into the boiler while the injector is being used for the extinguishment of fire or for throwing water outside of the boiler for any purpose.
The fire-hose G is of the class commonly used for that purpose, and each car in the train should be supplied with a sufficient quantity of such hose to reach over the length occupied by it (the car) in the train. Each length of said hose should be provided with suitable couplings, so that the several lengths can be connected together in a continuous line of sufficient length to reach a fire in the rear end of the train, and the line of hose should be furnished with the usual discharge-pipe and nozzle.
On the occurrence of a fire on or near the train the mode of operation is as follows: The train being brought to a stationary position, the hose G should be connected to the branch pipe E, and a sufficient number of lengths of the same should be coupled together to reach the fire. Then, after closing the stop-valvee and opening the stop-valve e, the injector 0 should be started in the usual manner, and
thereby a steady and continuous stream of water will be forcibly thrown into the fire t0 effect its extinguishment.
It will readily be seen that the supply of water may be derived from any other availabe source besides the tank of the tender, and my invention can be easily and quickly adapted to such a change by'simply connecting a suction hose or pipe to the induction-opening of the injector, and by this means my improvement can be rendered available in connection with any conveniently-located stream, cistern, or stationary water-tank.
When preferred the stop cock or valve 0 between the branch pipe E and check-valve F, may be dispensed with; but under such a condition of things a portion cf the water will be forced into the boiler, causing a diminution in the force and volume of the water discharged into the fire and endangering the flooding ofthe boiler. While the scope of my invention includes such a modification, I prefer to construct the appliance with means for closing the delivery-pipe before it reaches the point ofits connection with the check-valve, so that when it is required to use a portion of the water passing, through the injector for feeding the boiler while the balance is being used for extinguishing fire, the proportion of the volume of water so diverted for the purpose of feeding the boiler may be under the control of the engineer.
