This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in carding machines, and the principal object of the invention is to provide an adjustable mounting for the carding machine motor so that the usual belt drive between the motor and the machine may be easily and efficiently adjusted as to tension. I In particular, the invention concerns itself with the'provision of a specific motor mounting bracket which is particularly adapted for attachment to the carding machine frame, while an important feature of the invention resides in the provision of adjustable means for mounting a motor on the bracket.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient and dependable operation, and its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a carding machine, showing the invention in situ thereon;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1; and,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 33 in Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now the accompanying drawings in detail, the general reference character Ill designates a. conventional carding machine including a frame member l2 which has a convex upper surface l4 and an upstanding flange H5 at one side of said surface, the machine being driven by an electric motor l8 which is connected by a belt drive 20 to a drive element or pulley (not shown) supported by the frame member l2.
The invention resides in the provision of a mount for the motor Hi, this comprising an upwardly extending bracket 22 which has a base portion 24 provided with a concave under surface 26 to rest on the convex upper surface l4 of the frame member l2, to which the base member 24 is secured by a plurality of screws 28.
Moreover, an upstanding lug 30 is formed integrally with the base member or portion 24 and 2 abuts the flange 16, to which it is secured by a screw 32.
The bracket 22 is provided at its upper end with a horizontal platform 34 reinforced by suitable gussets 36 with which the bracket 22 is equipped, and the platform 34 carries a pair of apertured lugs 38 in which is positioned a transverse hinge pin 40.
The hinge pin 40 also extends through a pair of apertured lugs 42 provided at the underside of a plate 44 to which the motor I8 is rigidly secured by suitable screws 46.
The plate 44 is spaced upwardly by the hinge means 38, 40, 42 from the platform 34, and a pair of downwardly extending adjusting screws 48 are provided in the plate 44 and abut the upper surface of the platform 34 at points remote from the hinge pin 40, as best shown in Figure 3.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that by simply tightening or loosening the screws 48, the plate 44 together with the motor l8 thereon may be raised or lowered with respect to the platform 34, thus correspondingly tightening or loosening the tension of the belt drive 20.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point i deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a carding machine, the combination of a frame member having a convex upper surface and an upstanding flange at one side of said surface, an upwardly extending bracket having a concave base portion positioned on said convex upper surface and rigidly secured thereto, an upwardly extending lug provided integrally on said base portion and rigidly secured to said flange, a horizontal platform provided at the upper end of said bracket, a plate hinged at one edge thereof to said platform for upward and downward swinging movement, a motor mounted on said plate and having an endless belt drive to a drive element supported by said frame member, and means for adjusting said plate relative to said platform, whereby to vary the tension of said drive.
